Looking at the Eastern Conference standings, of the 8 teams currently in a playoff position, no team is currently under the actual .500 and no team has a negative goal differential. Winnipeg, the 9th place team is also over .500 at 23-21 but is a negative 12 in goal differential. All the remaining teams are under .500 and have negative goal differentials except for Tampa who is even. The Western Conference is a different story. The top 6 teams are all over .500 with positive goal differentials. Minnesota is over .500 and has an even goal differential. he remaining teams are, including Columbus who currently holds 8th place, are all under .500 with negative goal differentials. Detroit in 9th and Dallas in 10th are the only two teams with a chance to finish above .500 and have a positive goal differential. It will be interesting if either will pass Columbus.

Miller was rattled and he was pulled in a game where the Sabres season was on the line. Miller is one the Sabres better players, they needed him to be one of their better players and he wasn't and they lost. That has to be factored in to any discussion on keeping Miller or not.

Pascal Dupuis may just be the biggest bargain in the NHL this season. 20 goals, 16 assists and a +30 for the bargain basement price of $1.5 mil.

A few thoughts from last nights game. Someone needs to tell RJ that when a team is down by 3 goals after the first period and ends the second period down by 4 goals that the Sabres did not "close the gap." The "gap" increased by 1 goal. Someone also needs to tell RJ that when you give up three goals in 1:14 at the end of the period it's OK for the fans to boo, even if two of the goal go in off skates. Miller being pulled was very reminiscent of the last game of the Philly series. The Sabres were moving along nicely until a game mattered and they had to win. A must win game and they crumble. Being eliminated and having zero pressure on them it would not be surprising if they win out. Ron Rolston seemed flustered in his post game comments. He may be a nice guy and a good hockey mind, he just might not be cut out for the pressures of being a head coach in the NHL.

All signs "indicate he has a great work ethic?" Because he works out Gary Roberts? His great work ethic certainly doesn't come across on the ice. Hodgson has looked as uninterested as the rest of his teammates this season. An I am the one accused of "glamorizing?" I read this board and it doesn't seem many "fans" are having fun watching this team play. Actually, i seems this roster of players causes more anger than anything else. We definitely have different ideas on what constitute being a fan. IMO, being a fan means never having to lie to yourself about a player or the team. I have strong opinions on what type of players I would like to see wearing a Sabres uniform and the type of players I think can turn this franchise around making them "fun to watch" and becoming a true contender. Contender for a Cup not just a 8th or 9th place. Cody Hodgson doesn't fit that mold.

Boston, Rangers and the Penguins will be a nice test coming up.

He's the type of guy you want around when rebuilding. He is a player that can't afford to be comfortable, the moment he is he'll find himself back in the AHL.
-
The big games tonight are Minnesota @ Calgary and Dallas @ Chicago. The Wild are just two points out of 9th and the Stars have the ROW tie breaker advantage.
-
The idea of Luongo being free to sign with any team in the East is troublesome. He is just what teams like Tampa, Philly and Toronto need.
-
We'll have to agree to disagree. Vanek has already banked a ton of money. IMO, his next move will about about legacy, he'll still get paid a big time contract, I can see his focus being on putting himself in the best position to win. I think it will at least be a few years, if you're Vanek and you can call your own shot, do you want to sit around and wait a few more seasons for a chance to contend? Wasn't there a comment from Vanek after Pominville was trades about his unwillingness to sit through a long rebuild?
-
One move that makes a ton of sense for this off-season is Roberto Luongo going to the Devils if Martin Brodeur retires after this season. I'm not sure what type of return the Canucks would get. The Devils are like 0-10 since Kovy went down with injury which has them within shouting distance one of the top picks in the draft. I doubt the Devils would give that pick up.
-
You don't think he would pass on the 12.5% for a chance to play in the playoffs and possibly for a Cup?
-
If true, this isn't the type of player you want in the locker room when rebuilding.
-
Why would he? He'll have the entire league knocking at his door. He's too smart to sign an extension and waste the rest of his career in Buffalo. He was prepared to leave once, there is no reason to believe he isn't looking forward to a better situation. He'll pretty much have his pick of teams, why stay with a team that is at stage one of rebuilding?

At no point in this thread have I glamorized Zach Kassian. Really! ;)
-
There's something wrong when Philly and Tampa are both poised to for top five picks in this upcoming draft. With all the talent they have it just doesn't seem fair. I am very happy for Jhonas Enroth. The kid has deserved a chance to play and he is finally getting a chance to show what he can do. He has earned the start in Boston on Wednesday. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing Enroth close out the season.
-
I would try this someday, but being honest about the team I follow and removing any fanboi wishful thinking from my opinions has served me well over the years. ;)
-
If i did that every time it was warranted I'd have many more posts. ;)

The Sabres are 24th in goals against, dead last in shots allowed per game (including 177 shots over there last five games) and just last week gave up 9 goals to Montreal and Winnipeg. How are they any better? There has to be a level of talent in order to qualify as depth. The Sabres do not have depth.
-
Sorry 11, I meant in general from the masses. Sort of like this off-season when so many were talking about all the talent and depth of the group of defensemen the Sabres went into the season with. There were only a few who said the defensive depth of this team was a myth and were proven right. "If you're not the lead dog the view always looks the same." If this saying is true than there are many here who should be able to pick my ass out of a lineup.

Similar things to what I read a couple of years ago about Tim Connolly & Drew Stafford. Looks as if I am ahead of the curve again.

Hodgson has some offensive talent, on a team starving for any talent they can scrap up. They are forced to use to him in situations they otherwise wouldn't because the overall talent level on this team is so piss poor. On a team with decent top six talent Hodgson get's relegated to third/fourth line duty and some PP time. It's similar to the Stevie Johnson is a #1 receiver argument. The Bills have little talent at the wide-out position so Johnson is the default #1 where his talent level is at more as a 3rd option type receiver that can occasionally step into the #2 spot. It's a common problem on teams in the Sabres position, they are forced to put players in certain positions they wouldn't normally if they have a better pool of talent to work with.
-
He's not thrown out there because he is proficient at it. He's a high profile prospect who get's tossed out there because the Sabres don't have anyone else.
-
There is no need to "try" at all. Hodgson is a one dimensional player that when he is not scoring, which is often. brings nothing else to the rink. Kassian being a physical player that brings more to rink will, over time, mature into the big physical winger the Sabre fans have always begged for. Hodgson is a lot like Drew Stafford as I have said. Three or four years from now Hodgson will look pretty the same as he is now.
-
Who's resorting to "hyperbole?" Might want to take a good look in the mirror. Putting together a couple of decent seasons over 15 years is not a rate of success to be proud of. You can clutch on to the injuries excuse, or any other excuse, like Linus clutches his blanket. In the end we are talking about a franchise that misses the playoffs 7 out of 15 seasons. A franchise that over the years has had difficulties producing consistent efforts. There have been some brief moments of success, not enough to be satisfying to the discerning hockey fan. The Sabres are usually the team that blinks first. Injuries, foot in the crease, Gilmore not back-checking or a dozen other things, there is always that moment that leaves the Sabres Nation shaking their head wondering if it will ever be our turn.
