[OT] Question for the Elmira/Corning/Finger Lakes folks
IKnowPhysics replied to Weave's topic in Archive
I lol'd. But seriously, dogs are Korean food, cats are Chinese food. -
Like I said, I won't/can't defend this stuff because there's no way for me to verify any of it. I don't think I've ever posted "insider" anything, but feel free to prove differently by quoting a post. I fully realize how Eklund that post sounded, but it's the middle of august.
-
Like I said, I'm not defending any of this. I've never posted "insider" anything before. This isn't a regular occurance. The source was a roommate of an nhl player with no other middlemen. He makes his living in hockey, but not at the nhl level, and is around nhl players often. Some of it I believe and some of it I don't. I tried to trim out as much of the speculative and opinionated fat as possible.
-
Warning: none of these are substantiated, but they come from a roommate of an NHL player. I won't defend them, but he insists that these bits are true: 1a) Shane Doan is the leader everyone thinks he is. Dave Tippet would do anything to keep him because he admits that without him, there's no way they would have made the playoffs. 1b) Doan called Tippet sometime in the past two weeks to inform him that he won't be returning to Phoenix. 1c) The Buffalo Sabres have offered Shane Doan a 10 year $60 million contract. It's believed that he doesn't want to play for Buffalo because he doesn't want to move his family there (where ever he goes is likely to be where he stays for a long time). 2) The reason Jeff Carter was traded was because he ###### Scott Hartnell's wife. Lockerroom atmosphere is everything to nhl players, so while carter was a better player than hartnell, carter was moved because he made the mistake (although many agree hartnell married the wrong woman) 3) Pittsburgh led in the money race for Ryan Suter much of the way, but Suter really wanted to play in the Midwest. Suter went to Minnesota because his wife's family is from there and because his family is 4 hours away in Madison.

Because U-Stream isn't very well labeled, here's the Paladino proposal: http://www.ustream.t...corded/24279433 Opinion: hate it. The stated goal of the Paladino proposal is to NOT build an attraction, but a "service" building for existing events. If there's a definition of more-of-the-same and not bringing in new money to the area, this building is it. It's like they understand the importance of the block as a keystone between the Canalside, Main Street, and the future of Perry Street, but they refuse to stop themselves from thinking small in its purpose. They think they're merely building, as they said, "when you boil it down, a large parking facility." Meanwhile, Cliff Benson's offering everything Paladino's offering, but he forgets the private luxury office space and apartments in favor of community-oriented purpose and a regional attraction. They come away as really believing they're building a gift for the city. Edit: LOL, and the first question out of the gate at Paladino is why aren't they building an attraction. His answer: too much congestion. WTF! You WANT congestion downtown! Build the attractions and then engineer the streets correctly, fool! Sabres should be a slam dunk.

No. This isn't kindergarten, I'm not holding your hand. Your major Business (sic) publication is an out-of-date blog that doesn't cite any sources. The videos are recent one+ hour presentations from the first hand parties giving detailed explanations of the concepts and methods in their plans in a necessary and official step in the city's proposal process. Couple those presentations with the slides linked earlier in the thread (those links work, by the way), and you get a pretty clear picture of what's going on. If you want to piss and moan about civics and government, take the time to inform yourself instead of waving around your incorrect ######. See you in 3 hours.

I warned you guys... Listen, and understand. That user is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are retarded.

I like the reuse plan for the sky way. Innovative, forward-looking. Transforming the top deck into park space is in line with Buffalo's great park heritage. But invariably, the quite-high volume of 43000 vehicles per day, 2800 of which are trucks, needs a suitable alternative- that's the heart of the challenge.

You and I are on precisely the same page, with one exception: the Ruff's System thread taught me not to engage him. Don't subsidize housing for rich people, subsidize something that people can use, something that draws lots of people. The increased crowds will bring the money. I wonder if the size of Pegula's investment is enough to raise the eyebrows and curiosities of other potential investors. It certainly sets a good example.
-
If that was the stated goal of the City's request-for-proposal, then this should be a slam dunk in the Sabres' favor. Apartments and office space for rich people on land earmarked for public use? No thanks, let's get the little kids on the ice for open skate.

So here's the breakdown: Sabres investment: $123 million Paladino investment: $64 million Sabres hotel rooms: 200 Paladio hotel rooms: 140 Sabres retail space: 15900 Paladino retail space: 8600+some in the hotel Sabres parking spaces: 965 Paladino parking spaces: 1089 Sabres others: Double ice rink on 7th floor (110,000 sqft) Fitness center (12,000 sqft) Paladino others: 110,000 square feet of office space 42 luxury apartments (1200-3000 sq ft each) Sabres timeline: Ice open Sepetember '14, Hotel open May '15. Paladino timeline: Open December '14. Opinion: Sabres win hands down. They're investing twice as much. Their ice rinks will create jobs and bring in tourism dollars. Their space is soo much more public-use oriented (more retail space, ice rink space, fitness center) than the other plan, which is really important in that location. It enhances the notion of hockey heaven by building a new regional destination and the services to support it. It looks like Pegula is building for the people (ice rinks, retail space) and Paladino is building for wealthy private use (office and luxury apartment space). I think it's more useful to the city to create something new and publicly accessible in that space, be it ice rinks or a different attraction, instead of constructing new office space or apartment space when there's plenty of other nearby buildings that can be renovated into great office space and apartment space (for cheaper!).

So Pegula takes him down to the Basilica on Sunday, and for communion you give him a contract and ink.

Dodge didn't make a Blue and Gold model that year. Remember what the Sabres logo was in 2009?

Love the Sabres' proposal. Total investment at 65% of what it cost to build FNC (in 2012 dollars). I think Paladino's facade choices match the neighborhood better, but they also feel less distinctive than the Sabres' proposal. And yes, as a recreational hockey player who's open to moving back to the Buffalo area, the prospect of a new double sheet downtown only makes me want move there more.

I'm starting to see Carolina's improved chance to get back into the mix for the SE division champ, which is a a little troublesome, because it's getting crowded at the Eastern Conference playoff bubble level. It'd be better if at least three out of the five SE teams just plain stunk in addition to the Leafs and Canadiens.

While the Rangers' scoring has improved, they've taken a hit in forward depth. They've got $13M to fill out their 2nd/3rd lines. Spending $7.5M+ for Doan may not be in their best interest, but no one's ever accused that franchise of being smart with their money.
-
Understandably, Rangers now have depth issues. When Taylor Pyatt's your sixth-highest paid forward, you start to look like the old one-line Tampa Bay Lightning. But the trade leaves cap space: Rangers have $13M to spend to flesh out their 2nd/3rd lines.
