GDT: Buffalo at Nashville. 3/21/2015 8:00 MSG

Pekka is always in net unless he in injured or there is a back-to-back. The Preds need this one so they will be motivated. I'm wearing my new Zadorov jersey to the game tonight. I was on the fence about wearing Preds gear vs. Sabres gear (I have Preds playoff tickets, so I want them to win out down the stretch). But, pre- and post-game it is better to wear Sabres stuff since there will be a ton of Buffalonians at the game and around town, especially for a weekend game. The Preds draft exceedingly well in the middle and late rounds. This forum seems to ignore anything other than high first-round picks. But, you can build a very good team if you "hit" on some of those later picks. Shea Weber, Mattias Ekholm, Roman Josi, Pekka Rinne, Craig Smith, Taylor Beck, Gabriel Bourque, Cody Franson, etc. are all very good players drafted 2nd round or later. Our goalie Lindback was a 7th round Preds draft pick (as was former 30-goal scorer Patric Hornqvist).- 179 replies

Gnash puts Sabretooth to shame. The Preds use him for all sorts of in-game marketing. That's not a coincidence since the guy inside the costume's day job is in the Preds Marketing Department. Anyone reading this going to the game tonight?- 179 replies

My Dad taught at UB for 27 years, so I guess I can root for them. They paid for my toys when I was kid. -

Every GDT thread these days degrades into the same drivel where some folks feel the need to tell everyone else which team they need to root for and why. In an abstract sense, every thread has turned into a politics thread.

Larsson has shown he is an NHL player. No doubt about it. -

If Meszaros doesn't play, which defenseman is going to step up and take multiple penalties? -
Athletes at the top programs are paid. It happens in both basketball and football, and is far more common than most folks realize. There is a system of shadow boosters that has been in place for decades at many (though not all) power conference schools... and yes, the SEC is the king in this regard. Not sure about non-revenue sports, but for football and basketball there is a reason certain schools e.g., Alabama and Kentucky, are perennial powers who recruits the 5* kids year after year. And, it isn't that every kid just wants to live in Tuscaloosa or Lexington for 4 years of their life.

Never root against BJs.... I mean, unless you're not into that sort of thing. ;) Preds - Kings last night was like a playoff game. Two heavyweights going at it. Very physical game. Preds - Ducks is about to start. Top two teams in the West going at it. Preds need this one with St. Louis right on their heels in the Central.

As per usual, I don't know what the hell is going on.

This is a complete misuse of the research on self-control and delayed gratification. Draft choices in sports are akin to gambles on futures, not risk-free certain outcomes. A better place to draw analogies is from the research on judgment and decision making given uncertainty (e.g., journals like the Journal of Risk and Uncertainty). Winning now does not preclude a desirable future outcome just as losing now does not necessarily suggest future success. IMHO, losing on purpose is like trying to improve your hand in a game of poker. At this point, most have developed the unwavering notion that the two most valuable players in this draft when all is said and done will be the top 2 picks. Unequivocally. I look at what as happened on this board as a fantastic example of focus-induced tunnel vision (and herding behavior), which is a phenomenon I know quite a lot about... folks have convinced themselves that there is one and only one "proper" course of action... There is a stream of research across several fields (mostly Economics) on drafting in sports and more than one paper that attempts to correlate NHL drafting with future success. To summarize the studies I'm aware of, the strongest indicator of future success is "hitting" on mid-round and late-round picks. The basic logic is it takes all 20 players to be successful and strong mid-/late-round returns make the difference.

Notre Dame winning the ACC is a huge deal down on Tobacco Road. They won't like that at all, especially being a new entrant to the conference.

I watched, but didn't feel like posting. What's the point. That was a shockingly boring game. Like watching paint dry.
