  1. lol...people here like to do that, its happened to me. You'll have your argument, have it twisted into its most extreme level.....you'll have it shot down but only when your point is taken at the most extreme.....not the 'meat' of the point you are trying to me. It happens. If you are going to stay around here get used to it.
  2. This is not the only one, but one of my all time favorite Cozens zone exits...
  3. Its pretty well knowing (I think) that Tage plays through a lot of injuries. At least I think he does. I wonder if his 'floating' and 'inconsistent effort' is less of a factor of him just being lazy, and more of a factor of: 1.) he's playing with injuries and/or 2.) He knows is energy 'burst' are best used pushing himself in the offensive end and often times he's a big gassed on the defensive end? Sure, any player who floats a bit would have that as an excuse to use, but it matters more when he is your best/most talented offensive player by miles. As far as the numbers go this season, obviously the Sabres are at their best scoring goals when he is on the ice. But defensively? The Sabres allow slightly less goals at even strength when Tage is out there this season than they do when he's on the bench. They are a LOT better offensively, and even slightly better defensively when he is on the ice.
  4. From what I have seen, Statistically Cozens being 'on the ice' in terms of advanced analytics doesn't really help or hurt the team. He's a non-factor as far as does he help or hurt the other 4 guys on the ice. The issue is he is wasting that spot in terms of his pure production. Of all the forwards over the last few years across the entire league that have as much PP time as Cozens (there are a bit over 100 players with significant minutes on the PP over the last 3 years), he is dead last in terms of goals, and in the bottom 2 or 3 in terms of PP points. So yeah, his usage on the PP is baffling. He's on every single powerplay and he gets 1 PP goal every 28 games. Take Greenway or even call up Brett Murray, have those guys stand in front of the net as a screen and they would probably get more PP goals just by deflections going in off of them. -Edit- With his last PP goal, he is no longer last. Out of 102 forwards with over 750 minute of PP ice time over his career, Cozens is not 101st out of 102 in terms of PP goals. Ryan Strome has 1 less, but I think that doesn't even count as Strome has a LOT more assists than Cozens and less chance for goals because he is used on the point a lot, basically playing on the PP as the 2nd d-man. Want to count PP total points? Again, he is 101st out of 102 guys there. On a side note about Wing vs Center for Cozens....Natural Stat Trick has Cozens playing 28minutes and 2 seconds at wing this year 5 on 5 (with Krebs at center for all of that time). In that time on the ice even strength, the team allowed one goal...so 1 goal allowed every 28.0 minutes. At center Cozens has 676 minutes and 29 seconds even strength at Center this year. 1 goal allowed every 18.3 minutes. That is a big difference...although a very small sample size. I'd give him a few games/weeks at wing with Krebs and see if those numbers continue. Get him off the PP, put him at wing with Krebs and see how it goes. For reference, the team as a whole allows about 1 even strength goal every 21.9 minutes.
  5. Some of us have been saying that for.....2 years now? Take a look at some of the Sabres "Worst" D-men over the last 2 seasons: Connor Clifton: in 442 minutes on ice where Dylan Cozen is numbers are CONSIRABLY worse than his numbers in the 1200+ minute with ANYONE else other than Cozens out there. Clifton Corsi% with Cozens: 43.71 (Awful), without Cozens 49.67(about average.) Fenwick% with Cozens 43.47 (awful), without Cozens 49.42 (about average). Shotsfor% with Cozens 44.27 (awful), without Cozens 49.12 (close to average). The most important analytic, actual goals for vs allowed % with Cozens 46.34..... without Cozens 55.05 (a really good number). Even strength, Clifton is a minus player when sharing the ice with Cozens. In over 1200 minutes where Cozens is not on the ice, he is a +11 even strength over the last 2 years.. This year a goal is scored against the Sabres every 16 minutes when Clifton is on the ice with Cozens. When Clifton is on the ice with ANYONE else this year, a goal is scored once every 26 minutes. How about the last 2 seasons combined? a goal allowed every 20 minutes with Cozens, without Cozens its every 26.5 minutes. Clifton, Bryson, Samuelsson, Dahlin, they all show considerably better numbers similar to the above. If you take out last year and look just at the smaller sample size of this year, the numbers are similar. The only 2 guys that I found that are slightly different are Power and Jokijarju. Their advanced numbers are more 'even' with and without Cozens and Quinn, but still not better. Look.....we don't need analytics to know that there are a group of forwards, led by Cozens and Quinn, that don't know how to play in their own end and hang the D-men out to dry every single game, almost every single shift if given the opportunity. The mistakes are visible to the naked eye and they happen alot with those 2 compared to even the rest of the forwards. What the advanced numbers DO show us is that, in some pretty large sample sizes, the numbers show that the team is a lot better....a POSITIVE team, probably a playoff team when 3-4 forwards are removed from the equation. As you mentioned....take Cozens and Quinn off of this team, and even our 2nd and 3rd pair D-men are pretty darn near good enough to be a playoff level 2nd or 3rd pair. A good veteran 2nd pair D-man would help this team a lot. What would help it more? Cozens and Quinn removed from this team and replaced with guys....even 'lesser talented' guys who play just AVERAGE without the puck. My opinion is that with just those 2 changes this would be a playoff team, and most of the analytics show that is probably true and supported by a lot of the numbers.
