^^^amazing coincidence

Jonathan Toews just handily beat Miller in a breakaway to win Game 5 for Chicago in OT. Chicago has now come back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the series. Can St. Louis actually lose a series they lead 2-0? Statistically, a team that's won the game one in multiple overtimes always wins the series. If the Blues lose, it will be the first time in NHL history that's happened. Sabres prospects of improving are tied to the success of St. Louis. Is our Buffalo sports curse extending now to St. Louis, since it would hurt a Buffalo team if St Louis loses?

What I meant is that, in those two Stanley Cup runs, Patrick Kane was scoring all those goals and points against the best teams in the NHL - the lower-echelon teams/defenses are already weeded out by the playoff process. Whereas with regular season points like Hodgson's, there are points scored against good teams, and some not very good teams. It's a mixed bag. Guys like Kane are a whole order of magnitude better than the current best players on the Sabres. We need a couple Kanes on our roster to make us competitive again.

Well, let's look at it this way 2010 and 2013 - do the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup without Patrick Kane on the roster? I'm going to vote NO! Look at his post-season stats from both those seasons - 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 total post-season points in those two seasons. I don't know he's the best player in the world - but he's easily Top 5. He's a great player - when he's on his game, he's amazing to watch. Just for comparison - the Sabres top point scorer for 2014 was Hodgson - with 44 points in 72 games. Kane scored more points in 2 Stanley Cup runs, playing against the best defenses in the NHL, than the Sabres best points scorer in an entire season, playing a bunch of games against bottom shelf defenses!!!

Kane has rebounded nicely from a disappointing Olympics. He was pretty flat for a while AFTER the Olympics too. What I like about Kane - he's always thinking about getting that puck down the ice and into the other team's zone and into the net. Most of the time, as soon as he has the puck, he starts moving down the ice. He has fantastic puck control and puck handling. How many Sabres players pass the puck away as soon as they get it like it's a hot potato or zig zag back and forth in their own zone for a protracted time, or even worse in my book go back towards the Buffalo zone? Kane seems to pass when it makes sense to do so and moves forward most of the time! Man, this playoff puts me in a tough spot. Last year I was rooting for Chicago in the playoffs, because the Blackhawks are a quality team and quality organization. I love watching them play, and I thought they were the only ones who could beat the Bruins. Now I have to root for the Blues.

The question of a "Miller Sweep" becomes academic now. The big question now - the Blues somehow going to choke away the series after starting with a 2-0 lead? And out of 21 goalies with stats for the post season at ESPN, Miller is 10th in GAA, and 11th in SVG% He's definitely posting better stats in the post-season than he did in the last 5 games of the regular season. Let's hope he can keep it up and the Blues outscore the Blackhawks. He's also faced the 4th most shots against of any goalie so far in the post season, so he's busy out there - more like back in his Buffalo days - average is 32 shots against in the first 4 games. Number 1 in that last stat however is Miller's direct competition in the series - Corey Crawford - Blues have put 150 shots against him that he's faced, or 37.5 shots against average per game which is a ton of shots

The negativity in the sports media here shouldn't be that surprising. There hasn't been a whole heckuva lot to be optimistic about in the last decade in terms of Buffalo teams, IMHO. The Bills haven't even appeared in a playoff game in this CENTURY, for pity's sake. And the Sabres have been in a downward spiral for a number of years - and the Sabres this year posted one of the worst records, and worst stats, in the modern hockey era. Not exactly "jump for joy and click your heels together" stuff. Buffalo is a perfect environment for Eeyore types. -
So we already know the definition of the notorious Miller Shut-Out. Chicago won the 3rd game in the series, spoiling the possibility of a conventional sweep. But if the Blues go on to win this series 4-1, will that be known as a Miller Sweep? What would the "broom" look like?

The one positive aspect about Leino - his embarrassing, laughing-stock, epic failure in Buffalo probably helped get Darcy Regier out of here. For that I guess we should be grateful

Yes, like night and day after the end of the 1st period. Someone must have used my Sgt Hartman pep talk on him - he did start @#$%ing Tiffany cufflinks for the rest of the game. Go St. Louis - we need that draft pick!
-
Ryan Miller's stats for the 1st are ugly - only 7 shots against goal, and he let 3 of 7 in - SVG% of 0.571. Ouch The coach needs to read him the riot act in the locker room, ala Gunnery Sgt Hartman - "Miller, you had best square your ass away and start shitting me Tiffany cufflinks or I will definitely ###### you up!"
-
Miller gave up THREE goals in one period? Ouch!

For practical purposes, the end result next season will likely look very much like a Tank, even though the Tank isn't intentional. I'm reminded of Shakespeare - "A rose by any other name....."

What career? I couldn't have scored fewer goals than Leino did this year. lol -
Good point. I did watch them play against the Blues in the game where they clinched the playoff berth - they were ferocious and on fire in that game.

I think there's room for Weber on the team - maybe just not a number one defenseman. One stat I never saw mentioned - Blocked shots - Weber was 12th best in the league in this stat with 161 blocked shots. And that's with playing only 68 games. Most of the top ten in this stat were playing 75 games or more. If we averaged the shots blocked per game for players who played more than 50 games, I bet Weber is in the top 5. The problem is, the team was so poor, it was just allowing the other team far too many scoring opportunities.

Yep, and that's why the reporter who asked the question comically phrased the question the way he did. No one, not even GMTM, seemed to disagree with it. LOL Sounds like it's pretty much a done-deal unless something extraordinary happens to change it (Battista telling GMTM - "You know, I really like that Leino kid there- he's got moxie!" ) -
Well, I'm not buying into the idea that the team is better under Ruff than the previous coach. A 0.3 point increase over the average of the past 3 full seasons isn't statistically significant. The qualifying points for playoff berth was lower this season. In checking the standings at ESPN, I believe In 2010, it was 95, 2011, 97, and in 2012 95. If the competition hadn't softened, the Stars may very well have been cleaning out their lockers on Monday too. One area the Stars did shine - they won every game against teams where Ryan Miller was in the crease. I was starting to wonder if Ruff knows Miller so well he knows how to coach his offense to beat him?

I watched that segment, and I *think* Tim Murray's mention of 50/50 was in reference to using the SECOND buyout, not the first. -
I don't know that a lot can be said, plus or minus, for Lindy Ruff's tenure as the Stars HC at this early stage. The Stars really haven't showed any tremendous improvement this year, points wise, over the previous 3 full 82 game seasons. They finished this season with 91 points. But here's the breakout (ignoring the short 2013 season) 2010 - 88 points 2011 - 95 points 2012 - 89 points That averages 90.7 points So the Stars this season, with 91 points, are only 0.3 points above their 3 year average. Seems like just luck of the draw they made it in this year, frankly. They had 4 more points in 2011 than this season, and didn't qualify. Now, in average points earned per game, in 2013 - the 48 game season - the Stars earned only 1.0 points per game This year, 91 points/82 games = 1.1 points earned per game, a modest improvement. But I don't know that it's fair to compare a 48 game season head to head to an 82 game season.

Didn't "The Bob Newhart Show" open with "H-hello?..." -
From the press conference, he clearly preferred winning the lottery outright - but the next best possibility would be the Islanders winning. We lost on both chances They used to call Buffalo the Queen City - now for my money it's the Curse City. For anyone who disagrees, my reply is "Wide Right?"
