It was the trade deadline day.  Miller and Ott were traded to St Louis a few days prior, I think.

I understand this, but a game against those dastardly Flyers is never 'just one game'.  Ever!!

Matt Moulson deal, Halak to WASH, and McNabb to the Kings.  Murray lost 2 of 3 that day.   One of his better days ?.

I owe you a sincere apology.  I had been a Sabres fan from their inception until I moved to St. Louis in 1992.  I transitioned to becoming a Blues fan shortly after. The Sabres were never on TV, and hockey is such an emotional sport that it didn't take long to make the move. (This doesn't apply to football...I have always been and will always be a Bills fan.)
A week or so ago I decided to start paying closer attention to the Sabres. The Blues are eating it right now, and the Sabres had won 10 straight games! I thought it might be time to get the NHL package and start watching the Sabres. I realized that I could listen to that evening's Sabres game on Sirius radio. I went out to the car and tuned in. The Sabres were winning 5-4 in the game against Tampa. I came in and told my wife I was going to listen to the Sabres. By the time I returned to the car, they were tied, and eventually lost the game. They have not won a game since I decided to become a follower.
I have to shoulder the blame for this most recent downslide. I'm very sorry, Sabres fans.

I always root for the Sabres.  I was throwing crap all over the room when Edmonton won that draft lottery.  But Eichel looks pretty special.  And I hope that Sobotka, Berglund and Thompson work out well.  I'm going to root for the Sabres as hard as I can.

You need to get yourself a Sonos my man.   Listening to XM in your car is so 2006.   Stream XM, WGR55 and all Apple Music in the convenience of your home.

think Samson could eventually move back to Center or is that experiment over?

I think there is one more chance for Sam to slide back to Center.   Phil is growing weary of Casey and his bad play.   He basically called him out on WGR when asked why he did not see any OT minutes.   And he was being polite, as his last four games against high caliber teams has resulted in horrible play.  Sheary and Tage need someone to distribute the puck, and Sam is second only to Jack in that department.   Compare our second line center to that of Toronto, Boston, Tampa, Washington or NYI and we have second class citizen status.   If there is a late December call up at wing, maybe Nylander gets a chance on the right of Jack and does well, I can see Sam taking on this role again.

Jack got 10 from the Sabres and Austin thinks he is better than Jack.  That and Toronto being Toronto, the Leaves will sign him for 10.5, or probably 11.

Does he think, or the rest of the league including the Leafs front office believe that?   Eleven has set the number at $12M and I believe that will be the starting point.

I'd probably try and buy (very) low on Pearson. Maybe.

Define low.  Move prospects, players or draft picks?   What line do you play him on?  Who do you move to free cap space?  Zemgus to free up a LW slot and cap space?   He has two more years after this one.  So longer than Sheary and Sobotka but less than Bergland.  And almost same Salary.

  6. I would entertain Seabrook.   Would be nice to have an experienced RD to play alongside Dahlin over the next few years.  His contract is onerous (6.7m AAV for 5 more years).  We add McCabe and they had to take Okposo’s anchor of a deal.  Seabrook would not need PP minutes and Risto playing reduced minutes on a second pairing might improve his game.

I would be floored if we won tonight

Seriously?  The Rangers are not a good team.   This is a great test for the Sabres.   Second night of a back to back against a team they should beat.  I’m interested to see if the secondary scoring shows up tonight or if yesterday was an aberration.

and yes Hutton is the starting goaltender on this team.  Not up for debate.  Yet.

Based on early returns who stays and who goes?

    UFA’s

    1) Skinner - our leading scorer and looks good with Jack - Odds of being re-signed - 90%

    2) Pominville - right now looks good on Jack’s other wing.  Calm leadership a plus.  Odds of being re-signed - 50%

    RFAs

    3) Ullmark - At worst is a solid backup and should be cheap to retain - re-sign 95%

    4)  Girgensons - with Larry and Berglund they are forming an excellent shutdown 4th line that is creating chances.  I would have said gone at the season’s start, but maybe earning a new deal. Wilson and Erod’s future could factor in here.  Odds right now 65%

    5) Larsson - See Girgensons, but with slightly lower odds since not as fast or physical. 55%

     6) Erod - I think we are better with him on the ice.  Not sure what Jbot thinks, but will be kept cheap.  re-sign odds 85%, but could lose out to a younger player.

