Getting ready: are players in town working out yet?
Thorny replied to dudacek's topic in The Aud Club
I think it was because we had the greatest goalie ever who bailed out so many mistakes merely being a very hard working team (all teams) was enough. We also had the player personnel who played that style: aka ability/talent -
Oh yes Yes but did he say the EXACT words? Mmmmmm?
-
Lmao! Yes. He didn’t say the literal exact words. What are we even doing here man every, single, solitary tweet I posted is imbibed with the fact he thinks the fans are dumb, specifically for expecting better. He literally says it time and time again. “Dumb for expecting better” AKA “be happy with what we have”. Im not LITERALLY using happiness in the sense of “oh he thinks fans should be jumping for joy.” Who would possibly think that? My contention, which I already reiterated to you upon request, is that his stance is “fans are stupid for thinking better is possible. Just shut up.” I’ve proven he thinks that. HE IS TAKING ISSUE WITH FANS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE 14 YEARS WHEN HE SAYS THOSE THINGS. He is literally saying the fans are wrong to be complaining. Po’d. Choose any word you like good god man Are you going to double down again? You are wrong. I can do this all day
-
More people know Promo’s schtik (great word) is being anti-fan than that the Sabres are on notice Everyone certainly knows THAT
-
It’s me. It’s because I made the argument or, he can admit he doesn’t read the board he moderates. One of the 2 Should be noted that every tweet I posted was from 2024. I didn’t cherry pick. Not even close. I didn’t dig deep. I typed his username and “fans” into twitter. It goes on like that, for decades. i can post more. I didn’t want to. I don’t want to post more. But if the board isn’t being read I’ll post from external
-
You are professionally, willfully obtuse with your postings to me. The essence of what I am saying is that his stance is, “fans are dumb and stupid for thinking better is possible.” That’s really all he talks about. How dumb the fans are If you don’t think THIS (and the tweets) qualifies as “fans are stupid for thinking better is possible. Just shut up.” you literally aren’t reading “what could Terry have even done” He is SAYING that literally. That meme I joke about, he actually said it. “What do you want Terry to do exactly?” The implication is it is beyond his control. It’s not even an implication, it’s stated outright If YOU’VE got something, that proves he thinks otherwise, you post it. Burden of proof is on you. Every post he makes I’ve seen has that tone
-
Lmao. I did ask him. He won’t respond because he knows he can’t. How about these tweets:
-
This is absolutely his stance I mean, read the material. Read even a portion of it. He never suggests anything to the contrary “this is the best it can be, support it. Fans are wrong and deluded to criticize.”

Do you believe having the head coaching position staffed and not left vacant offsets the fact we will be bottom 10 in spending and those teams are exceptionally unlikely to make the playoffs? Do you believe they feel the 2/160 designator is irrelevant, that they have as good a chance as anyone else even though we are spending less? Or do you believe the goal is to make the playoffs in some other future year?
-
How much are you willing to pay for a holographic Charizard? I’m putting together some funds… I can discount it as a plus to the extent he can work with him because he agrees with him Part and parcel, say it all the time
-
I agree with much of what you are saying, but there’s sort of an undeniable truth at play here that demonstrably shows it’s both, re: the bold. There are plenty of teams that spend and don’t win, sure: so that proves you need to be making wise moves and not just moves. That part is true. But the statistics illustrate that there’s a certain point where a lack of spending gets extremely prohibitive to winning. GMs navigating all the normal issues of building a competitive nhl rAHster appear nearly incapable in recent times of assembling said level of quality you speak of if they find themselves with a bottom 10 allotment in league spending. There results are just there, the data is there: only 2 teams in bottom 10 in payroll made the playoffs the last decade. That’s 2/160. That’s 0.01%. Zero point zero one percent of playoff teams in the last decade spent as we are Do playoffs seem like a reasonable goal if you enter into the season under those parameters? I DOUBLE DOG dare anyone to answer that honestly You have to spend a certain amount, and you have to spend it reasonably. Spending a small amount reasonably isn’t enough - it’s not a viable strategy if the goal is playoffs

And “ya, but what about..” isn’t a good argument, either. (Not saying you are making it). Drunk driving isn’t less of a problem because there are also other bad, illegal things people do behind the wheel -

