The city of Glendale's bond rating was downgraded largely because of subsidies to the NHL. The team's losses are around $300 million just since 2001, and the team was losing $20 million+ per year prior to that. The city can't afford to keep the team there and no owner can make it work with or without massive subsidies (the team has never been remotely close to profitable since moving there). It isn't a matter of waiting for demand to come around any more. To buy the team is to acquire an enormous amount of debt and an incredible financial risk. Personally, I find it hard to believe that potential suitors are lining as Bettman claims. That said, IMHO you are absolutely right about the reason for Bettman's southern strategy. He needs the South to be able to score a lucrative TV contract. In one of the courses I teach, we do a case on NHL franchise economics where we walk through the financial pros and cons of various markets. National TV contracts are potential game-changers for sports leagues like the NHL.

It is shocking how few fans actually attend games in Glendale (huge discrepancy between paid and actual attendance). So the team loses on parking, concessions, merchandise sales, etc. Even with Glendale offering 8-figure annual subsidies to keep the team in AZ, they're still projected to lose millions year-over-year. Why anyone would want to buy that team and keep it in AZ is mind-boggling.

Good point. Plus, Myers was NHL rookie of the year straight out of juniors, yet has regressed.

We are and have been a bad team for the past several years. Is it only the system and/or Lindy? Or might it be reasonable to assume that some of us overrate some of the players we have?

Lindy Ruff has been coach of this team since 1997. He's had almost 16 years. I bet we have people on this forum who can't remember any coach of this team other than Lindy. I'm all for patience, but...

He is in Lindy's doghouse for his defensive play. The irony is he is being benched in favor of a guy who can't score... ever... (Ellis) and we're down a goal. What sense does that make, Lindy? Bench your offensive guys when you're down a goal? Is the goal to lose by no more than one?
