  1. Yeah, I’d guess it mainly stems from people preferring to just use average when things are average, and that morphed mediocre to “baseline competence” or “slightly below average”.
  2. No, but my first memories of actually watching the Sabres (I grew up listening on the radio) are from that series. My best Sabres memories are probably from some of the games I went to in person: The 5-2 drumming of the Flyers during the 2018 10 game streak. Went with a few friends who hadn’t seen hockey before and it was a great game for that. 4 goals in the first and a fight. Another great moment, this hit: Was an otherwise lackluster game, but this hit on Carter Hutton got the stadium amped up, and was a great moment. Definitely my favorite Carter Hutton memory despite him later becoming a Sabre.
  3. I feel like mediocre has the the intonation that it’s slightly below average. If a team was being referred to as mediocre, I would expect them to be in the 17th-20th range.
  4. I think I may be the youngest at 21..
  5. Not going to make an argument that we have a future, as on a night like this that seems pretty hopeless. However, I would think it’s hard to argue Ottawa has a future, considering they were supposed to be contending for a playoff spot last year, and this year, they have the 2nd worst points percentage in the conference (just behind the blue jackets).
  6. Seems to be a product of bad puck luck for Dahlin so far this season. Dahlin has the best analytics among our defenseman, with the highest Corsi % and Fenwick % among our defenseman. When Dahlin is on the ice at even strength, the Sabres have 52.1% of the shots, and 53.8% of the expected goals.
  7. To be fair, this is the first time that the roster is fully healthy (minus Girgs). Gives us line combos that have been more consistent in the past. Hopefully that continues.
  8. He never looked like our most important player last season, neither the eye test nor analytics back that up. The only reason that was ever an idea, was our record with/without him. And that was more a testament to our defensive depth, as his injuries often coincided with other defensive injuries, and our depth was bad enough that Bryson was still in the top 6.
  9. As SwampD said, it would depend on the nature of the trade. If it was a buy type trade, I would not be mad with sending one of our current good players in a package for an elite player (think Tuch in the Eichel trade). If it was a hockey trade, with 2 teams trying to shore up their rosters to improve, I wouldn’t be upset unless JJP, Benson, Mitts, Dahlin, or Thompson are moved, and to a lesser extent Power. JJP and Benson have both been good this season, and I don’t want to give up on their very promising future. Mitts and Dahlin have been out best players this season, I think moving them would be a message that we really don’t care about winning. I just got a Thompson jersey as a gift, so I’d be peeved if he got moved immediately. If Power was moved, I’d definitely need a good defenseman coming back. Otherwise, as long as we’re not getting a terrible deal, I wouldn’t be mad. If it was a sell type trade, where we’re sending a player for picks/prospects, I’d be pretty damn mad.
  10. Watched the first period, fell asleep in intermission, woke up and it’s 6-1. Didn’t watch the rest.
  11. Considering the past 2 years he was getting 1-2 games a week, I’m not worried about his development being harmed from lack of play, especially when you also think about how he just got 3 games in 5 days.
  12. Levi got 3 games in a row, what makes you so sure that he’ll get only 2 games in that stretch?
  13. Almost correct. According to this, DC is 4.4 goals behind the expected goals for his shots with a league average shooter. The model also incorporates that Cozens is a below average finisher, and has him at 4.2 goals less than expected for his shooting talent.
  14. I think the majority of the negative feelings regarding Swift is largely due to the strong feelings of the fans. She gets a ridiculous amount of attention and support, and for the people that think her music is just okay, it’s annoying seeing how much she is overrated, and seeing her shoved in their faces so much.
  15. More like we kept Asplund+Tage Thompson+Bjork over Will Borgen. We protected 7 F 3D, if we wanted a 4th defenseman, we could only keep 4 F
  16. All I ask is they don’t go down 2-0 in the first.
  17. Part of it is the language that you used in your earlier post. “We mighta blown that one” really comes off as he might be a bust. As a reader, it definitely a lot closer to Quinn being a possible bust than “at this point he might not be the best choice”. In the NHL draft, you can’t expect a GM to pick the best remaining player on the board. There are great players that fall every year, some going in the 3rd-7th and in a redraft years later would end up top 5, but that doesn’t mean that the good players picked before them are “blown picks”. Back to your actual points, I am still very content with the selection of Quinn. He had .51 PPG last year, which is a solid rookie season. Along with that, the history of his development has always been a moderate first year in the league, and an explosive second year. Hard to say that would continue in the NHL, but I still would have expected an uptick in production pre-injury. I’m not expecting a ton this year, but I have confidence he’ll be better than 3/4 of those players next year.
  18. One thing here: hockey players typically have quicker returns from Archilles injuries, as the skating boot gives a lot of support so that there is less chance of a re-injury, and cuts down on the strain.
  19. I disagree here, while that line did play well together, I think the lineup is better served with Mitts and Benson on different lines. Both Mitts and Benson, while they do have goal-scoring ability, their passing and set up ability are their biggest threat. They are the closest the Sabres have to pure playmakers among the forwards. Thompson, Skinner, Cozens, Tuch, Quinn and Peterka all range somewhere between balanced (passing vs shooting), and more on the goal scoring side. I think their abilities would be better suited separate, to set up our various goal scorers.
  20. Expected goal percentage is the ratio between the expected goals for and against while a player is on the ice. Team relative expected goal percentage is standardizing that based on the team average. expected goals for/against are calculated by taking past data on how likely shots of different types (slap shot, clean breakaway, wrister, etc.) from different areas of the ice are to be goals. So if there’s a 20% chance of a clean slot shot going in, a slot shot would give an expected goal of 0.2. Adding up the expected goals of each shot over the course of a game would give your expected goals.
  21. I don’t get how 3 players jumped him and not one roughing/instigating
  22. I’d assume Tage to IR.
