Official: NHL expanding to Vegas for '17-18
French Collection replied to Hoss's topic in The Aud Club
KHL is having some financial issues with the dropping oil price, there would be a few decent players considering coming over. I'm not saying the NHL could ice 32 good teams, but the dilution would not be as bad as some think. Another couple of homes available for Martin Brodeur types who want to hang on for records, pride, one last chance or payday. I'm from the original six era so am used to the "dilution". -
Maybe they regret not re signing Benoit. Trying hard to get rid of him.
-
Maybe the Avs would take Benoit back as part of a package. His best season and their best in many coincided. Benoit, Grigorenko, Myers, St Louis 1st, islanders 1st for O'Reilly and Avalanche 1st.
-
O'Reilly is a solid young top six forward or top notch third liner on a good team. However, he only has a year left beyond this season while Myers has multiple years left. That has to come into the equation. I would do the straight up deal and try to extend him next year if he's a good fit. I like Tyler but he's not gonna be what we hope for.

Met Brendan Lemieux last night at OHL game. Very pleasant demeanour and signed for my son and my Sabres hat. He chuckled at my wearing the hat, not many Buffalo fans in this part of the world. I told him to keep working and bring some grit and scoring to the team. He played OK but didn't score. Didn't bring his usual trash talking game either. I think he has the fire in the belly to get to the next level. Not sure about his listing of 210 lbs, that's my weight class and I'd bet on my side. He does have the frame for a grinder though. Waiting for Bailey and Baptiste to roll through soon. Cornel hasn't been stellar.
-
Leafs should bring up Nylander right away so he can learn good NHL habits from Kessel. I find he looks rather feminine. Maybe my anti Leaf bias is blinding me.
-
Zemgus, Grigo, Risto and Nikita are a year older next year. Pysyk and McCabe should be an upgrade from Benwa's Mess. Reinhart and or Armia may be ready. One of Baptiste, Bailey or Lemieux could surprise. McEichel should crack the top six. The Isles and Blues picks or others we have or get for Staff, Stewart and a goalie could net us a top six forward. UFA group is not strong but we can look for 1 top 9 veteran. Other teams tight to the cap will have good players available to snap up for below market value as NYI picked up Leddy and Boychuk. The cap may not increase and may drop as the canadian dollar is falling. We will be better.

I get the eyes on the prize part of it all but it's painful to watch this as a long time fan. I hope I never need to see the word tank and Sabres in the same sentence again after July 2015.
-
Canada rested the Reinhart and McDavid lines in the third. No need to pad their stats or risk injury when the game is in the bag.

Baptiste with 2G and 1A for Erie. Lemieux with 2G and 4 PIM for Barrie, a few minutes left.
-
Sam Reinhart leading WJHC in scoring, 8 points in 4 games.

Duffer trying to backtrack on his meaningless WJC Canada-US game comment. Two points: Bragging rights and crossover opponent. Canada to face Denmark. US to face Russia.
-
Domi gets player of the game for Canada but his two goals were just as much of Sam's doing. The setups were nicer than the goals. Sam got an empty netter for good measure. Haven,t done the math but Sam may be leading the tournament in scoring. Larkin looked really good again, Fasching was a force too. Compher was shadowing McDavid in the first but didn't see much of him later in the game. The McEichel buildup was too much, these guys were almost invisible. A lot of pressure on them. There is a lot of talent out there other than those two. Some were saying it was not an important game but Canada now plays Denmark while the U.S. plays Russia. I would prefer the win on that fact alone.

Good comparison. I've seen play quite a bit and he takes a lot of cheap shots and stupid penalties. He can score but doesn't bring it every night. I don't respect big tough guys that resort to cheap stuff, like Lucic spearing privates.

McDavid has top end speed and quickness that Sam will never get but has not been all that effective. Nic Petan is another playing better than McDavid.

Near North Bay. Francis was good, a bigger body than Sam, but a similar skating style. Was the go to guy for many years in Hartford/Carolina but is best remembered for Penguin Cup teams. Second line minutes suited him. Larionov was cerebral, hence the nickname professor. Sam has that aura too. Larionov was never the go to guy but was a top six player for close to 20 years (Soviet and NHL) who made everyone a better player. Lasted a long time because of his brains.

I think we keep him, won't get much for him anyway. He can be our #1 until a better option is available. He will still not command top dollar after this season. He can help with Ullmark's transition to North America next year and see if Ullie is the future. Tim Murray will want his big goalie when we are ready to contend, not Darcy's leftovers. Shootout skills may be negated if the league adopts 3 on 3 OT, which they should.

Keep the bags packed Derek, UFA this summer. He may get another deal if he can help put out the Oil well fire.
-
Sam's face off skills were not NHL level for his 9 games but it's an area where his improvement can really help the Sabres. I would like to think Tim, Ted and Trots told him this part of his game needed work. Hope he can get a bit bigger too, 10 more pounds would make him harder to knock off the puck.

He'll get term somewhere else. Serviceable winger but we won't re-sign him or get into the bidding. Time for Armia, Baptiste or Bailey to step up.

Reading comments from Oiler fans. One guy suggested they tear down the team like the Sabres did. We're battling for last place yet they admire our rebuild! I have to agree their team is a disaster, while we see a light at the end of the tunnel. Their last 6 draft positions were 10th, 1st, 1st and 19th, 1st, 7th, 3rd and they suck that badly. They are a Carrion Juggernaut! Six consecutive years with a top 10 pick, including three firsts. I'd be embarrassed.

Glad to see Sam excel in this tournament. Doesn't have the speed of his wingers, but plays within his means. He is well positioned at both ends, good on face offs and can dish with the best of them. One TSN announcer (Ray Ferraro) compared him to Igor Larionov. That would be a very good career to have, and would benefit all of the Sabres players he plays with. Not an Oilers fan but, thinking Draisaitl would be better in Junior and then this tournament. Even though Germany sucks, he would be a star and regain some confidence.

Jordan Staal's first game back but Canes still lose. They should "win" a few more. I hate to see this team be pushovers and still hope we play well. Tankers will be numerous in the New Year and will make it difficult to be dead last. Second last still means a shot at first pick and second pick provided the last team wins the lottery. Decent McEichel odds with Hannifan/Strome/Zacha/Marner choice as consolation.

Sam with a solid game. Finn goalie Saros helped keep the score respectable. I concur with the people saying Eichel has had more of an impact than McDavid. A few more games to go, including a head to head.

Compher got more ice time than in game #1. Looked solid and showed some hustle. He got close to 2 minutes on one PP when they kept it in the German end. Fasching seems to have some net presence, if he has the guts could he be a Thomas Holmstrom type of player? I hope Canada-USA game lives up to the hype.