Thorny replied to aristocrat's topic in The Aud Club
People don’t generally understand nor think there’s a reasonable chance they could kill someone else if they walk down the stairs, drunk. This would be because it isn’t, in fact, something that happens when people walk down the stairs drunk. If people are incapable of understanding the fact they are piloting a potentially deadly weapon, to others, while stepping behind the wheel drunk, after routinely being presented evidence to the contrary, that’s assuredly, definitively on them. And they are incredibly stupid people. Do better, your argument is very bad. In all honesty, it’s shocking how bad the argument is -
Of course it was Brawndo See bold Teams with serious playoff aspirations don’t spend as we do. It’s just a fact: if someone doesn’t agree they can argue with a literal wall
-
I haven’t run that math or indeed run anywhere anytime recently but I’ve alluded to it and posted links! Haha. It’s been posted a bunch around here, or some iteration of it. I think it’s like 2 teams in the last while. Brawndo most recently posted it IIRC. I’ll find it

Biggest part of the big picture is Lindy Ruff. No question it was the move made this summer with the most optimism in tow. Good article that can be read by all

It’s always been about this. The culture stuff was always a ruse. You might say “well it’s not a ruse it’s just only capably measured in wins” and that’s fine but I definitely don’t see it that way. Culture is just something we arbitrarily attribute to competently built teams. If we want to name a GM’s ability to configure this team in this way “culture”, that’s fine: but that’s not usually the general connotation. In truth the Sabres aren’t lacking “culture” in the way it’s almost always described, some sort of intangible ethic that makes the team work harder. The Patriots have been bad without Tom Brady. Their grand “culture” was merely, it turns out, “winning”, because they had the greatest player the sport has seen. The greatest, most touted sports Culture know to man was nothing without the talent. Even with the greatest coach ever. That’s EARTH’S SIGNPOST sports culture, the “Patriot Way” Don’t fall for it. -
“Shiny new toy” syndrome even applies when comparing bottom 6 players

@PromoTheRobot do you feel the fans should be there supporting the product right now? I disagree with both parts - - - Edit there’s no way anyone that follows promo on twitter or even just reads his posts here could think he doesn’t put the onus on the fans. He can correct me if I am wrong that’s why I asked outright. At best we’ll get a “I don’t blame the fans for being upset at 13 years but the new regime isn’t amendable to that and deserves patience.” Which, is the position I’ve pinned the stance at I know for a fact promo doesn’t think the internal cap is a thing promo has always felt the fans secretly want the team to fail: that’s his central MO
-
-
You are right. I guess ownership literally has no motive to field a winner. So, support a team that isn’t trying to win, and if you do, and they finally figure it out, they may leave anyways depressing
-
Yup, nothing from a winner. Except the oodles of added income playoff games would draw, games in which you do not pay your players But, other than that.. lol - - - NARRATOR: “everyone in fact did NOT know the Sabres were on notice” the fans are on notice!
-
It’s not so much that spending automatically solves the team’s problems: it’s that we know to a near *certainty* that teams that don’t spend will struggle. What we are doing doesn’t even represent a college try. Not spending to the cap, or close to, and operating in this way every year, is in fact a declaration winning isn’t the primary goal. This is because, well, they aren’t stupid: they can run the numbers, they understand teams that spend the way we do almost never make the playoffs. It’s going on 14 years, they KNOW it’s going on 14 years, and they aren’t making a true effort to make the playoffs. It’s…probably the most insulting behaviour in pro sports towards a fanbase by a franchise I’ve seen. At least first hand. And “they aren’t amendable to the full 13 years” need not apply. A) it does for Terry b)they are fully aware they are operating on behalf of a fanbase living in that reality (and therefore have to factor fan revolt into an accurate calculation) c)MERELY the current regime is well past its best before date re:making the playoffs so they’d be amendable to not spending to the cap even if the drought was just going on 5 years instead of 14
-
It’s not so much hubris as the fact I legitimately do not believe we would ever lose the team, in combination with the fact that, if it somehow came to that, it would indeed still be preferable to supporting an inept franchise that *literally* insults the intelligence of the fanbase by not even spending close to the cap, forever. they can fix the product. If they can’t, I can live with what happens
