  1. I think it depends. I appreciate it is heartbreaking, but I also think there is a time to be humble and pay respects to the winning team and also your country. The men didn't cry on the podium 4 years ago - and that is part of the problem. I think, although it is a double standard, having 20 women cry at the medal ceremony just seems quite 'weak' (for lack of a better word), like the women can't handle their emotions etc. Not to mention, the medal ceremony is not straight after the game. You have a few moments to collect yourself. How many minutes should a team of adults be allowed to sob before it becomes a bit self-indulgent. I also think there is the issue that the women were celebrating on the bench with a few mins to go. That is why it was so heartbreaking for them. They had written it up as a win for it to be snatched away. Their captain and coach should have focused them. They learnt a hard lesson about playing till the end. In this situation the women were crying but they didn't give it their all, the played a 55 minute game. So I think it also comes across as mixed messages - if the game meant that much to you don't celebrate until it is over.
  2. What would these clauses do? Some NHL teams would let their players go - probably one of the best ways to sign top talent. Team A is offering me $7.8 million and says I can go to the Olympics team B is offering me $8 million but says absolutely not. I wonder which they pick. All comes down to game theory in the end.
  3. Two people commented in paper about how it was a disgrace the women cried on the podium rather than celebrate their silver - calling it petulant and not the character of a true competitor. Someone thinks the letters are harsh, whilst JJ thinks they are great
  4. The criticism/worry of the US team was it went for grit over offense. They just got shutout in back to back games. Hard to defend that when people pointed it out before the Olympics. If I am a UFA I might sign a one year deal with the KHL so I can play in the Olympics... Maybe I like it. Maybe I extend my time there. Suddenly young players have a better chance of representing their country at the highest level if they stay in Europe
  5. Petulant Patrick Kane
  6. The contacts are insured. The issue isn't the money, it is the missing time
  7. Mentally weak. That is the USA. This is an embarrassing game for them.
  8. Yeah that last goal isnt. But as someone said - the first was a weak goal, the second he way over committed and Kesler made a few big saves for him too. The guy played 20 hours ago. He must be exhausted Truculence wins trophies. GODD must be disappointed. His ideal team has just been shown to be useless in the two most important games
  9. Burns was drafted primarily as an RW. It is the position he has developed for most of his life. (although he had played D a fair few times as well). If you haven't been raised playing a position at least infrequently i think you have little hope at the NHL level. All of Myers instincts would be wrong (waiting for someone to say "they are already always wrong" - they're not) and his positioning would be all over the place. As we have seen Myers real issue is his demons in his head. He is someone who needs confidence to play well. Moving positions would obliterate his confidence as he would be making mistake after mistake (as everyone does when they first start something). The NHL is not a place to learn. It is a place to develop. In short - no.
  10. Don't argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience
  11. Loved Vlasic's play to end the game. Toews had a great game defensively. Go Canada The British commentators were saying the game was not as entertaining as everyone expected after last olympics
  12. The grimace wasn't from taking cross checks in front of the net. It was the bright lights of the arena exacerbating his hangover
  13. So this is now in motion. Flights are booked (and rebooked due to my friend making a huge error about when his interviews are...) I will be in NA from 27th July - 27th August (sadly missing independence day). The route we are planning is (the days are a rough guide): Toronto (buddies gf lives here - personally i'd happily skip it) - 3 days Buffalo - 1 day Boston - 3 days New York - 4 days Philly - 2 days Washington - 3 days Asheville (via BPR) - 2 days Charlestown - 2 days Savannah - 2 days St Augustine - 1.5 days Orlando - 1 day Obviously this is quite a tight schedule and whilst distance isn't too bad (about 2500 miles) adding in smaller places (e.g. Gettysburg) makes it a squeeze. So if anyone has any tips about cutting time down/out of cities that would be great :)
  14. In my mind the Islander's first has been portrayed as a bleating lamb tied to a stake, and I see Sabres fans as staring from the bushes, saliva pouring from their sharp teeth. It amuses me to no end
  15. Me and the American guy in the lab were watching this on the computer, stopping our experiments every 30 seconds. It was intense. Fun to watch in a bizarre way. I really hoped Latvia got a lucky breakaway and held on for 2-1. Nolan has impressed quite a few people i'm sure. I wonder what he would be like with a good team? Is his ability to wring every ounce of talent from a team or only to make bad teams better? Interesting to find out. I joked with the American guy that I wonder if Nolan's experience of coaching a team that is always outgunned and outmatched for 40 games helped him come up with tactics etc. for this. Latvia should be proud with how they played (despite being dominated they showed guts and blocked a ton of shots). Also I love their jerseys
  16. Girgenson could have sealed the victory. Hit the crossbar on a 3 on 1 Empty net goal. 3-1 with 1min to go
  17. He looks a little confused and scared to me...
  18. I am supporting Miller, not the US. So I hope Quick gets light up like a christmas tree by Ovie and Miller sees the US to a gold
  19. 4 out of Quick's last 5 starts before the Olympics were below .900
  20. I really liked his analysis of games. Shame he is leaving. But he has had a great career, and has definitely earnt his time off
  21. My bad. For some reason I thought ROR had another year on his contract. Probably due to the shortened season confusing me
  22. Draft is before FA signing period
  23. Yes. I think the issue with Enroth is two-fold: His lack of height is not a disadvantage per-se but it is certainly not an advantage. It means he has less room for error when he drops down into the butterfly style. If Rinne goes down early there is still barely any room between his shoulder and the crossbar because he is 6'5' or something. Enroth is 7 inches shorter. When he drops down there is a noticeable gap. This means the shooting player doesn't have to get off as precise a shot. It is also something that other players will start to target the more he plays. They will come up with moves to make him drop and open up that gap. His rebound control, whilst significantly better over the last few years, still concerns me. He gives up very juicy rebounds in the slot. It is the main noticeable difference between Ryan and Jonas' games. I notice when Ryan gives a bad rebound because he so rarely does it. His rebound control is fantastic. This problem is far more fixable than number 1, but it again is something that will be targeted. These two problems combine to mean forwards have a good play if they shoot hard and low or high with a slower release. This isnt ideal.
  24. So much for two deadlines this year. I guess it should mean the real one isn't diluted
  25. Weber, McBain and Leino on the ice for the final minute. I think Teddy might just be the real tank commander.