     7) Elie - likely will be sent packing once Wilson gets healthy - re-sign odds 10%

8.) McCabe - seems to be earning a long-term role here.  Liked by PH, fits the system, can play up or down and now adding some offense - Odds 95%

    9) Baloo - 0%

    2020 UFAs

    10) Sheary - I think he’ll be traded this coming off-season to make room for Nylander.  Isn’t producing without Jack.  Re-sign odds 30%

    11) Sobotka - Tough call right now, but I expect Asplund to take his job by the end of 2020.  Re-sign odds 10%

    12) Bogo - Mr. Glass has helped the Sabres since his return, but needs to stay health and contribute to earn another deal.  I doubt he gets re-signed.  Odds 25%

    13) Scandella - I think he gets traded this off-season to make room for Pilut and/or Guhle.  I like him and his game, but to many kids pushing from the below and McCabe’s development helps make him a good trade asset.  Re-sign odds 25%

    14) Nelson - cheap, good skating and reasonably effective RHD are hard to find.  Expect another 2 year deal.  Re-sign odds 75%.

    15) Wilson - Likely get to compete for a role in 2019-20,  but doubt he stays beyond that. Re-sign odds 5%

    16) Hunwick - I’d be surprised if he ever suits up fo us other then in a dire emergency.  Doubt we can trade him.  May have to buy him out or send him down.  Re-sign odds ZERO.

Pommers is going to be 36 very shortly.  He struggled immensely last year in the spring.   You don’t somehow get better with age, unless your trainer works at BALCO.  Cap space allows the GM a top six forward from outside.  Plus opportunities for Nylander, CJ or Olofsson.  Not enough room at the Inn.  Less than 10%

Berglund and Sobotka are under contract for 3 and 1 more respectively.  Makes Larsson and Griggs expendable.   Less than 20% each.

Like your thought on Scandella.  I think he or McCabe are moved in offseason.

Dont sleep on Bogo.   I agree on the percentage, but money is a great motivating factor.  If he continues his leadship role I can see them keeping him with Pilut or Guhle to mentor.  Maybe a two year with a small haircut to 4.5 m AAV.

  9. 0-10 last two games on PP and have given up 4 short handed.  Something has to change here immediately.  Pair Skinner with someone else too.  Maybe E-Rod.  He is not getting  the puck in space.  Kings are playing like Shite, so they better start fast Saturday.  Hate that Kane got the better of us tonight.  He won his individual battles and then the war.

Socal pizza sucks.   I'm jealous, I certainly miss Buffalo pizza.   Always make it a point to visit Bocce and Bar Bill (for wings) when I'm there.   Along with Jim's Steakout, Mighty Taco, Chef's and Tim Horton's are the usual stops.     Although I've lost my affinity for Mighty Taco due to Del Taco just having higher quality ingredients.     Santora's in Mission Viejo I believe was started by the same Santora's in Buffalo.    The wings are flavorful, but small... and the pizza is just meh.

Planning on trying Elmo's, Imperial, Carbone's, John's Pizza & Subs, next trip.

SoCal pizza is terrible.  Try Rubino’s on Oso Pkwy in Mission Viejo.  At least they use quality ingredients and the sauce is sweeter than most.

The problem with any "national"  coverage is that they all have Monday Night Football syndrome, by which I mean they try to make the game and many players in it more important than they are ("perhaps the BEST GOALIE TO EVER PLAY THE GAME!"  And then next week's goalie will be the best, etc., ad nauseum.)  Also, they try too hard to sell the game to non-hockey fans, which leads to the Doc Emerick and others talking about players' hometowns and other such trivia that has NOTHING to do with the play of the game while there's an actual game being played.  Seriously, if I can't get the Sabres feed I usually just turn the sound down and save my sanity.

Don’t you think the production team has something to do with that?   After all you are playing to your audience which might not have seen a Sabres game at the time.   Perhaps talk about players hometowns is better than banal jokes about Rob Rays lack of scoring, fighting prowess or overall Intelligence, etc.   And far as not listening to another teams broadcast well that’s the equivalent to just watching MSNBC or FoxNews and not seeking an alternative view.  As for me bubble-boy, I choose to hear what other experts have to say about my team and challenge what is said by  MSG and the Sabres.  I believe the broadcast team has an obligation to spend the time researching the opponents and provide us the viewing public evidence of such.   And I hate to tell you, but the current team is not living up to their end of the bargain.   And you can knock Doc and the National guys all you want but if any local teams had the opportunity to assume one of those jobs they would take them in a heartbeat.  Now get ready to turn down the volume on tomorrow’s Bills/Browns game so you can listen to Murph and Kelsey, the A-team!!!

This doesn't bother me at all.  I hate listening to national sports crews murder a Sabres broadcast.  Fewer times would be better.

