Why does he automatically have to be "our answer?" A team without a clear starter at QB is picking up a veteran with starting experience and had some success in the NFL. As far as the trade, if the headline was McCoy trade to AFC East 99% of the reactions without knowing the team who be "F'n Patriots!" This, IMO, is like the Kane trade. A level of a deal I would have not thought possible a year or two ago. This Bills just added the #3 rusher (yards) in the NFL to one of the League's best defenses. This is exciting stuff. The Bills should be applauded for this move.

Chris Stewart is another player who carries that 1st round draft pick albatross around his neck. If teams can adjust their expectations of Stewart to a more realistic level and he is allowed to gain some stability in his career, IMO, he can be a valuable player to a winning team. I had hoped the Sabres would keep him, I hope now they look to resign him come July 1st. This bouncing around teams, which will likely be 5 teams (unless he re-signs with the Wild) before he turns 28 is the worst thing to happen to a player like Stewart. I think history has shown that players not just plug in and go.

Kane & Bogosian are a good answer, Reinhart I won't start counting on until he shows he can play in the NHL. I feel the Sabre way about all the prospects. If more of the prospects turn out like Girgensons than say Grigorenko than you may be right on with your timeline.
-
How about 2019? Here we are in 2014-15 and what are the Sabres realistically taking forward? Girgensons, two young blue liners, the hopes of whoever the top pick and what? I for one was hoping to come out of this mess of a season with something more going forward. I see two possibly three more lotteries in the Sabres future.

Part of the sell to Stewart is the franchises willingness to commit to him. It's easier to keep him here than it would be to bring him back so why risk it. 2nd round picks are being tossed around like they're free. I have no doubt if Tim Murray wanted to end the day with 5-6 2nd round picks he easily could. Keeping Stewart in a Sabres uniform is far more valuable, it's really not even close. The tear down is already complete, it's time to build and Stewart is a great building block to keep around.

This was my initial reaction. Brett Connolly, IMO, doesn't fit the mold of a Bruins type player. It would make sense that the Bruins were offering picks for Stewart and the Sabres wanted that 'NHL ready prospect" which the Bruins didn't want to part with. So the Bruins go out and pickup another NHL ready prospect to move for Stewart. There is always that chance that Tim Murray doesn't want to trade Stewart or Mitchell. They are great guys to have on the roster going forward. Murray may very well be of the mindset that he will listen to all offers, but not of the desperate mindset that he has to get at least something for them. If that is the case I certainly wouldn't blame Murray. Stewart on the roster has far more value than two 2nd round picks that Boston gave up for Connolly. I wasn't too keen on Mitchell early in the season, his recent play has displayed assets I would like to see the Sabres keep around. There is a lot of dead weight on the roster, I wouldn't consider Stewart or Mitchell part of it.

So far the Yotes are having a great trade deadline.

I'm not one of to put all my faith into an alleged "savior." The future of this franchise in the hands of Tim Murray not whoever is drafted #1 this year. There are too many steps in the process of a rebuild, so many that if the Sabres draft #1 or #2 it doesn't guarantee success just as drafting 3rd or 4th doesn't guarantee failure. I like was Tim Murray has done to this point. The trade deadline is just the next step and I believe he will do well.
-
I disagree. I think getting Stewart to sign is an easy sell. He's facing the prospect of being with five teams before he's 28 years old. I think offering some stability would go a long way.
-
They have picks, I'd rather keep the 6' 2" 230 lb bull to hammer the D down low on the fore-check.
-
If Glencross and Stewart are comparable, unless a #1 is involved, I want nothing to do with picks for Stewart. I'd rather he stay and the Sabres try to extend him.

Drew Stafford V2.0

Absolutely Yes! People can question Kane's maturity and he may just be an a-hole, you can't question his desire and passion for the game. After years of watching this team roll out fragile players, I want a player like Kane, who has great talent and knows it, to instill some swagger into the young kids coming in. As Alice Cooper sang, "No more mister nice guy!" I want a team that fans from other teams complain about like we here complain about the Bruins.

Looking over teams and looking at situations that make sense I keep falling on Colorado and Carolina. I deal where the Staal brothers go to Colorado in exchange for a package including some #1s and Ryan O'Reilly just makes a lot of sense to me. The Canes can either decide to O'Reilly of deal him off as a rental. If a deal like this happens, I can see the flood gates opening on the 2015 trade market.
-
Any level of contribution or how quickly they can contribute from any top pick will be based on how well Tim Murray can build around these young kids and protect them, and I just don't mean physically. There have been just as many, if not more, blue chip busts as there have been success stories. Mismanagement of a talent of that level is easy and can be devastating to a franchise.

As it stands right now with the Kings making the playoffs, four of the five teams holding the top five draft slots have two 1st round picks in this years draft. The Tampa Bay Lightning, currently 7th in the NHL in points also have two 1st round picks in this years draft. With all the hype going into this years draft, I expect there is going to be a lot more moment of picks. Chicago will need to try to compensate for Kane being out of the lineup. Three teams are battling for the final wildcard spot in the East. Four teams in the West battling for that final Wildcard and final Pacific Division spot. Toronto will likely dump some pieces and things can really get interesting if Colorado overreacts to an extremely disappointing season. Things are going to get very interesting.

Right now that one is Kassian. Hodgson has one more goal than John Scott this season.
-
Does Stewart and the Sabres 1st 2nd round pick for the Canucks 1st round pick get it done?
-
Because it's a friendly dig to those that have been around a long time.
-
If you were TM, who would you target realistically? I've gotten the feeling that Murray would prefer NHL ready prospects over more picks.
-
Yep! A real hockey trade, that didn't workout for either team. And let's be fair, Hodgson would have to go on a tare for the rest of the season to reach "mediocre" status.
-
The return of Zach? Just kidding! Other than the Sabres 1st pick, is there enough quality assets, combined with Stewart, to get the Canucks to even consider moving Horvat? Was it Miller that cried after his first start?
-
Zassian with a 2 goal night last night, leaving Cody Hotdog in the dust, 7 goals 13 points in 33 games. Hodgson has 2 goals 8 points in 55 games. I just can't see where Hodgson has any trade value what so ever. Right now he is nothing but dead cap space. Of course, I post this with a wink and a smile. I am just sure glad I didn't signup to work out with Gary Roberts. Does anyone remember when that was a real thing?

The Wild are a staggering 8-1-1 over there last ten. The West is loaded, some very good teams are going to miss out in the West. Even though this has turned into another lost season for the Buffalo Sabres, The overall quality of the NHL product has been outstanding. I have especially enjoyed the reemergence of the Flames and Islanders. The Flames have as many wins (10) after trailing going into the 3rd period as the Sabres have ROWs. The Islanders continue to entertain.

One of the last things any NHL team team that considers themselves a Stanley Cup contender wants to see is the LA Kings on a 7-3 run holding down the final playoff spot with games in hand. The road to the Stanley Cup gets much harder.
