How close to the playoffs will the Sabres get this year?
Pimlach replied to Alaska John's topic in The Aud Club
KA put his faith in the group? Adams should have put some better players into the group from the start. He should have never let the goaltending situation get so bad after he failed to retain Ullmark. He is dam lucky that UPL emerged by mid December or this team is bottom 5. He should have had a ready to play NHL roster that was breathing fire to start the season. Instead he looked at AHL players and conducted a 3 month long goalie tryout to start the season. Adams is the boss. He is most accountable for another lost season with no playoffs. -
RFA, Ukko Pekka Luukkonen - what would you sign him for?

Underachieving? When you look at Power's stats, fancy stats or regular, you just don't see underachieving. I guess it depends on the bar that is set for him. When I watch him I see mostly solid play, he can get into trouble at times, and he avoids contact like the plague. The contact part of it is what bothers most people here, he definitely will not reach elite status unless he starts using his body more - just us your body to block some people put, clear the front of net, and shield/protect the puck with your body and reach. This is essential for a defenseman. Little Clifton does it, Power can do it. For a 21 year old playing top four minutes he has been pretty good. For an $8M/yr guy (next year) playing top 4 minutes that is the rub. The blame for that is not Power, its Adams. Hopefully Power hits the gym hard and gets stronger in the upper body. Add lower body work to help with speed. He could really use some footwork help too. Finally, someone teach him how to hockey fight, meaning how to get leverage, how to hold on, and how to use his size and reach to his advantage. He is no fighter, but knowing this will come in handy because someday someone is going to take him on whether he wants to dance or not, it happens. He has a lot to work on but there is a ton of ability here too. -
I would not be upset if we packaged a player, a prospect, and a pick for him. Just a matter of which player and which prospect.

The speed and skills of Mahovlich and the size and power of Stemkowski.

It would be an amazing story if they win out and somehow get in Wonder if they would sell out in for the playoffs and keep the visitors out of their crib? I can’t believe I typed that last sentence. -

I think UPL is playing to his expectations. He was at one time a top goalie in the OHL. He had the double hip surgery. Goalies take time is the old adage. What confused me most about UPL is why he never dominated in the AHL. UPL got NHL games before he was ready because Adams had Tokarski and Dell as our goalies when Linus left, not because he was lighting it up in the AHL. Levi is intriguing by his athletic ability, his technique is still a work in progress, but he is playing great in the AHL. UPL is big. Big with great positioning is a good start. They could be a fantastic combination some day.
