A terrible loss for the Senators and the NHL as a whole. One of the great young players out indefinitely. I hope for a full and speedy recovery. The NHL is a better league with Erik Karlsson playing.

Ryan O'Reilly - Get Him At All Costs - Who Do You Trade

You may be right. I'm just indicating that the timing of his improvement in correlation to his contract status, IMO, is a red flag. I would like to have seen a season like he had last season occur not in a contract year. You're talking a big investment. I would like to have a more established track record to base that decision on. -

You're talking about a player that had 26 points his first two seasons and spiked to 55 points in his contract year. The fact that he is not signed makes me believe that last season was all about the contract. Without that motivation, IMO, you are likely getting the 26 point a year player. -
Ryan O'Reilly - Get Him At All Costs - Who Do You Trade

I have great concerns about a 22 year old 18 goal scorer looking for a big contract. Drew Stafford scored 30 in a contract year and I still think he was overpaid. To give a kid like O'Reilly that kind of money or even more i sincerely doubt he'll ever see 18 goals again in his career. I feel the same desperation for a move like everyone one else. I just don't see the value in a move for O'Reilly. I want difference makers. I don't know if this kid is a difference maker. I can see the Grape Nehi signs on the dasher boards. -
GAME DISCUSSION THREAD GDT: Sabres at Senators 7:30 pm 2-12-13

I'm starting to feel the same way about drafting Myers and passing on Karlsson the same way I do about all the times the Bills drafted a dud and passed on quality players. If the Sabres were to make a change at this point I think I will be pi$$ed. There is nothing different about this team this season compared to the previous seasons. It would be a move of appeasement and not a change in philosophy which is desperately needed. -

5 wins in 13 games. The halfway point of the season will be here in 11 games. If the Sabres are going to have a chance they need to, at the very least, enter the 2nd half of the season at .500. That means they will have to go on a 7-4 run. I just don't see this team capable of pulling off that kind of run. We may be talking about which pieces this team should sell off very shortly. -
I'll judge Terry Pegula's ownership strictly on hockey related decisions. The bells and whistles mean nothing to me. If Pegula continues forward with Regier and Ruff and they fail to be successful than his ownership will be a failure up to that point. I said two years ago that there is no amount of money that can make Darcy Regier a successful GM. I believed it then and I believe it even more today. I look at the contracts given to Ehrhoff, Myers, Stafford and Leino and feel almost vindicated in my initial opinion. Terry Pegula's unlimited assets are only valuable if used correctly by deft GM who understands the value of players.
-
It's the single biggest hockey decision he has made. All other hockey decisions, including head coach, are affected by this one decision. It outweighs non-hockey related decisions a 100x's over.
-
Terry Pegula minus the man-crush on Regier & Ruff would be a better owner. I noticed you didn't answer my question. Do you believe giving Regier a contract extension was a good move by Pegula? Is there anyone willing to come out and say "yes."
-
Bash the writer and ignore the opinion, it's been a standard tactic on this board for as long a s I can remember. It's interesting what we are not reading. Terry Pegula made his decision on Regier, he extended him, where are the posts stating that is a solid hockey decision? People want to believe things are different under Pegula, yet not many are willing to post their support of the biggest decision Pegula has made since buying the team. Do you agree with giving Regier a contract extension?

Calm down Brent. ;) -
Can the picture contain Vanek and Pominville carrying Hodgson?
-
Can anyone honestly say that have seen "elite potential" from Myers the past 2+ seasons? I do know that Kessel was 7th in the league in goals last season. That's real, that's not hoping Kessel can score goals, the kid has proven it. Plus, Kessel is only 25 years old, he's not a thirty-something facing the downside of his career. It's it not unreasonable or far fetched to think you could have Kessel for the next 10 years and get anywhere from 200-300 goals from the kid barring injuries. That's based on his NHL performance over a solid 6+ year career. Right now the Sabres forwards consist of Vanek, Pominville and a bunch of question marks. I would like to replace the question marks with solid, productive known commodities.
-
I wish Pegula was more of a "casual fan."
-
What is this, Sofie's Choice? If I have to pick between the two I would go with Datsyuk.
-
Henrik Zetterberg or Pavel Datsyuk.
-
I don't believe Bucky Gleason wrote this article in an attempt to boost his "hits." The article is a reflection of the growing concerns of the fan base. He gave Regier an extension, wouldn't that indicate the "due diligence" on Regier has been completed? I expect that Pegula's "due diligence" was a similar process as Quinn's top to bottom evaluation a few years ago that lasted about 5 minutes.
-
That's the problem. The Sabres have a fan with a lot of money, they don't have an "owner."
-
I believe that there are people around the league laughing at the Sabres front office more than I would believe that Bucky Gleason is worried about "hits." I'm sure that there are many around the league jealous of Darcy Regier. Who wouldn't want to be in a position where you have no success yet get a contract extension.
-
A Sabres team with Vanek, Pomminstein and Kessel is better than a Sabres team with Vanek, Pominville and Myers. Kessel is a really good goal scorer, Myers is nothing more than wishful thinking at this point. I'll take actual production over the hope of a better Myers someday. I'm a proponent of a tougher Sabres lineup. I'll except a "softer" player if their offensive production is off the charts. IMO, Kessel as a goal scorer is off the charts. If he scores 30-35 goals a year from between the face-off dots, I can live with that.
-
I say trade for Chris mason right freaking now!!!!!
-
That's right, kill the messenger and ignore the message. Classic Sabre fan mentality. Bucky Gleason is adding credence to much of what has been said on this board for some time now. It's good to read that there are those from outside the organization without a vested interest that see what many here on this board has posted about. People outside the organization don't care about rugs, paint and statues. This team is no closer to being a contender than they were when Golisano owned the team. Why would they be when you keep the same decision makers in place. People on this board claimed that given a blank check that Darcy Regier could become a really good GM, they were wrong and the franchise continues to suffer under his management. I will include Ruff's retention under Regier's failures.

I wish this game was earlier, I really like the Sunday afternoon start times. Will the events of the weekend have any residual effect on the Bruins? We should hope so. The Sabres ended up with two points last night, they will need a better effort o beat the Bruins. -
Last night was Hodgson's best game as a Sabre by far. Overall, that had to be one of the weirdest games I have seen in a while. There was no flow to the game, the play seemed extremely choppy. The Islanders looked really bad, their passing was off and they seemed to be fighting the puck. Yet, they out shot the Sabres and ended up with a ton of scoring chances. The Islanders seemed to stumble around until they found themselves in front of Miller with the puck. It was really strange. Two points are two points. Bank 'em and move on.
