Columbia Research Paper Looks at Fighting/PIM and Mortality Rates
kas23 replied to That Aud Smell's topic in The Aud Club
Correlation does not equal causation. Guys whose only job is to beat the snot out of opposing players likely have a much different mentality or view on life than finesse players and I highly doubt this is limited to the hockey rink. -
Yes, the conversation was in regards to developmental guys vs those coaches like Gallant or others who strictly want to play vets to get results. Donnie is a developmental guy no doubt, but who knows how he’ll be able to guide grizzled vets. Maybe he can do both.
-
I meant to say, only a developmental guy. He’s great at developing young talent. Just saying we shouldn’t paint him into a corner just yet.
-
I really don’t think we know if Donnie is a “developmental guy” or not. This is his first coaching job and he’s working with the players he has been given. It just so happens that most are very young. So, of course he’s going to be signing the “develop young talent” song at this stage. It remains to be seen what happens when these kids grow up. If he can’t adapt, then we can label him a “developmental guy”.

Yes. This is exactly what I saw. Here it is:

I’m pretty sure there is a documentary. I remember watching one. Or maybe it was a mini-documentary.

I kind of feel bad for him. Then I think for a bit and then I don’t.

This day on Sabres history- The beginning of suffering
kas23 replied to Weave's topic in The Aud Club
Where were you when you learned of the impending suffering? -
Correct. A TE that just catches balls is no different than a 3-4 OLB who never drops back into coverage (ie an EDGE). The whole idea that an OLB wanted to be paid as a DE spawned the EDGE position, not a change in the game. I’m sure there’s plenty of ball catching TEs would would love to be paid as a WR if hit with the franchise tag.
-
And just because a TE is drafted in Rd 1 doesn’t mean they won’t be good. A good TE is a good TE. Doesn’t mean that we would’ve been better of drafting him in the 2nd or 3rd.
-
Ignoring Vesey, we also had Portillo (who wasn’t going to sign) and Johnson who doesn’t look like he’s going to sign. I’ll add that Eichel signed, but having 2 of your 6 decent college players not signing seems concerning to me. I’d by lying if I said I enjoy this drama/distraction.
-
I agree. That’s exactly what you’re doing. Many of us have fond memories of that team. I doubt you’d find anyone not wanting to hear what Brian Holzinger is up to or anyone else that played on that team.
-
Now you’re throwing shade at Holzinger. Berglund is trash and nobody should care what he thinks.
-
It’s probably in Ruslan Pechonkin‘s (our Russian scout) best interest these players honor their local contracts.

Adams And Granato Media Availability Wednesday: What Do You Want To hear?
kas23 replied to Flashsabre's topic in The Aud Club
This was asked, but in the most obnoxiously subservient way that it took away from the substance of the actual question. It seems like our local journalists are more focused on hearing their opinions voiced rather than getting KA’s opinion. Wawrow wanted to know if KA could “guarantee” playoffs next year and KA got offended by that word and the whole question collapsed. He then asked KA if this past season was “a lost opportunity [to make the playoffs]” and this set KA off again. Nothing was directly answered. -
Oh geez, potato patato. Ok. They are getting the 31st pick (63OA) of the 2nd round instead of the 33rd pick (65OA) in the 2nd. You wrote all that out for no material difference. My point stands. We could’ve traded Johnson for a 2nd rounder before the 31st pick in the 2nd round, but that trade never materialized.
-
I don’t know. I didn’t speak to any GMs about him. But if a 2nd was available, I would’ve taken it. The comp pick we get back is at the end of the round, so any 2nd would’ve been earlier. There’s also the possibility he could’ve been moved as part of a package for a player.
-
KA should had shipped his ass out like he did with Portillo. Maybe nobody wanted him.
-
Correct. And if people want to poach Jason Karmanos, KA moves up to POHO and Karmanos gets one of those coveted 32 jobs.
-
It would be a consensus, as it is now. I really don’t think KA is making any unilateral roster decisions as a TM or JB did. Look, this isn’t about day to day responsibilities. It’s about how to keep our FO intact if another team comes knocking to poach. Giving a person a promotion, via new title and increased pay, is reason enough to want to stay in Buffalo. People usually like what they do. They leave jobs when their boss is unbearable or they don’t feel appreciated.

Adams And Granato Media Availability Wednesday: What Do You Want To hear?
kas23 replied to Flashsabre's topic in The Aud Club
Given he’s never played hockey at the professional level, I didn’t like how KA said Levi “earned” the right to those starts at the end of the season. Maybe I’m just taking issue with the word “earned”, but I could see UPL or Comrie having an issue with this. He should’ve just said “given his skill, we thought he gave our best chance for winning.” -
Was just going to say this. Untouchable unless we give them our next 3 1st rounders or some other stupid ask.

I agree. It was more despair and disappointment. I don’t recall people calling for heads (except for Norwood’s) or saying “the FO should’ve done [insert opinion]”. There was the “bickering Bills” label and in hindsight, that was probably deserved. It was a different era back then though. There was no social media. If someone wanted to complain, then could call WGR or write an opinion piece in the News. -
Top defenders will always get picked early, just like quarterbacks. There’s just a premium assigned to their position. Jiricek was injured most the year and still went #6. I’d be shocked if Reinbacher is still on the board for us. Players will get hyped up here on in until the draft.
