  1. Three of my current colleagues married their former students, so I can say with certainty that this does happen!
  2. I like Gemologist. He knows this track well. Race about to start!!! I'll Have Another wins it! Wow - exciting finish!
  3. Saw Prong and Crowbar in a really small venue two weeks ago (great show). Saw Van Halen at Bridgestone Arena last week. And, as some of you pointed out above, it reminded me of why I don't like the giant arena shows. I was basically watching them on a television screen from afar, it was miserably hot in the arena, the band just kind of stood there and didn't really have much of a stage show or the sort of stage presence I remember them having years ago. And, I couldn't quite figure out what the heck David Lee Roth was talking about! Upcoming shows: I'll see my neighbor and fellow dog lover Emmylou Harris perform at Ryman Auditorium this month and will see the Dirty Dozen Brass Band in June.
  4. Am reading this thread wearing full zombie makeup... Just got back from the Nashville zombie prom! (http://promocalypse.com/)
  5. Housley, of course, played in an era where league scoring was up considerably versus today's game. The year Housley put up a career-high 97 points ('92-'93), he was tied for 23rd in league scoring. Karlsson's 72 points put him 7th in overall league scoring thus far, which IMHO is very impressive for a 21 year old d-man. Karlsson also plays over 25 minutes per game (10th best in the league) so it is not like he doesn't get shifts against the opposing team's top lines... he just doesn't regularly kill penalties. Ottawa uses Cowen and Kuba primarily for that role.
  6. Hard to believe that the majority would rather have Myers than a kid the same age (actually a little younger) who has 70 points and is a runaway Norris trophy winner at age 21. This kid Karlsson is 7th in the entire NHL in scoring and leads the next best scoring defenseman by a whopping 26 points. I understand the Myers "upside" argument, but the same can be said for Karlsson... he will get better as a positional defenseman.
  7. Maybe Joel Armia, who (according to Hockey's Future) is our top overall organizational prospect, makes Kassian more expendable. Joel has more offensive upside than Kassian. And, as others have pointed out, we can get the size elsewhere. But, no one can argue that we weren't badly in need of a young center who can score.
  8. We have Hodgson, Myers, and Ennis all as first rounders from that draft. All played together on Canada's World Junior team. Not bad.
  9. I think each team got the other's top forward prospect. Since the Canucks picked up Samuel Pahlsson earlier, they have their 4 playoff centers. Could be a move that works for both teams... everyone here will agree that we needed another scoring center and that is exactly what we got. I saw Sulzer play here in Nashville. He's a career 7th defenseman.
  10. We get another German player in Sulzer! We now lead the league in Germans.
  11. I have to think this move was about acquiring a much needed young Center and we had to give up someone of value to make that happen. I wonder if there is/was something behind the scenes with Kassian???
  12. ...'cus you just can't have enough 180 lb. centers on the roster! (Hodgson can score, so I give him that)
  13. Just saw that. for Cody Hodgson?
  14. I like the Sweet Home Alabama version better (being that I live in Tennessee and all)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL3-m8NBbIM
  15. My complaint (not a knock on the above posts) is people who throw up their hands and say they can't do something when if they when to Google, typed in what they were looking for, spent five minutes reading throught one of the 1000 websites that would teach them how to do it, it'd be done. Why do I have to do this for them? Also, I'm sick of Tennessee drivers. They absolutely REFUSE to use turn signals. Is it too much effort to let the other drivers know why you appear to be randomly stopped in the left lane of a busy road?
  16. I'm eating a giant bowl of oatmeal right now. :)
  17. Stuck in my head today... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm72DPJCX58&ob=av2e (down, oh down... like the Sabres in the standings)
  18. I like Nick Foles (http://nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=78428&draftyear=2012&genpos=QB). He didn't get much hype since he played on a terrible team, but I could see him climbing up into the 1st round as the next QB after Luck/RG3.
  19. The bad news is Ryan Pickspatrick is up to an NFL leading 22 interceptions thrown on the year... ...the good news is he is still well below the NFL record of 42 picks in one season (George Blanda, 1962)!
  20. I used to live about a mile from the Avery brewery in Boulder (became a total beer snob living in Colorado & Oregon, but I digress...). Used to go over there all the time for samples. The brewery is amazingly small and low-tech. Their labeling machine is about the size of my desk! Boulder Beer Company (Hazed & Infused, Never Summer Ale, etc.) is a bit bigger but still smaller than you'd expect. Damn, you guys are making me thirsty!
  21. Not a genre that most people like, but I think Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy brings it (although I normally have a strong preference for male singers when it comes to heavy music).
  22. Merry Christmas! ...watching Slapshot on Retroplex and drinking mimosas... life is good!
  23. Are/were you a Marching Virginian?
  24. Happy Festivus everyone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS7-jcsB_WQ
  25. Had many good friends who went to Radford (I went to Virginia Tech right up the road from there). New River Valley is a great place to live. Good weather, affordable, nice people... again, good luck!
