It's just not qbs that struggle because they get drafted into bad situations. Poorly managed organizations create hurdles for players in all the positions. Look how bad the Bills were prior the McDermott/Beane era? There is no question that a highly rated qb prospect is going to have more challenges on a bad team than a more talented team. But there are still ways to smartly manage that situation. For one, don't play the young qb right away. And if you are going to play him as soon as possible it is better to provide him with an adequate OL and good coaching support to help the qb have a better chance to succeed.

I can't answer your question about sites that grade the draft experts. I just don't know. However, prior to the draft I heard on a couple of shows the claim that maybe 40% or less of the first round drafted qbs work out. It's a tough and humbling job to evaluate players at all positions, but especially for the qb position it is much tougher task.

How many jobs has Torts had? It seems that there are coaches suited for different stages of development. Some coaches excel working with a young roster while other coaches are more comfortable working with a veteran lineup. There are old school coaches who are less flexible and insist on taking a "my way or the highway" approach. In the cap era with contract considerations that can be a recipe for internal conflict. There is no question that Don Granato falls in the spectrum specializing working with young players. The challenge for him is that now that his roster is close to being filled, how will his approach work? Anyone who listens to him talk about the game and his roster knows that he is very adaptable to individual players and changing circumstances. We are now at the point where it is all about your record. Expectations are now up; now it is all about the record.

Florida should be happy with that trade. But so should we. It took some time to appreciate the return (Tage) for ROR. If Levi becomes the goalie that we hope he becomes, the Reinhart deal might turn out to be the most consequential deal from dispatching the old core. And that includes the Eichel deal. And from all reports Kulich is a top tier prospect who should be ready in a year or two, if not sooner. Good for them and good for us.

What that article shows is that there are a number of options to consider. Even if we can't get a #4 defender, there are a number of 4/5 defenders that would strengthen that unit. And those tweener type of defenders can be secured for a reasonable price.

No draft analyst is going to be always right on the challenge of projecting how a college player will do well in the pros. The Clausen draft was 13 years ago. He was stunningly wrong on that pick. On the Josh Allen pick he was stunningly right while many analysts thought that Allen was simply too inaccurate of a passer to succeed in the NFL. Will he be right in his assessment of Levis? I have no clue.

One draft analyst who had Josh Allen rated as his top qb was Mel Kiper. He stuck by Allen throughout much of the ranking process. Mel K also was one of the draft analysts who rated Wil Levis very highly. It will be interesting to see how his pro career turns out.

Attached is a link from the Buffalo News listing some of the defensemen who might be available in trades and from free agency. Many of the players will be available because of their respective team's cap pressures. Boston and Vegas might have players on the move because of their tight cap situation. What's apparent is that the Sabres have a number of options to pursue this offseason. If Levi wasn't on our team, I would be receptive to signing Hellebuyck and paying a premium price for him. That isn't the case. This is just my opinion but I think our GM is projecting Levi to be our long-term #1 goalie. I just don't see him giving up significant assets for this top tier goalie.

It's probable that if Winnipeg were going to trade Hellebuyck, they would want a prime prospect, such as Savoie or Kulich, included in a deal. If that were the case, I would say don't make the deal. There is no question that if Hellebuyck was added to our roster, it would make this team a factor in the league. And if he were to be acquired, it would be a mistake to bring him on unless an extension was agreed to. My sense is that based on how our GM values his premier prospects, he would not make such a deal.

A Risto type of player for the third or fourth pairing is a player I would consider bringing in.

So what? He criticized the organization for trading a teammate. What's the problem with that and what's so unusual about that? He expressed an opinion about a teammate who was dealt. I'm not arguing for acquiring this particular player. What I am saying is that players on teams have relationships, some are very close. So a player expressing his displeasure in some form shouldn't be an issue. The issue for any targeted player in a trade or from the free agent market is whether he wants to be here or not.

You are missing the point regarding my references to the failed Chyrun effort. It's not so much about pursuing a particular player as it is a recognition by the GM that he needed to upgrade the unit. I would love to add a more physical #4 defender to pair with Power. A player such as the Ranger's K'Andre Miller would fit the bill. However, I'm not sure that caliber would be available, at least at a price our GM would want to pay. But getting a tougher defender or two for the third or lower pairing might be more attainable. We're simply riding on two different buses when it comes to Joki. That' okay.