  6. Don't have a clue? First of all, I said, half with a question mark and then added maybe. 2nd, I may not know the numbers, but Canada seems to be shifting MUCH farther to the right than it has been in the past. How about reading my post before you come at me with "dont' think you have a clue" to see that I OBVIOUSLY put something in there saying I didn't know the exact numbers...but again, the country has moved to the right. You can disagree with me, but how about with a little class and decorum? You people on this board...first reaction for many of you is "don't have a clue" or "dont' know what you are talking about". Grow up with that stuff already.
  7. I think there is a subtle difference between "Trump" and "the threats" I don't think the booing has much to do with Trump simply being president. A good portion of Canada (half? maybe, I don't know) might vote for him if they had him as an option. It is more ANYONE or ANY country that talks your country down, attacks your leadership (even if YOU don't like your leadership, its ok for you to pick on them but not an oursider to pick on them) or certainly anyone talking/threatening/suggesting that you give up your status as an independant nation....there is going to be outrage against that. Whether its Trump, or if Biden said it, or Macron, Olaf Sholz or Putin.....ally or not....Anyone that says those things is going to elicit a booing response.
  8. I don't really think of Thompson as a player that has a ton of giveways from my observations watching the game. I know when the team is losing, the ones he has get POINTED OUT a lot more than when other players do, I'm guessing they think he is a high paid star so his play will be more scrutinized, but I don't see it. A quick look at the stats: Thompson is 14th on the team in total giveaways, and the 2nd best (lowest) when you take ice time into consideration. (the only player who has less giveaways per 60 than Thompson is Greenway, and Thompson handles the puck a lot more). So yeah, when he does have a giveaway people are going to notice it and point it out, but he is one the best players on the team statistically at not giving the puck away, and my personal 'eye test' confirms that.
  9. I watched the game on and off last night. Saw most of it I guess. Without analyzing Dahlin's play all that much, he looked like he 'belonged' there but didn't stand out. I didn't see a supertar on the ice, but I did see a player who looked like he should at least share the ice with the other great players.
  10. This one snuck up on me....Galentines Day? WTH? I heard of it before, I guess its been around for a few years, but all of a sudden this year I'm getting hit over the head with hit. Valentines day is tomorrow. Nothing major with us but my wife and I go out to dinner, but because of work she can't tommorrow, so we are going Saturday. I KNOW in the past I could make reservations the day before (Everyone goes out on Valentines day, not the day after?). Not this year! We got a reservation, but our first restaraunt didn't have anything available due to a 'galentines day' event they were having. Then there is a close family member who is in her late 20's. Not only are here and her fiancee not going out for Valentines day,she is basically kicking him out for the weekend (he is reluctantly ok with it) so she can have some 'girlfirends' over to stay overnight for the weekend, watch movies like the 'legally blond' series and drink wine and drinks the whole weekend. I have seen baloons at stores for 'galentines day', and just thir morning, on a major news website, there was an article written by a woman saying "don't celebrate valentines day, celebrate galentines day instead'. Really?
  11. That is the key. I know there are workarounds, but a few years ago I looked into some streaming things and I know you were allowed to stream them on your phone or tablet but not to your TV. If you tried to 'cast' them, they did their best to block it. There was a workaround for it but then they closed that loophole. Then people got it to work again but the quality was awful. Basically you COULD get it on your TV if you really wanted, but they made it really, really hard. There was also something (Formula one maybe?) where they had an idea about 5 years ago that didn't happen...but it was something like this: A low monthly fee for access to the app with all the stats, tracking, everything they offer, and you could watch ANY event at midnight the following date (a slight delay from live). Then they had an option that you could pay a small additional fee ($2 or $3) per event you want to watch live. They probably scrapped the idea figuring they could 'force' people to spend more to buy more up front.
  12. What would the cap of these teams be? From Capwages.com:
  13. Agree 100%. I think he is good enough and should be on the roster, but it was his production near the time of the team being selected. Also, best thing for a player like him is to get the time off. He's had like 5 or 6 injuries in the past 2 seasons.
  14. Ideally, one of their first round prospects would play the type of game Greenway does....so if/when greenway gets injured, you have the young guy gradually have a chance to get integrated into the team when needed. Alas, the Sabres don't have any top prospects in Roch that are in the 6'5" tall, somewhat physical type game.