Agree to disagree.   As far as color commentators go, Eddie Olczyk, Pierre McGuire, Keith Jones, Ray Ferraro, & Mike Johnson are all superior to Rob.  And while this might sound blasphemous,  all the current National Broadcasters in Canada, and US are better than Rick.  Not Rick in his prime, but Rick today.   And Doc Emerick IS the Gold Standard for Play by Play.  Of course you love Ricks voice and excitement he brings when the Sabres score (which is all too infrequent these days), but the lack of effort on this team really shows when you compare to even that of other local broadcast teams, let alone the National team.   I listen to the opposition broadcast about 50% of the time on Centre Ice.   You can tell they have each watched the last 2-3 Sabres games in preparation and have insight on their recent play.   I HATE the Bruins, but Brickley and Edwards know their shite.  And not just bullet points they received from the Sabres PR staff.   Lorenz is my Avatar because I appreciated his game on the ice, but equally for his efforts as a color commentator.   His observations about game  were incredibly more perceptive than Ray's.   His presence is missed in the booth.

Can’t buy him out anyway.  That period ended on June 30th.   Since we didn’t have anyone in arbitration, we aren’t eligible to do an out of period buyout to get cap complaint.  In addition, I don’t think injured players are eligible for buyouts.  Unless Bogo had passed a physical before June 30th I doubt he was eligible for a buyout this season.

LGR4GM and I are talking about June 15th 2019.  Not this year.

  15. 54 minutes ago, LGR4GM said:

I think those are good points. 1 thing, they aren't buying out Bogo. If they didn't do it next year, I can't Botterill doing it next. Why extend a players cap hit an extra year? Sure it is less but even still why not just eat it for 1 more year and be done?

Two reasons why 2019/2020 make more sense.  First is actual cash payout.  Unlike the Sabres where Uncle Terry shells out all the cash up front, other teams back load their contracts.  Bogo stands to make $6M next year.  the 2/3's rule saves Pegula $2M.   If he is injured  again this year (and I'm banking on a healthy semi-successful season), and you have development from others that make him expendable, why not?    Second is the cap relief realized in 2019.   Four Million dollars in immediate  cap savings that can be used for a FA or  higher salaried D-man via trade to replace his second pairing.   The downside is only a $2M hit in 2020.  This is insignificant when you look at the UFA's coming off the books that year.  Sheary, Hunwick, Scandella, Sobotka and Wilson for approx. $14M.

If that's how it turns out, I'm not happy with a single one of those players where they are slotted.

    Avatar bet?

I don't want Nelson penciled in as a regular, but teams can get by with a weak 3rd pair. Bogosian is a huge problem because, even healthy, he's not a top-4 on a good team. Enjoy the bottom of the standings? Then yea, sure, Bogo playing real minutes is fine.

****News Flash****  The Sabres are not a good team.   Nor will they be very good next year either.  Probably a bottom 10 team.  My commentary on Bogo is like many, disappointed at the multiple injuries and lack of play for Buffalo since his arrival.   But I agree with "11", he is adequate for the second pair on the right.   Let's look at the Vegas Golden Knights.   They had Deryk Englelland on their second line right side. One might even say they are a "good" team.   Bogo when healthy is better in skating, foot speed and equal in strength.  Its amazing how a pairing with young and superior player like Shea Theodore can mask his weakness.   To a lesser extent, Brayden McNabb (whom we all know was given away by Tiny Tim along with 2 second's for Hudson Failure Fasching), also plays this role on the first pairing with a young and fast skater Nate Schmidt.   So is it implausible to think that if paired with Rasmus, Bogo could not excel?    And if he is injured again, or does not, then he will be a perfect candidate for a buyout NEXT YEAR (not this).   Where the length of the buyout does not impact us when we are a playoff ready team.

Boesser put up 29 goals and 26 A’s in 62 games in his 20 year old season. This will be Casey’s 20 year old season (3 months older than Boeser) and I seriously doubt he’s gonna do anything like that.

I’d say Mittelstadt might have the upside of Boeser. But I’d also say Boeser might have the upside of Eichel. If Casey can exceed Horvat’s career that will be a win.

Incorrect.  Boeser was born Feb 1997.  He was 20.62 when the season started in October last year (2017).   Casey was born in November 1998.   He will be 19.8 years old in October 2018.   Difference of 3/4 of year.  He had two full years of college, not one and Casey will put up 55 pts. + in 2019-2020.   And as far as Boeser having upside on Eichel you might not have too many on this board (or anywhere) agree with you on that one.

So much for McPhee being a genius.

Quite the contrary.  He is 33 and face of the franchise.  Have you been to Vegas during the season?  The city loves him.  His jersey was #4 in sales for 2017/18.    The organization recognized about $25-30M in incremental revenue based on 11 Playoff home games that was 100% unplanned.   As far as on the ice,  during the playoffs he had the best save percentage and second to only Holtby in GAA.  Maybe his decline is sharp, but worth risk to lock him in until retirement.
