This is the first time I've heard of it. Yeah it looks pretty bad. Not only long lines but many Dems were outright denied the right to vote because they had suddenly turned into registered Independents. Here's what the Arizona Sec'y of State said: “Yes. This is something that I know happened, and I know it happened to people in this room. It is not hearsay. It happened to someone in my own office. We know it happened.”

Here in NC, in general I would say it’s a tiny bit more GOP than Dem. We picked Obama in ’08, and there are actually more registered Dems than GOP’ers, although there are lots of Independents and they usually lean a little to the right. In spite of this, thanks to gerrymandering, we have a GOP super majority in our state Legislature (and GOP Gov). I don’t even know what 2016 Congressional District I live in, because the GOP legislature came up with such a gerrymandered map that the courts threw it out. They’re still working on one that’s legal. I’ve complained here before about the fact that they passed and have already implemented required voter ID. A week or so ago, the City of Charlotte passed an anti-discrimination law allowing transgendered people to use the bathroom of the sex that they identify with. So the GOP Gov actually called a special session, and then the GOP legislature passed a new state law that supersedes all local laws. Below is a description from The Atlantic: The law not only overturns Charlotte’s ban: It also prevents any local governments from passing their own non-discrimination ordinances, mandates that students in the state’s schools use bathrooms corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate, and prevents cities from enacting minimum wages higher than the state’s. So the latest development is the ACLU has filed a lawsuit against the bill, and the $4.5 Billion that the state of NC gets from the Feds for education each year is very possibly at risk. http://www.politifact.com/north-carolina/statements/2016/mar/28/pat-mccrory/gov-pat-mccrory-no-title-ix-threat-billions-federa/ Normally the Attorney General would represent the State for the ACLU suit, but the AG is a Dem, and running against McCrory (the Gov) this year, so the Legislature has to get independent counsel. There’s a similar brouhaha brewing in Georgia right now. The NFL, Coke, Apple, etc. have all threatened repercussions if Georgia passes their “Religious Liberty” law. Well, Georgia DID pass it and their GOP Gov, who is not necessarily considered a moderate, vetoed it, for the sole reason of (not quoting him) “financially, why the heck would we shoot ourselves in the foot like that?”. I totally applaud the guy for doing that, but this brings me to my point. A far too large part of the GOP, at any cost, would rather fight for the right wing than do the right thing. A number of red states have refused Federal funding for ACA at the expense of their citizens “on principle”. Many GOP Senators refuse to even meet with Obama’s SC nominee, even though most of the GOP Senators in the GOP controlled Senate voted in favor of his appointment to his current job in 1997. We’ve got the two main candidates for the GOP Prez nomination going after each other’s wives. We’re talking about letting people proudly walk into the GOP convention with guns. The examples of an “eat your young” mentality are stacking up at an alarming rate. I think we can all agree that the average American voter demographic may not be the smartest demographic out there. But if the GOP keeps up this scorched earth “strategy” at the rate they are doing it, there is going to be a big backlash at some point. As a Dem, I can assure you the 2nd worst thing that could happen to this country would be DEM super majorities in Senate, House and Prez. So to all of you sane GOP’ers, I implore you to work with the extremists of your party, and convince them to take a more balanced path, or that’s exactly where we’re going. But do it AFTER Hillary wins, if you don’t mind.

He DID screw over the Preds. He wouldn't even MEET with Poile. Good thing I'm not coaching the Preds, because the first time he plays against them, I would make it a game he never ever forgets.

Sweet! Let's even make it open carry. Can you picture Trump himself walking on stage packing heat for all the world to see? Then he could tell everyone his gun is bigger than Cruz's.

Talking strictly basketball here… So lots of old school Big East fans don’t like the new ACC. Guess what? A lot of old school ACC fans like the traditional ACC way more than this incantation. So how about this idea? Make a North and South division of the ACC. The South has FSU, Ga. Tech, Clemson, UVa, UNC, WFU, NCSU, and dook The North (old Big East) needs 1 other team to make this work + Va. Tech, L’ville, Pitt, BC, ND, SU and Miami. Miami/UVa/Va. Tech are somewhat interchangeable, and this would be a lot easier if Maryland hadn’t jumped ship to the Big 10 (which has 14 teams). Each division plays everyone else home and away (14 games per team). Then they play 4 teams in the other division. That’s 18 regular season conference games. In the post-season tourney make round 1 completely cross-divisional – South #1 plays North #8, etc.

Bill Murray's son is a coach for Xavier...and has never seen Caddyshack. This clip is hilarious. https://youtu.be/5z6deHfhKZ8

He doesn't necessarily say what he actually believes. He says things like this because he knows what his supporters want him to say.

No ignorance on your part here. That's a good question. Why Belgium of all places? Come to think of it, isn't the metro very close to EU HQ?

Even as someone who was always an ACC fan going back to the 70's, yeah, the Big East has had some really awesome teams and years. 1985 with 3 teams in the Final 4? That was obscene, but they all belonged there. STILL one of the best Final 4's ever. Edit: You really have to love the new ACC lacrosse, right? 5 teams and they were all in the top 7 in the NCAA tourney last year. That shouldn't even be possible.
-
Indeed! The ACC is starting to look like they were darn near the only ones invited to this party. That's perfectly fine with this UNC alum. But if dook never wins another game in history, that would be just fine, too.

In spite of this, your average Leafs fan will swear they're just a year or two out of contention for the cup.

I get that Garland is a good and moderate pick, but I don't get why Obama didn't pick Sri Srinivasan. Didn't the Senate vote him into his current job 97-0? Also, he's a minority and non-Christian. And he's only 49. If the GOP in the Senate shoots him down, they will look like political tools after approving him 97-0. And a lot of the commentary would be about racism and religious intolerance, and could possibly drive a few voters to vote Dem in November who might not have otherwise. Could it be that Obama knows Garland will not be approved, and then will pick Sri next, thereby making them regret not approving Garland?

I voted for Bernie today. No regrets.

Yeah, I'm rooting for them, too. It's amazing how many really good players have come out of Canada since they showed up. It very much reminds me of the leaps and bounds that US hockey starting making in the 1970's. Canada could be contending for medals in basketball very soon at the rate they are going.

This reminds me of an excerpt from Jack Handey's Deeper Thoughts. "I think a good gift for the president would be a chocolate revolver. And since he's so busy, you'd probably have to run up to him real quick and hand it to him."

Who finishes the season with more points... O'Reilly or Eichel?
BagBoy replied to pi2000's topic in The Aud Club
Good God, people! O'Reilly is just an injury call up from the AHL with 4 points! Wait...never mind. -
We need more chicks, man! I've had this song stuck in my head for 22 years and I hope it stays there. On a completely different note... and much more recently, this from Toronto's Alvvays...

I got it from my step-mom, so it wouldn't be the first time she has sent me crap. Phoenician fishermen or traders was the alleged origin. If this isn't right, I'd love to know what the real origins are.

The only thing I use cash for is haircuts and tolls, and I only pay tolls twice a year. The only exception is when I'm in Canada, then I need cash for the Beer Store. With credit cards giving up to 3% back I'd be crazy not to use them whenever possible.

Yup. I haven't watched any of the Dem debates. I think I only missed one GOP debate. They have been fun, but in a very head-shaking way. You are right though. Enough is enough. There have already been too many.

I hadn't heard that. Buffalo just had the World Juniors in 2011 and are getting them again in 2018. There wouldn't be any infrastructure issue with a World Cup of Hockey in Buffalo.
