Larkin is pretty well loved by all the Red Wing fans I know. I'm personally pretty impressed. We'll see if it maintains, but he holds up well in the NHL thus far. He's got some p!ss n vinegar in him, which I like to see. I've heard the Yzerman comparison a few times, but I kinda stay away from making those judgements early on...

Yep. Our superstars are retired or getting close, and are constantly injured (Lidstrom retired, Datsyuk's hurt more than he's not, Zetterberg has chronic back problems, Kronwall's getting up there). Our goalie situation isn't great. Currently Detroit is in a transitional period- the only reason we're barely hanging in our 24 year playoff streak is because the development system was set up so well. The new kids are mostly Blashill's Calder Cup winning (2013) Grand Rapids Griffins. They are talented, but growing pains/figuring out how to play at an NHL level has looked a bit... painful. Then there's Quincey getting stupid penalties and being a jerk. Oh well, he's out with an ankle injury for most the season. Hell, the new kids are fighting each other during practice (Pulkkinen and Smith reportedly, today). Keep in mind Blashill, the current coach, was/is pretty close to Babs, so he, like many other coaches now, is attempting to implement Bab style coaching. Babcock was stern, had that "lovable strict high school coach" thing going with his running around the arena before every game thing and respect for players. None of that Tortorella bombast or Roy insanity. As far as coaches go, he's good and fairly even keeled. I think it was time to move on though. I don't know about stagnant, but the glory years of his time were waning, time for someone new. I don't care what coach got Toronto, it's like squeezing water from a rock. If he can do it, my god, get that man a Jack Adams. Sorry for the homerism, I definitely suffer from it- Babs is still loved here, but damn do we enjoy watching his infamous stare when we beat Toronto in the JLA.

Snapped my leg playing hockey Tuesday night. That makes 3 injuries in the last three games I've played in that stupid league. Caught an edge 3 seconds into my first shift and my ankle went one way and I came down full weight on top of it. Waited an hour for the game to end so someone could take me to the hospital. Spiral fracture, right leg, fibula. No hockey for a year. No aerial arts for a year. I can't volunteer anymore. I went from 180 mph, feeling strong and finally physically capable to barely able to get around my goddamn apartment. I can't drive for 6-8 weeks. I'm in everyone's way now. They put me on percocet, which freaks me out. I'm trying not to take them but the stupid thing really hurts now. There are good things, lots of people coming out of the woodwork, well wishers, a bit more sleep I badly needed. My dad and mom are finding ways to split time and come up and help ferry my crippled ass around. I just feel so guilty.

That sounds amazing. I'd love to do that someday. Extra points for original newspaper clippings! Yeah, that's quite the story too. Thanks for posting! Our family friends knew all the men on Big Fitz. She stopped in Toledo quite often, and it was always kind of a "oh hey go look, the biggest freighter is in town again" according to my parents. I've been on a few freighters, none that size of course, and it's just mind bending what happened to her.

Today is the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I had a massive fascination with shipwrecks as a little kid. Had family friends who were on the Ford, a ship that searched for it. My mum had spent some time on the Ford as well. It's interesting that every year I notice November 10th for that reason, and every year it has rained/been gross weather that day. The beer and the song are pretty good, too. http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2015/11/09/edmund-fitzgerald-wreck-gordon-lightfoot-witch-of-november/75453176/

I have a Dallas Stars mooterus jersey (unnamed) for pond hockey because the design is so god awful hilarious. Fun to wear the mooterus as the only girl on the ice. I've decided it will be my Ugly Sweater for ugly sweater christmas parties. It's even got red and green on it!

Also known as a "dirty thunderstorm" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_thunderstorm And here's our good friend Eyjafjallajökull when it erupted a couple years ago- epic metal cover type stuff.