  15. I guess I agree in principle. The way I look at it with guys that get injured a lot (Greenway, Samuelsson) is...lets say they give you 60-70% of the games in season. Those 30-40% of the games that they don't play, you are putting in a bottom-of-the-roster player to replace them. What if you got a guy that historically gives you 90%+ of the games? Even if he is a little worse, the 'average' of a Greenway giving you 70% of the games with a much worse player giving you 30%....that might be worse than a guy slightly worse than greenway, but MUCH better than the replacment player, giving you 90+%
  16. I think there is an arrogance, not only among the NHL but among many content providers....that the viewers "will find us". The owners look at their product and think they are going to maximize revenue and if someone is fan..the fan will find them. What they don't get is looking at it from the fans point of view. Cable. TNT, ESPN. Streaming on ESPN+, sometimes Hulu. Network TV on the weekends (they still do that). Then add in the things we all deal with that don't have anyting to do with the NHL, we deal with other Cable networks, Netflix, Max, Peacock, and others. We may have subscriptons to other entertainment products that dont' even have to do with watching content. For many consumers, this is all WAY TOO MUCH. So what happens when we have too much in our lives to deal with? We focus on the top 2-3, maybe 4 things, and we forget about the rest. Is the NHL at the top of that list for most viewers? No way. I know Nascar isn't a big following for many fans, but they have been making the same mistakes. In the past, there was one, maybe 2 networks you could watch every race on, and most races started in the early afternoon.. The ratings have been going down for years, for a lot of reasons, but you want to watch Nascar this year? Well depending on the race of the year you may have to watch The CW....or Fox...or FS1....TNT...oh, now Amazon prime for some races....and even Max. REALLY? I LIKE nascar and I'm watching a lot less just because I don't want to figure all that out. If you are the NFL, you can probably push people to 'jump through a few hoops' to view your product. Even they are getting some pushback. The NHL? They need to make their product as EASY to find and view as possible. They aren't doing that.
  17. I do not want to believe all of what you said...and I do not think it is 100% true. But I think its probably a much greater than 0% chance its true (maybe in the 30-60% range). And that is troubling enough. But hey, we might get hit by that asteroid in a few years so for many of is the fate of the team won't matter!
  18. I voted for the first choice, they are my team. Every year I start out that way. When the team end up with a huge losing streak or falls out of the race...I temporarily fall down to catetory 2 (they are frustrating), but then usually a week or two later I accept the yearly fate and I'm back up to #1, accepting they will not make the playoffs but watching the games for nightly entertainment only.
  19. I would think people that use the streaming apps....it would be easier to track them without having to use traditional methods. For example, If I am watching a Sabres game on MSG but doing so with the spectrum app....that should be a lot easier (if not automatic) to track just who is watching, how many pepole, for how long. But as you said, I'm not sure if those numbers are even being used when talking about 'tradional ratings'. I would think those numbers they would want to keep private and only use them in negotations with advertisers.
  20. I think this speaks to a bigger issue....just how available are the games? A lot of the NHL owners are older, they have existing business partners and they are used to working with them. They want to keep on making money the same way, the way they know how, and that is mostly through traditional media deals. I read a survey once a couple years ago that I cannot find, but I'll reference what I read in it and say my anecdotal beleifs align with it: Younger audiences are less likely to pay to view an event or to pay for a TV package for an event, but they spend a greater percentage of their money on jerseys, food and drink when they do go to games, gambling...etc. So they key to making money off of younger audience is to KEEP THEM ENGAGED (give them your product really cheap or free to watch) and you'll make up the money from them on the other things. Put a moat around your product and make them pay a toll to be exposed to it, and you are likely to lose them entirely. In my personal family and group of friends, EVERY SINGLE person I know over 50 has a traditional cable TV package and very few of them have any streaming service (we tried to get my parents and inlaws to try Netflix and Hulu over the last few years, they watched a bit of it but then gave up and they go back to their old fashioned cable tv where they have the old fashioned cable box hooked up to their TV). On the other hand, almost everyone I know under 40 does not subscribe to cable TV at all (daughter and her fiancee, 2 nieces, 2 nephews). They are 100% streaming only and none of them watch the Sabres at all. My nephew, who is in his early 20s, was a huge fan of them, but since he moved out and got his own place....now nothing with him regarding the NHL. I talked to him over the holidays and he says he 'kinda' misses the Sabres, but he almost laughed at the prospect of getting a Cable TV package just to get MSG to watch the games. Its not even an option he would consider. It happend with me with Baseball. I grew up in Buffalo and as a little kid (well under 10 years old) I could watch the Blue Jays on local TV (CFTO or CTV? I forgot which one). But they they started going cable