I think it's a failure because Mitts is a very good player and Byram is anything but. In fact Byram statistically is right now among the worst players in the entire league at his position (which is why Colorado was over the moon to find a sucker like Adams to unload him on). We essentially gave away a valuable asset for useless junk.

At best he's nothing to write home about and was/is a horrible fit for this roster. The fact we stupidly blew a giant hole in our roster to get him is the icing on the cake.

If we had Mitts back and replaced Byram with freaking Mike Card we'd still be in way better shape than we are now. Worst second line in the entire league is absolutely killing us.

Detroit got incredibly lucky converting on their few opportunities while the Devils missed on lots of opportunities that should've ended up in the back of the net. The turning point was in the third with a horrific non-call on an obvious (and very filthy) board that caused the Devils to completely lose their cool and composure.

Good thing Kevyn didn't do something mind bogglingly stupid like trade a top 6 center we spent years developing for a redundant defenseman who adds nothing to the roster leaving us with a #2 center who couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. That would be really bad.
