  1. But this is only one game. Our ladies' team net-minder, Jessie Vetter set an NCAA record for shut outs! :) From Wikipedia; In her four-year NCAA career, Vetter won an NCAA record 91 games (since broken by Hillary Pattenden[3]) during her four-year career and posted a NCAA-record 39 career shutouts So she's the SHUT OUT QUEEN! Maybe Miller should watch her play and take some notes? P.S. I am still waiting on that near-mythical Ryan Miller shut-out performance, but so far I'm shut-out.
  2. Miller's best stat is his SVG%, which puts him at number 10 slot in the league. But sorting the list of goalies by SVG%, there have been a total of 24 shut-outs delivered by those top ten goalies so far this season. Or 2.4 per top ten goalie sorted by Miller's best stat. The only other goalie who does not have a shut out so far in that same top-ten list is Carolina's Khudobin. But he's only played half the games that Miller has this season. Sorted by GAA, where Miller plummets to 28th in the league, well then the top ten goalies have 31 total shutouts. As PASabreFan mentioned, it may be indicative of a lack of focus or concentration on Miller's part. But SOs and top shelf goal-tending seem to correlate. And he USED to achieve shutouts - just not in the last couple years. Might be a sign of age too?
  3. 8.8 Lunar Distances, if that was the closest approach, is still a significant distance and nothing to lose sleep over for certain. That's over 2.1 million miles.distant. To put it in perspective, if the Earth is a globe 1 foot in diameter, then the asteroid was 265 ft away, or almost the length of a football field. The concern would be future passes of the same asteroid, which might be closer.
  4. Ok, so we've got Sweden vs Slovenia and Russia vs Finland in the quarters. The important game for the US is coming up at 12 pm, to see whom we play tomorrow. I'd probably end up with a game misconduct too to end my exceedingly brief NHL career. Still, the USA Women's Team impressed the heck out of me yesterday. I thought it would be like watching Women's pro basketball, which I avoid at any and all costs, but it was a very pleasant surprise.
  5. Didn't realize it had been a year already since the Chelyabinsk asteroid exploded in the skies over Russia. Time goes by too fast.
  6. The American women's hockey team is impressive - I watched the 3rd period of their game against Sweden tonight. They skate and pass better than the Sabres do, and they are focused on getting the puck down into the other team's zone. I'll bet their D could knock even Ville Leino himself off the puck
  7. Thanks for the information - That's funny about CW - because my friend has the premium HD package with DirectTV, and he claims it wasn't on at all on 14. I wonder if it depends on the geographic location as to what is on 14? We live in the Southern Tier. SD would be better than nothing, but it's ridiculous that Channel 13 didn't carry it ON 13! That way everyone could have watched it, in HD, and there would have been no issues for anyone.
  8. No, I probably would have commented "It's about time" or "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut, now and then" :)
  9. Yeah, we have a much better representative sample size for Miller's dearth of shut outs. :) I took a great deal of math in college, including two statistics courses, so I am very well versed in mean, standard deviation, statistical distributions, etc. Maybe I'm being too harsh because I was ticked off that yesterday's SU game got postponed to 7 pm, and the idiot-savant programming manager at Channel 13 in Rochester elected not to carry it,but bumped it to their B-channel, WHAM-CW or whatever, a station I don't get on DISH. I'm still seething mad about that one! Allegedly, DIRECT TV viewers could watch it, but I have a friend down the street with DIRECT, I was going to go there to watch and he checked channel 14, and he couldn't get it either. :(
  10. I know it's not going to happen - just chalk it up to a lot of other wishes.
  11. Well, there have been many Miller defenders who have pointed out over the last year that I was "off base" in pointing out his lack of shutouts in nearly 2 years. Let's see... the usual excuses that I've been countered with are.... Well, he's got a poor line in front of him He's faced a lot of shots He faced high quality teams The "NO" buzzer sounds loudly in front of all these traditional excuses. I think his inability to deliver a shut-out in all of these games is an important metric - it indicates either a lack of focus, attitude, hunger, desire, an erosion of ability or some mix of the aforementioned.
  12. Well, actually I had been time shifting the game - I started watching about 8 AM. I was fast forwarding thru period breaks, and when the whistle is blown.. When I do that, I don't read the forum or post here, to avoid spoilers. I didn't actually get caught up to "Live" until about 2 or 3 minutes left in the game. Or else I would have posted sooner. BTW, Kessel - he's American - T Pegs should open the wallet and get him away from the Canadians and back to playing in America.
  13. It just shows that Miller has gone downhill in the last few seasons. Slovenia wasn't exactly a powerhouse team, and no one can reasonably proffer the excuse that he didn't have a good line in front of him, or that he was facing so many shots - only 18
  14. I almost thought Miller was going to get a shut-out this morning. it was against a sub-par Slovenian team, but it would have been his first shutout since March of 2012. Nope, he couldn't do it - not even with only 18 shots on goal. Pretty much confirms my opinion that Miller has gone substantially downhill.
  15. Wow, Miller couldn't even manage a shutout in a game against a substandard team with only 18 shots on goal. It's been nearly two years since Miller has achieved a shutout.
  16. Yes, they'll probably play Miller in the preliminary games because they'd want Quick to be sharp for the crucial games - I just can't see him (Miller) playing in one of the "One and Done" medal games, especially as well as Quick has played. GAA of 1.5 after two games.
  17. Quick had another solid game today. Magic 8 Ball predicts more bench time in the future for Ryan Miller.
  18. My reaction to seeing him come out on the ice is similar to William Shatner's at the 30 second mark. "HE'S OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
  19. Well, breaking news from WGR - Jonathan Quick is starting in the next game against Russia. No real surprise to anyone with common sense - would any reasonable coach bench a goalie with a GAA of 1.0 in his first game for an older goalie who'd been a bit shaky in the last couple weeks of the season prior to the Olympics?
  20. LOL - I doubt he could be much worse than Leino.
  21. I think that's the only logical conclusion. The coach prefers Quick as starter over Miller. And If Quick is solid, there would be no reason to bench him in lieu of Miller. It's all about winning, not about giving someone ice time as a 'feel good' thing.
  22. Text just came in from WGR - Jonathan Quick is the starting goalie - Miller is benched. Smart decision - Quick is 6 years younger and in his prime, and playing better.
  23. Voted for Canada - Spooner - 5'10" and 176 lbs! That's a warrior woman right there! Steckline is 2" taller, but weighs less, so isn't as strong.
  24. Ordinarily, I'd be like "Say what???" with Ruhwedel sent down... but he can continue playing during this 2 1/2 week NHL drought, He could be back in Buffalo quickly enough once the season resumes.
  25. I'd love to get one of these... but would prefer not to pay the gougers. What was the original price?