only. living at home with my parents, I picked up on watching the Braves (TBS) and Yankees, but lost track of the Blue Jays and totally stopped going to games in Toronto. Now with us having a limited cable package, I don't watch much baseball at all. I went from as a Kid watching evey baseball game I could, buying trading cards and sticker books, asking for a jersey for my birthday, playing ever MLB video game I could find, and begging to go to games in person in Toronto....to now being a person that hasn't watched a full 9 inning game in years and hasn't spent $1 on MLB in...maybe a decade? on MLB. And it started with how available the games were to watch on TV. Personally I hate gambling. I never gamble, I strongly dislike the ads for gambling, and I look down on it. HOWEVER, if the NHL made most of their games available for free....if they had a game free on streaming every single night, I would bet (no pun intended) that they could make a LOT of money on 18-35 year old guy hanging out with their friends at bars placing bets on NHL gams if they can watch them/check in on them live for free. The NFL is above all the other sports, but how did it get that way? You almost always knew when you could find a game on TV, and there were always games, especially the home team, that were on for free. Other leagues may not replicate the success of that, but that is where they should start with their product. The NHL owners don't want to give up those traditional sources of revenue though networks, but by doing so, they are losing some of the younger fan base. Yeah, there are a lot of younger fans when you watch games in cities like Boston and Columbus and Dallas in the stands, but they could have SO many more if they made their games more available. Its the old "The owners could get $10 now and $10 in the future, or they could take $5 now and a LOT more than $10 in the future...and they are electing for the $10 now over the prospect of more in the future"
  21. Spectrum here, but not traditional cable. We dont' have a box, we use the app on our TV's and everything is done over wifi. That also allows us to have the really cheap (cheaper) package where we just get the basics and get to select 10 other channels (MSG, ESPN and TNG being among the choices). Not sure if you consider that 'cable' or not.
  22. He's a good player, not great of course but good when he is playing. My issue is, does how good he is justify how much he is injured? It looks like there have been almost 20 different occasions in the past 4 seasons where he has missed time due to an injury: https://www.flashscore.com/player/greenway-jordan/EeTUHE6b/injury-history/ Getting injured happens. missing an average of 5-7 games per year due to injury is unfortunate, but when you have as many different injuries and miss as much time as he does, that is where it crosses the line to me to injury prone. Do you sign Greenway and pencil him in for a middle 6 role? Or would you rather have someone who (if you can find them) is a LITTLE bit less effective than Greenway but someone you think you can rely on for a lot more games? If you pick the 2nd, then you are likely making a decision to move on from Greenway. I was wrong about one thing, when Ruff came in, I thought Greenway would be one of the guys on the way out. I was wrong about that, not its just his injuries.
  23. What days and times are the games on? Give me a routine, if you have games on 3 days of the week and they always start at a certain time, then I will know where to go for them. Now, if they have a set schedule already, I don't know what it is so hammer that home to viewers (after coming in from every break or in intermissions, remind viewers something like "Remember, you can watch the NHL on TNT EVERY (Tuesday, Thursday, whatever) and (7pm, 8pm, whatever). For years, I knew/know I can watch the NFL Sunday at 1pm. I know Sunday night baseball on ESPN. Let me know, without fail, the days and times I can rely every week on seeing an NHL game. I like watching out of town NHL games. If not directly, I will have them on the TV anyway while I do other things around the house. But I'm not going to search them out. I either KNOW when they are on...I randomly stumble upon them before stumble on something else...or I miss them and don't watch.
  24. I know the reason why for no Russian team..the politics of it....but any tournament like this without Russia just seems lacking something major. Kaprizov (if he were available) is one I'd want to see in this tournament for sure, added to your list. And of course, Pastrnak, Necas, Draisaitl, Stutzle, Hischier, Roman Josi...and others. Having Russia in a tournament like this would make it so much more interesting. As for the rest of the world? I know a 'world' team doesn't really give the other players much to 'play' for as far as national pride...but how about a 'world' team where the uniforms are the same but they get to wear a crest or a log representing their home country?
  25. I am pretty excited for this tournament, but a bit upset with the week it is played on. A problem I have that maybe other don't....one of the few other sports I follow is Nascar. Not a HUGE fan, but I used to live in Daytona so I love watching everything leading up to the Daytona 500 this week. -The first game of the tournament is at the EXACT time as Daytona Poll Qualifying on Wed -USA vs Finland on Thursday is the exact time the Daytona Duel races occur -2 games on Saturday going pretty much up against the Daytona Xfinity and Arca season openers So yeah, probably not a big deal for most, but it kinda screws up my optimal viewing schedule (Not to even mention Valentines day weekend where my wife wants to spend some time with me, and possibly going to see a movie sometime this weekend also)