I had coffee a few weeks back with my first longterm boyfriend. It was nice- kinda assuaged all those squirmy bad memories you have about a failed relationship. Also reminded me (though I didn't need the reminder) how glad I am that particular relationship didn't continue. Positives positives positives. Glad to hear it. I've been feeling myself lapse back into lurker territory here again. Not that I was ever a controversial firebrand or particularly useful in any hockey discussion, mostly contributing to OT. Maybe that's ok. I like the community, glad that this thread can kind of give everyone that little assurance of humanity :)

Bump- Driving back to Toledo tonight or tomorrow (thanks wind) to see how a friend is holding up. Means I get to listen to the Red Wings v Toronto game as I drive, or watch it if I stay, either way, as a Detroit fan, it's pretty amusing to watch Babs behind the other bench. A former student of mine has requested to do an Independent Study with me. It might be tough, as technically adjunct professors cannot run one, but the heads of my dept. are trying to find a loophole. I guess a bunch of my former students have talked about starting a petition to ask RIT to make me full time and teach more classes. Super heart warming. I'm making a difference! I'm actually beginning to seriously consider getting a Masters and teaching more instead. And it's absolutely vindicating to hear that my coworker is absolutely hated by his students (he took an empty teaching slot as well). He bragged to me about making one of them cry today. Makes me pretty sad- half his students were kids of mine who took the class thinking a different person was teaching it. They're miserable, and there's nothing I can do but keep my mouth shut and listen. Hope y'alls weekends/Friday look lovely!

A little bit of Ron Perlman I think. But less gorilla like/much kinder looking.

Are Athletes Really Getting Faster and Stronger?

Oh man I love this stuff. It's what makes conversations/arguments about "would the great players of the past be great today" so much fun. So many factors, and raw talent. -
Having a gothy best friend is great this time of year. I had no idea what to do and she says, hey, I have horns, wanna borrow them? So I found some prosthetic ears, and I've got some realistic looking fangs, aaand I guess I'll pop on a corset, bunch of belts, skirt and boots and be a forest witch demon faun thing. Ears and horns sans any faun makeup. And I realize the scarf makes it very Mr. Tumnus from Lion Witch and Wardrobe. Alternative costume? Next year I am totally getting those black out sclera contacts that turn your whole eyeball black. Doesn't matter what I am, those'll make it cool. Didn't think trying those 2 weeks after Lasik was a smart idea...

I have a student who point blank said to me, when it came up that I enjoy metal and have been to concerts, "I doubt it, you don't look like the kind of person who would listen to anything good. You're a jock girl". He then went on to tell me that he hopes it was a phase because "if you have children, wouldn't that embarrass them a lot? Women shouldn't be involved in things like that" Then proceeded to attempt to quiz me on bands and knowledge while I did my best to ignore him. Eventually I kindly but firmly informed him that being an elitist douchebag about anything does not win you points with humanity. Ok, not those words, but... Kid is such a pain in the ass. He's got problems, but it's his trump card to just be a dick. To give him credit, he usually realizes how awful whatever it is he said sounds, and tries to backpedal, and usually just creepily stares at me fan boy style, but oh man, so frustrating. Still sending me multiple, lengthy emails every week.

I'm just happy to have the colour guys actually calling the game. I'll throw on a Red Wings feed when I'm driving sometimes and it's just two bro heads discussing each other's ties and wives and life in general and oh, there's a goal! If I want to listen to a podcast about personalities and sometimes hockey, I'll sync up some MvsW. Call the damn game! -
I use one of d4rk's old sticks for a moonflower vine. We have sticks up on the walls, photos of goalies, diagrams of hockey gear patents, and various other hockey related things all over the apartment. Basically, our apartment is a man cave.

My first real introduction was from a themed figure drawing night I helped out with. We did a Lynch night, and models were dressed as various Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, and Blue Velvet characters. It was super odd and artsy, and a lot of fun. Kinda felt dumb not knowing all the injokes, gave it a watch.
-
And how. Mm. That's some damn good coffee, Diane. Love Twin Peaks. Now I need to get d4rk to watch it. Be some easy Halloween costumes. And yeah, I can't not see Ned and Cooper will always be the mayor of Portland (Portlandia) for me. Yes, I'm a horrible millennial and saw Portlandia before Twin Peaks.

Where IS Waldo? Probably with Carmen, in San Diego.

I always likened "handsome woman vs pretty woman" as the difference between Jordan and Daisy in the Great Gatsby. The way they're described in the books, the women who portray them in the movies... I always preferred Jordan, myself. But yeah, the time I got called that it wasn't meant so flattering... Guy was comparing to my two good friends at the time who were both models.. and twins. Yeah I wasn't ever gonna win that contest. Well that got derailed.. sorry!
-
Dude, if I could rock a beard like that I totally would. That's some quality facial fuzz. And yeah, handsome woman. That might be one of the oddest/most backhanded compliments I've actually received in real life. Guy who said it wasn't being nice, I don't think.
