GAME DISCUSSION THREAD GDT: Buffalo vs Ottawa (4/5/2013, 7:05pm)

I agree - he's really improved. I think it helped him having his real-life good friend, Steve Ott, on the team too. Yeah, I hope they finish the season strong. The draft position is a matter of nearly supernatural indifference to me. I want to see a Sabres team NOW that plays hard, and is worthy of respecting. We've seen that in the last couple weeks. -

Actually, I kind of like them. Management has clearly written off this season - well, they're like "Eff you, management!" I like seeing them playing for pride, lately, if nothing else. -

Yeah, Kaleta took one right in the face in front of the Ottawa goal, just before he was wrestled to the ice. -

Kaleta took a stick to the face - guess that's ok, no need for a penalty on Ottawa. -

I didn't see it - missed about 10 minutes of the first period. Was it a softie? -
Currently at -11, I'm not sure the same argument could be made for Stafford. LOL

They were discussing this on WGR - maybe Regier puts the price too high? Therefore the number of deals is fewer. This is a team that needs to be scrapped and rebuilt, and that's not going to happen waiting around to scrape up every possible nickel of value in a trade. It's like the guy hangs his hat, and his record as GM, on one or two BIG trades...so everyone can oooohh and ahhh, and tell him how awesome he is. In the meantime he has a bottom-shelf team that's one of the worst in the league, a team he built, and a lot of moves need to be made but don't get made, Maybe another, better GM would have made several trades? Maybe not for top-dollar, but would be more beneficial to the team and the product on the ice? I would say cutting Staphford was a higher priority than PomPomstein - both should go, but Stafford is clearly worse than Pominville. And from his presser today, even Regier hinted that there were other players he wanted to trade first, but didn't get what he wanted to do. Again, penny wise and pound foolish is our 17 year Cicada Regier.

Whoops, replied before I scrolled all the way down - you beat me to it! :) Yeah, he should be wearing a Sarah Palin t-shirt under that sport jacket emblazoned with a "Drill, baby, drill!!!" slogan.

Better yet, why don't they have their own coffee makers at the office? A Keurig with Green Mountain pods, or a commercial grade Bunn? What kind of office doesn't have coffee there?
-
That's an interesting point - however, he was far more open and public prior to this year. Something seems to have changed with his attitude towards both press and public. If he's developing a bunker mentality towards his unswerving support of Regier, that could spell long term trouble for the team.
-
Did anyone notice the irony? The mighty Blackhawk's point streak was similarly ended by the lowly Colorado Avalanche - one of the few teams in the NHL with a worse W-L record than Buffalo. So in both cases, streaks were ended by the bottom-feeding teams. Probably just points to the law of averages kicking in more than anything else.
-
That could have been said of almost anyone on the ice. The best thing that can be said - he didn't HURT the team - one would hope for better from a supposed 'star' offensive player.
-
Well, the fact that Pegula has gone into hibernation since the start of the season - points to a serious siege-mentality developing with him, where he's circling the mental wagons and apparently refusing to discuss his Regier-love with anyone - sports writers or hockey fans. Both the majority of fans AND the majority of sports writers/analysts are correct though - Regier needs to go if the franchise has any hope of being successful
-
Yep - game outcome might have been completely different with Fleury in the net for the entire game. He was on ice for 37 minutes out of 60, and gave up ZERO goals with 16 saves. That's coming in cold from the bench, too! Vokoun, OTOH, only had 13 total shots against him in 23 minutes, and he let 4 of those in for goals.
-
Checking the box score at ESPN just now - Staphford was one of the few players to come away with a ZERO on plus/minus. 13 Sabres were +1 or better. Hard to believe a "star player" and "Assistant Captain" could accomplish nothing offensively in that game last night. He didn't even make a point last night, in a 4 goal game. He had 5 SOGs. Every one of his shots that I saw seemed dead-center on the goalie's chest - don't think that will work, ay, Drew?
-
Hopefully he IS Captain next year.... he's clearly a leader on the ice and off.
-
Hey, our Captain is being interviewed now.
-
Man, did Kaleta work hard in this game. Tip of the hat to Patty.
-
Yeah really, CALL THE POLICE. Something's happened to the Sabres!
