Peters was picked 30 spots before Brad Richards  Buffalo actually had 4 picks before Brad Richards was taken. #18 Dimitri Kalinin #34 Andrew Peters #47 Norm Miley #50 Jaroslav Kristek The Sabres most success pick in the draft was Ales Kotalik at #164.

The "why" is there is an apparent pecking order in Anaheim which begins with Getzlaf, Perry and then Ryan. If Perry didn't have the MVP season we could very well be talking about what the Sabres should be offering the Ducks for Corey Perry. Perry scored 50 and followed it up with 37 goals. I'll take that over Stafford's 35 game hot streak any day, every day.
-
Corey Perry is a former MVP and 50 goal scorer? If the Ducks are looking to move a forward, they are likely going to keep the MVP/50 goal scorer. This comparison makes absolutely no sense.
-
IMO, Vanek and Ryan are both top six talents. I would love to see both on the same line and same PP. Vanek, IMO, is a level above Ryan when it comes to goal scoring. I would expect Vanek would bring in a better return if the Sabres made him available.
-
Ryan is a legit top six forward. They don't come cheap. If the Sabres are going to turn things around and become a Contender they are going to have to swap out what hasn't been working with legit talent. Stafford is what he is, which isn't good enough if this team plans to move forward.
-
If Ryan's effort turns about to be as bad as Stafford's I can imagine a lot of people hating on him.
-
I seem to recall a lot of talk back then in regards to the "two captain" system where some wanted Drury to be the full time Captain and others wanted Briere.
-
Stafford is going into his 7th year and is going to be 27 come October. Should fans still be chasing the dream that he will put out a consistent effort at this point? Stafford has put together a large body of work that tells me it just isn't going to happen. He is 400 NHL games into his career, effort shouldn't be an issue. Ryan is an elite talent with three years left on his contract. Speculation on what Ryan may want four years from now is ridiculous. Comparing Ryan's and Stafford's production shows that there is no comparison. In 4 full seasons Ryan's career low in points is 57. Through Stafford's 5 full seasons he has only hit 50 points twice. Ryan is more productive and more consistent with his offensive production. There is no reason to believe that Ryan's production would suddenly fall off. Of the two, Stafford's lack of work ethic would lead one to believe if one of the two players production is to falloff it would be Stafford's.

This has been the Regier mindset for 15 years now.

A first round pick for a team likely to miss the playoffs is less valuable than Stafford, Sekera and Adam? Only if his play justifies the criticism. Which is difficult for some to understand.
-
You follow up a lame post with this? You are way off you game tonight.
-
Staffrord? Got hot for 35 games in a contract year. Sekera? The "best defenseman" on a team that missed the playoffs and had the 18th best gaa. Adam? Who played himself back to the AHL. 1st RD pick? The most appealing of the four aspects of the offer. If I were the Ducks GM? In a deal that would not involve Miller & Myers? I would want: Tyler Ennis Drew Staford Braden McNabb 1st RD draft pick. If the Sabres are unwilling to make the deal? I'll keep my perennial 30 goal scorer with size. Lame.
-
Thanks for adding this lame response to a really good conversation. Hopefully you'll have enough respect for the board to delete the post. If you think Stafford, Sekera, Adam and #1 is overpaying? that pretty much speaks for itself.

I think fans sometimes confuse "willing to trade" with "needing to trade." The Ducks are willing to trade Ryan. Columbus needed to trade Nash. Those are two completely different market places. If the Ducks were backed against a wall I can see the appeal of a Stafford and Sekera ++ package.
-
I wouldn't take either deal. If I were the Ducks GM I would tell Ryan he is staying put if these are the best offers I am receiving. They might be better off waiting for mid-season to see if a better market opens up for Ryan.
-
It would tell be they are willing just to dump Ryan. Ryan is a great talent, I can't imagine that a package of Stafford and Sekera ++ would be enough to pry Ryan out of Anaheim if all were well.
-
If the Ducks made that deal it would raise a huge red flag in regards to Ryan.
-
There's always a Buffalo connection.
-
Didn't Drury and Briere end up splitting up the locker room between them? The effect a player has on the locker room is based on the strength of their personality. IMO, Doan is the stronger personality, so I believe he would have a bigger impact on a locker room good or bad.
-
IMO, Avery and Semin are completely different situations. Avery is an attention ######. Semin's issues are more related to work ethic.
-
As much as I would love to see Doan in a Sabres uniform, I hope he stays in Phoenix.
-
Not every roster is a group of "fragile little children." IMO, Semin "flaking out" is not a real concern. If anything, I could imagine the Canes locker room being dominated by the Staal brothers.
-
It's what teams do. If plan A doesn't work you go to B than C. it doesn't take away from the fact that Semin is an elite talent and the Canes got him with zero risk. If Semin produces to the level of his talent the Canes rocket to the top part of the conference. If he Semin implodes they are only out $7 mil.
-
What's the cost of both?
-
That would explain why the trade hasn't been made. Maybe if the Sabres sweeten it with the rights to Pat Kaleta
