Nothing like ignoring the fact that half of the rest of the team went down with injuries or illness right around the same time. Myers, Gorges, Risto, Gionta, Mitchell, CodyMac, Foligno, Moulson, etc. have all missed time over the past month or so. It wasn't just one guy (Myers) missing from the lineup.

That's why the move is a little strange... normally a coach wouldn't be fired with the team sitting in a playoff position.

Gotta DVR this one. Going to the Preds - Hurricanes game tonight.

When in doubt, blame the coach.

Is there anyone we're NOT interviewing? I'm all for casting a wide net, but I must have read over a dozen names that are supposedly in consideration.

Nashville's defense is the best 1 through 7 in the league IMHO and a big reason the team is at/near the top of the NHL standings. With the exception of Volchenkov (who is the 6th/7th d-man) every one of the Preds d-men can skate, pass, and shoot. Those guys make the offensive transition game work. I think the league is moving to 5 interchangeable parts on the ice where defensemen can score and forwards can defend. This is the Sabres challenge as I see it. We need more skilled guys in the back. Risto and Zadorov are a good start in that regard, but I like the idea of taking a puck moving d-man in the draft if we don't get one of the first two picks.

I like Shanahan since a new owner might want some experience at the head coaching position. Discount everything Shanny did in Washington. Jesus H. Christ couldn't win in that place with Dan Snyder meddling in every decision (RGIII in particular). I have a theory that winning in the NFL is more about the players (which falls on the GM) and the coordinators than about the head man, with the exception of cases where the head coach calls plays (either offensive or defensive). Just a theory...

This is what I've though all along. It is a classic contrast effect. Our other defensemen are so bad that Myers looks like a superstar in comparison. I personally don't see Myers as a top-pair defenseman on most of the better teams in the league. I like Myers' defensive game, but not his offensive/passing game. I see no reason why our top pair won't be Risto and Zadorov in the future. They're young now so they're making a lot of mistakes, but the talent is clearly there.

Think they'd pick up that flag in Buffalo? :wacko:

I don't necessarily want a smallish winger (Tatar) for Myers, even if he can really score. If there was some other guys in the mix, then maybe. The Ryan O'Reilly rumor is still kicking around. That sounds much more appealing to me. We have the cap space to give O'Reilly the kind of deal he is looking for. And, he is a center which is our biggest position of need, of course.

Ducks and Predators play tonight out in Anaheim. I'm looking forward to this one. They're sitting #1 and #2 in the Western Conference right now.

Myers is by far our best penalty killer. Risto and Zadorov have been pretty pedestrian defensively over the past couple of weeks. I give them a pass since they're both rookies and learning on the fly. I don't mind Gorges, but he's not a top pair defenseman. Weber continues to be Weber. And, The Mess continues to be a mess.
