I always liked what the Sabres did back in the day in keeping a veteran 7th defenseman who was at the tail end of his career. Numminen and Patrick come to mind. We're stuck playing Rochester guys if one of the top-6 goes down. That isn't ideal. Nelson and Guhle aren't ready.

You can tell Bylsma has green-lighted the defensemen. Risto and McCabe are making some nice plays in the offensive zone.

We would have had a better chance in this one had a few penalties been called. That said, the big mistakes early really cost the Sabres.
