The goaltenders in ‘14 were Enroth and Neuvirth. Not sure how that tandem is significantly better. I’d say highly doubtful this team would compete for the playoff with those two. Or any two for that matter.

Retaining is very different when the existing term is 5 years. A cap dump is rarely anything greater than one year. In addition to this, Minnesota has no true “cap dumps” so retention is their only preference in making a trade cap compliant. I have no evidence to support this but I think Terry is 100% against retention. He wants the contract gone and paying $1-2.5m annually to see John play elsewhere would draw his ire.

I dont pretend to know anything about a Goaltenders development but what I do know is 40% of the top 50 winning goaltenders last year saw significant starts (25 or more) by age 22 or before. UPLs results in 2019 and 2020 could be concerning but he had flashes of really good play to end last season. At some point you need to know he can offer this team. Next year seems to be the year where this “experiment” might hurt the organization the least if it fails. He was drafted relatively high, and 22 seems to be the age when other organizations are giving chances to their young netminders. I don’t buy into the idea of shell-shocking a 22 year will ruin any prospect of greatness. Adversity does not build character, it reveals it. Let the kid compete for a chance to make the team.

For example if you play the Rangers twice in New York City it’s not 2 out of 82 games but rather how many days you’re in New York versus approximately 200+ days in an NHL season which could be far less as a percent. In addition to this any games played against Tampa, Carolina, Dallas, Nashville, and Vegas are not subject to state taxes.

Like who? Neither Minnesota nor Vegas have true “cap dumps” that will miraculously strengthen their roster/cap situations. Minnesota had two toxic contracts and it resulted in buyouts. Vegas discussions have supposedly included Smith to offset the cap hit John would add but he isn’t a cap dump. Just someone who would get pushed outside the top six so is assumed included in a return. He has some value.
