I'm really enjoying the Hockey Night in Canada intermission coverage (watching the Canadian feed). They correctly pointed out that there is a whole lot of quit in this Sabres team.

Half-assed defensive efforts on both those goals, IMHO. Even though that first one was a 3-on-1, CoHo sure didn't make much of an effort to tie up Gionta. That second goal was miserable on multiple fronts.

The DV is measured at the individual level and not the team level, so this study is only tangentially related to what folks on this board want to know (i.e. does booing hurt team performance). They simply picked three sports and found performance-related effects in two of three. As with all research, this is merely one piece of evidence and not meant to be "conclusive." It does suggest that audience feedback can matter for individual performance is some sports domains... but IMHO the more general notion that feedback affects performance is already well established in the literature. I agree that there isn't much work in the sports-related area. As a general point, be careful with the assumption that "peer reviewed" = "reputable." There is considerable variance in journal quality.
