  1. Hard to judge anything since I didn't see it, but from the comments Tage was surprisingly good in a sloppy game all around with lots of mistakes. That about it?
  2. Zegras is very offensively gifted, but Cozens is a more complete player. Either could star in the final (or both) but I'm happier we have Cozens coming to the Sabres. I've seen every game Canada played and I absolutely love this guy. Can't wait for the day he wears the C in Buffalo, which he will. Final will be fast, that's all I can predict. Both teams very skilled and very fast. It's strange to an old timer like me that the North American teams were faster than the European ones. Always used to be the other way around. I think Canada is the better team, and will win, but a hot goalie or a little luck could turn it either way. Should be fun.
  3. I will confess I rarely think of him as a Sabre guy. He's forever associated with Edmonton imo, much like Bowman with the Canadians. So he was here. he did a better job than some of the others. Always sad when somebody dies though. RIP John.
  4. He looks like he could get work as an extra on Vikings. Family history is Dutch but he kind of looks like a Swede. Must be the hair 🙂
  5. Relax. Nothing serious. It's just camp.
  6. I'd say his best game so far. Like Quinn, he seems to have improved as the tournament has gone on. I think Johnson will need a few years in the AHL but he could become a Sabre.
  7. I honestly can't find a flaw in Cozens' game. He's a dominant player at this level and imo is NHL ready. He is smart, strong, tenacious, makes good decisions, is defensively responsible, a team leader and obviously highly skilled. There may still be an adjustment period, and like anyone his age he could still stand to get even bigger and stronger, but I can see him starting the season at least with limited (and slowly growing) minutes. Quinn is also showing more potential. He still needs development, but he has seemed to get better and better as this tournament has gone on. I don't disagree with most of what was said about Peterka (in response to my assessment) and maybe the floating was due to the extra ice time, it's possible, but I still see him as a 2-3 year from now guy if he keeps developing/improving. Still makes him a good pick if that turns out to be true. Devon Levi looks like a guy we should have drafted. 7th round! Florida might have a good one there.
  8. Lazy play by Peterka on Germany's late power play chance gave away their slim hope. My final assessment on Peterka is he is a fast and fluid skater. Very skilled and could develop into a goal scorer BUT he is not NHL ready yet, needs to work on his defensive game, strength, and level of compete to make it. He has a tendency to be a bit of a floater at times like many young offensively gifted players are. With the right development and attitude he could be a player, but not for another 2-3 years imo.
  9. This would be the crux of my skepticism. I'd buy into the losing weight is good argument if he was a track athlete, a runner, but for a young hockey player who should already be in great shape, he needs to add muscle to compete with men, like Cozens did. Night and day those two in comparison.
  10. ya, but he's fast enough to play. He's not very strong on the puck imo and lacks compete. Strength would help him more. I don't think losing a few pounds will make him a better skater to the extent that he'd have to be to make up for that. Ya but how old are you? He's a kid and an athlete. Usually not the recipe for a pot belly. Muscle weighs more than fat remember.
  11. Don't see how. He should be adding muscle, not getting lighter. Anyway, I wouldn't put too much stock in who is lined up with who right now. Ralph is a mixed line chemistry kind of guy and he's going to mix and match with the new guys until he sees who clicks with who. Based on last year and the things he said he is also a work hard and play more (and vice versa) guy so the entire line up will be fluid unless the first game group keeps winning. We might finally have enough talent where hard work can be rewarded and slackers can be sent to the press box. For years we've never had that. There was never any way to sit a guy without hurting the team. I also have no issues with not rushing Cozens. By the end of the year I think he will have worked into the main group but easing him in slowly is not a problem.
  12. This is what I wonder too. Chara was going for low money and you'd think one more (short) season to plug the holes and provide leadership but I guess they are high on some of their youth. Maybe Kevan Miller is actually fully rehab'ed and ready to go? Either that or maybe Vaakaneinen is ready to step up. Don't know enough about them.
  13. Depends on the game but I'd say overall probably. Definitely consistent and he's also a team leader. There's a LOT of talent on that roster though so on any given shift all kinds of players shine. Goalie looks real good too. Hopefully less injury prone.
  14. Weird. Anyone hear any rumour as to what's actually wrong with him? Everything I heard seemed vague and evasive.
  15. Cozens was dominant. Byfield was dominant. Quinn looked pretty good. Again though, weak competition so hard to judge. Finland game will tell us more. TSN said Cozens' nickname was the "Workhorse from Whitehorse." I like it and vote we adopt it.
  16. I don't ever remember noticing him playing. Is he a tough guy? Will he bang people around or drop the gloves if needed? or to put it another way, could he play for Boston? If not, I'm kind of indifferent.
  17. Who's Michael Houser?
  18. idk why you think it's so wrong. We've talked here many times about various trades that involve dumping salary one way or the other. Didn't help us, but Pitt basically gave us Sheary for free when we took on Hunwick's salary. It's the new NHL. If you are in a rebuild and clear your cap space, you can then negotiate with teams that need to cap dump and make sweet deals for yourself. Ottawa was a screwed up hockey team, but last year and this have shown themselves to be doing a very smart rebuild. They will be good again in no time the way they are going. We could use a little creativity around here.
  19. You're just mad we didn't do something like it.
  20. Dylan Cozens being praised today on TSN's That's Hockey for his leadership abilities in Canada's game against Slovakia. Praised by teammates, coaches, and announcers. So everybody feel good today.
  21. Okay if you go with that "he's a human being" thing you are never allowed to dislike or hate any player on any team ever so forget that nonsense. (Marchand's a human being too...........) I simply have not and will not forgive him for standing by in that game where Eichel got trashed. I said then I'd have cut him to send a message and I stand by it.
  22. Seems to me he's spreading his strengths around and trying to create a situation where he can just roll lines and dominate the Euro teams that have less depth rather than loading up on one line. This might change when the serious games start.
  23. lol, I didn't even know we still had him. Good riddance.
  24. Czechs have always played their best against the Russians. They have historical hatred. I remember a game way back against the dreaded red army and the Czechs were supposed to lose big and they banged the Russians around the ice. Hit one so hard he went over the boards and those were the days of soft Euro hockey where nobody hit anybody much. Guess it still holds true. Quinn had his best game so far imo. Looked like he belonged with the rest of them. beautiful play by Cozens to set up the game winner. We have a future!
  25. That's not fair or valid. Anybody in any workplace knows they further by making connections and having friends in high places. You alienate people and you'll get bit in the butt by your karma so to speak. Hockey GM is no different from any other professional career or corporate job.
