  1. Unfortunately for the Sabres, the second half of the season is about counting points lost not points gained. Tonight they lost a big point and dropped a spot in the standings. Tough break for Enroth, I get a feeling he may have played his last game as a Sabre. Too bad, the kid had talent.
  2. Score one for "parity." The Sabres are only 4 points out of 8th place and have only 6 wins in regulation out of 24 games played. Only Columbus has fewer, 5, in one fewer game played.
  3. I would expect those not familiar with the flow of the game not to be able to recognize a hockey play. Giradi's hit by rule was a penalty which he served. What Kaleta did was not a hockey play in the flow of the game. It was a careless cheap-shot that Kaleta is very fortunate didn't result in serious injury.
  4. In this case. the players. I don't think Shanahan is biased at all. What he is is ineffective. His base concept of isolating incidents and individualizing punishment prevents him from being truly effective. You can't effectively get the message across by treating each occurrence as if they occurred in a vacuum. Another factor in the ineffectiveness of of player discipline is the NHLPA. As an "Association" they seemed more concerned about players missing games due to NHL driven sanctions than they are player on player violence. A player's "Association" should be driven by the best interest of the players, when it comes to protecting their own rank and file, they clearly are not. One change I would love to see is to have the team with the offending player pick up the salary of the injured player for the duration of the injury and have it also count against their Cap. A financial incentive is the best way for teams to keep a tighter reign on their own players.
  5. The purpose of discipline is to alter behavior, not fairness. The NHL alters rules to favor the more talented players, why wouldn't they use discipline the same way.
  6. Sports is a star driven business. Without the stars the marginal players would have no reason to go to the rink. It has nothing to do with being fair.
  7. Like it or not, that reputation will haunt Kaleta his entire career. Is there a professional sports league, outside the WWE, that doesn't. No league would survive if they allowed the marginal players to take out the more talented players. Kaleta hit Richards from behind, into the boards with a cross check. It was inexcusable. The Sabres might as well waive Kaleta when he comes back, and marginal play he makes will likely be called a penalty.
  8. There is no way the two plays are comparable. One is an unnecessary cheap shot and one was a hockey collision that happens every game. Kaleta f'd up and he should be happy he only got 5 games.
  9. I started reading this page and it took me some time to realize most of the posts were from a year ago.
  10. Just looking over the standings and I have to say good thing divisional playoffs are a thing of the past. The Sabres are 7 points out of fourth and they have the worst goal differential by 21 goals.
  11. About turning the conversation in a new direction. With Miller, Vanek and Pominville all facing the final years of their contracts, where are the cries from this fan base for this team to go balls to wall and try to win right now? I mean just completely sell out for a run next year? I mean if it takes trading Grigirenko or whoever to bring in older pieces to win right now, why not go in that direction? I think there is a good discussion to have on this train of thought.
  12. I'll admit I'm a old curmudgeon. It's takes a lot for me to get excited about offensive players these days. As I've said before, I've seen a lot of talented offensive players come and go. Not trying to put what Hodgson has done down, at this point I have an idea of what i would like to see the Sabres become and certain players fit that vision and others don't.
  13. The Sabres aren't exactly a perennial playoff team with Miller. It's time to take serious inventory and decide on a direction.
  14. That's understandable, I'm an old timer who has seen over the years that players like Foligno and Kassian are hard to come by. It was exciting for the two seconds that they were both Sabres. I am a believer in a bigger, stronger and tougher Sabres team.
  15. And you'd still be wrong. Right now the development of Foligno and Kassian seem to be on similar tracks. Long term, IMO, this franchise would have been better off with both Foligno and Kassian in the Sabres lineup.
  16. Wouldn't Calgary be considered the team putting him on waivers? Maybe I am misunderstanding the waiver wire process. For example, I thought if the Sabres sent TJ Brennan to Rochester and he had to clear waivers that every other team in the NHL had a chance to claim him. The only way he could return to the Sabres he would have to clear the 29 other teams. Does it work another way?
  17. Could Calgary put in a claim?
  18. Peta is the extreme, they are the animal lover's version of the Tea Party or the Church. Most animal lovers, like myself, understand the need for meat as a food source. It's the abuse and things like animal testing, skins and furs used for fashion and the poaching of animals like gorillas, Rhinos and elephants that most have a huge problem with. Many early cultures only killed what they needed to survive and honored their kill with ritual and prayer. Why do they still use animals for testing when we have overcrowding in our prison system? Why not allow non-violent prisoners to volunteer for scientific testing in exchange for time credited to their sentence based on the scientific test and any after effects?
  19. This will be the Rangers 12th home game in what will be their 20th game of the season. That is a scheduling quirk the Sabres can take advantage of in the second half of the season. Making the playoffs seems like a daunting task at this point. If you break down all the teams that currently stand between the Sabres and a playoff spot individually, the task seems a bit less daunting. Of course it all begins and ends with the Sabres themselves. Consistent effort and taking advantage of situations as they present themselves, as they have the past three games, is a must.
  20. This may be the best pic ever posted on this board. That is a beautiful looking dog.
  21. Inkman is 100% correct. The Sabres can keep Miller, along with Vanek and Pominville, sign them to extensions and continue to produce a product that is a perennial playoff bubble team. At that point you might as well keep Regier and let him do what he does best, move secondary pieces in and out of the roster. Some fans wouldn't mind that. Some fans have succeeded in tricking themselves into believing this team is a player or two away and are happy with the franchise being in a perpetual state of being one or two players away. Some will only be happy with a complete rebuild.
  22. My thought was based on the teams below Colorado passing on O'Reilly.
  23. IMO, it is important to separate fans reasons for wanting the Sabres to move Miller. In my case it is a matter of Miller's value and the position of the franchise. The assets you can obtain for Miller today are more of a value than Miller will be in 3-4 years from now which is when I expect the Sabres to be actual contenders at the earliest.
  24. I wouldn't say that. The Batman avatar is pretty cool. I sincerely doubt the Sabres front office is prepared for a move (trading Miller) of that magnitude.
  25. If Colorado failed to match the offer sheet and O'Reilly goes through waivers, could Colorado then claim him of waivers ending up with the player and the compensation?