I see it a little differently. As indicated by the Chyrun pursuit, the GM understands that he needs to add a player or two to the blueline from the outside. KA said on WGR that Arizona wanted either Savoie or Kulich in the trade deal. He said no. My point is that there is a recognition that he wants to bring in players from the outside to bulk up the unit. In his extended WGR interview, he noted the damaging effect to the unit when Samuelsson was hurt. The GM and coach have gone out of their way to point out Joki's upside. I don't understand why you are so determined to undercut him. He's a player they are counting on. Leave him alone. Focus on adding players and not subtracting them.😄

Thanks for the clip. I don't understand Ryan Johnson's stance. It just seems to me that from a variety of standpoints Buffalo would be a good situation for him. There is a positional need, a dearth of talent in the system and joining a team that is on the rise.

As you describe, there are a number of options. And even when the lines are technically set, there is still an ability to juggle the lines within the games in order to change the dynamic when it is called for. T his roster flexibility also allows the coach options to move up and down the lines and pairings when injuries occur. Mitts filling in at center on the top line demonstrated that point. Don G has proven adept at assembling lines that fit. We have the right coach to fit the pieces together that best serves this team. Coaching matters! The GM has often talked about reaching the point of having internal competition for roster spots and roles. As I see it, the talent base has increased to the point where that reality is coming in to play.

I can't answer the money issue for sure. But it certainly would expand the viewer market into southern Ontario, increasing the advertising money and also expanding the ticket buying market. Becoming a more regional team because of the increased exposure would in the long run financially benefit the organization.

The GM laughed about it when he stated how strenuously DG argued to acquire Greenway. The coach was also a voice on behalf of bringing in Stillman. He was familiar with both players before they entered the pro ranks. I'm counting on Greenway surprising a lot of people next year because he should be very motivated and fully healthy. He was plagued by injuries last year where much of his offseason was dedicated to rehabbing instead of working out and preparing for the season.

You correctly stated what I believe the organization is going to do with respect to the goalie situation. In fact, based on how Levi looked in his stint, I'm even more convinced about this issue. Is it a risky? Yes. My center of attention in this offseason is watching to see how the GM will address the blueline unit. Is he going to bring in a #4 defenseman to pair with Power? And if he does, will he still add another player to the unit? The minimum amount of action I want to see is adding two 4/5 caliber of blueliners. As the GM stated on WGR, the loss of Samuelsson reverberated throughout the unit because it was thin to begin with. As you well know, I'm more comfortable than most having Joki paired with Power. If a better player is brought in to work alongside Power, then that would be fine with me. The imperative for me is to add at least two 4/5 caliber of players in order to strengthen the lower pairings and create enough quality depth to be able to absorb injuries when they inevitably happen.

Beniers will probably win the rookie award. Even if the Kraken player won the award and we were given the opportunity to redo the draft, I would still take Power over Beniers. Power was the right pick for us as Beniers was the right pick for Seattle. Power is already an anchor player for us. Just think how much better he will get!

Jack Eichel ended up in a good situation for himself. He could end up on team representing the West in a Cup Final. The other part of the deal is the return we got for him. Alex Tuch is a thriving player on one of the better first lines in the league. Krebs is a young player who simplified his game and demonstrated that he has more upside and definitely has a role on this team. The acquisition of Greenway was made with a second-round acquired in the Eichel traded. In addition, a first-round pick gained from that deal resulted in getting a high-end prospect. There is no question that the return on this trade propelled the improvement of this team. Both teams in this trade got what they wanted. It was a win/win deal for each of the trading participants. Assuming Greenway reclaims his game, the intriguing issue becomes on what line and players does he work with? I can see him on a line with Mitts and ??? to form a 2B line.

After listening to the WGR interview my takeaway is that for the most part the organization is going to stay the course. There is an expectation that internal growth of the younger players on the roster is going to undergird this team's improvement. The same mind-set of development is going to be applied to players in the system. The three young players that he mentioned were Savoie, Kulich and Rosen. Will there be some changes on the roster? He didn't speak to it specifically but most likely there will be some additions to the blue line. He was asked about the goalie situation. He's not too keen on having three goalies on the roster at the same time. I've listened to KA on a number of occasions. His management style can be described as a collaborator who seeks as much input as possible. He wants everyone, from the top to bottom, on the same page. He's the antithesis of the old-school autocratic executive. He's a modern manager who believes in inclusivity and the process.
