Game Discussion Thread GDT: Montreal @ Buffalo (4/11/2013, 7:30 PM)

I think it was ridiculous that Ryan Miller was played last night - the guy has faced more shots - 1140 - this season than any other goalie in the NHL - 80 more shots against than the Jets' Pavelec, but Pavelec has played two more games than Miller. At 36 games played, Miller is averaging 32 shots against per game - that is a DAMNING statistic against the defense of the Sabres - to let their goalie take a pounding like that, consistently, game after game. Rolston should be able to read the above statistics, and understand that he's working Ryan too hard, and needs to interject Enroth more..... especially since Jhonas has a very good GAA - almost as good as Miller's. Jhonas should have started that game last night - it's just embarrassing for Miller to get pulled that way mid-game, and then he doesn't get the rest he should because at facing 32 shots in 2 periods, he did more work in 2 periods than many goalies do in 3. And Myers had 25 minutes of ice time - and Stafford was essentially the Invisible Man with only 1 SOG all game. Brutal. -

Myers turned the puck over AND was totally out of position.....too far down the ice in the Habs zone.... to be anywhere near the puck to defend. I even called it to my friend before it happened. Myers should be sat. -
I've been discussing this when I watch the games with friends all season. Tuesday night we watched Myers fumble and bumble with the puck, and he wasn't even skating, and there wasn't a Jet within 10 ft of him. My friend and I were both like - "You gotta be kidding me!" Contrast the poor Sabres puck-handling with good teams and good players like the Blackhawks.... Patrick Kane - he is amazing with the puck - he can slalom at speed thru opposing players without a hitch, And his passes are bullet-quick and precise. The Blackhawks in general, or the Kings, etc etc "manage" the puck far far better than a team like the Sabres - and undoubtedly a big part of the reason for their success.

Well, at least the Sabres played hard - they just couldn't catch a break in scoring. Miller seemed a little tired.... and no wonder... he's taken more shots on goal than any other goalie in the NHL. With such withering pressure on the net, night after night, Rolston should be rotating Enroth in a little more often. -
Stafford hasn't had a point since March 28th, and his plus minus, which was already bad enough at -12 before the weekend, is now a terrible -16! I think he and Myers are having a contest to see who can have the worst plus minus this year. http://espn.go.com/n...7/drew-stafford And..... his productivity - almost 50 minutes of ice time between points - that is squalid! This guy has been a problem for years - but our idiot-savant GM, 17 Year Regier, is apparently planning long term for a cup run in 2048, so there's no hurry to get rid of this dead wood.

The only time I am critical of Ryan Miller is when I think he sandbags and doesn't play his best. However, when he does play to win, he's one of the best there is. And honestly, I've couched my criticism with the realization that it would be easy for a top-shelf player to get demoralized playing on that team, particularly as BADLY as they were playing in the weeks before Lindy Ruff was fired. -

I'm hoping for another elite Miller showing like Sunday night, and a Sabres win! I wouldn't give a hoot in hell about the effect on the draft pick position if they win, either in this game, or any of the remaining games. Let's go Buffalo!!!! -
I re-watched Ott's charge after the penalty, and the shoot-out. That was Ryan Miller at the top of his form.... that glove save FTW is/was just awesome!
-
That was great!!! Ryan Miller was really into the game tonight.... I love how he held on to that gloved shoot-out puck for a while - savoring it! He made a glove save during a shoot out earlier in the season - I remember being impressed as hell by that, and now another one. Not the prettiest win, but they fought hard and that's the kind of team I can support. Right before Ruff was fired, the Sabres were a LOT worse - they weren't even trying it seemed like. Team is slowly improving.
-
Those guys are great on D arent they?
-
Wow...brutal. looked like a well executed Devils PP. Myers .......ugh
-
Terrible turnover by Myers = Devils goal
-
Uhm, Aaron Maybin???????? The Bills draft choices over the last decade have been horrible. Again, you need quality talent selection personnel to use the draft picks that are available - and there's no real evidence that 17 Year Regier is up to the task at hand even given great draft picks.
-
Update - while his points remain unchanged - 5 goals and 8 assists for 13 - now after 36 games played (he is on the OFFENSE, right, not defense? Just checking) his plus/minus has fallen to -12. Another interesting stat - his Productivity is a DISMAL 75 minutes in games the Sabres won, but 38 minutes in games the Sabres lost. Guess the only time he can actually score goals or make an assist is when the other team has gone into the equivalent of the "Prevent Defense" ? It's a good thing Regier didn't do a "B" grade deal this week to get rid of him - the Sabres couldn't afford to lose this kind of firepower! That would be too much activity for Regier in one week, AND Regier always holds out for A+ deals, outrageously stacked in favor of the Sabres, instead of conceding more just to get rid of a player and try to actually improve the team. He's like the Passive-Aggressive hockey GM.
-
I could care less about draft picks - because old 17 Year Regier is doing the picking - you realize, at this stage, his finger prints will sadly be all over this team for at least a quarter of a century. Again, the draft is meaningless unless the right choices are made- Buffalo Bills have had great draft pick positions for years, and look where it's got them? I want Buffalo to win as many games as possible before the end of this very short season. Hoping for a big win tonight! :)
-
Since his season is apparently over, we can summarize his two years of performance as a Buffalo Sabre.... Leino only has 10 goals and 31 points. After 2 years in Buffalo, his plus/minus is stuck at -2. I'd say ESPN's characterization of "Major Bust" is an understatement. Can we get rid of him this summer somehow?
-
Lameo is our Carl Pavano. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Here's the ESPN spin.... "Leino has been a major bust since the Sabres signed him to a large six-year deal last offseason. He only had 25 points in 71 games in 2011-12, and can't stay healthy this season. The Sabres traded away a number of veteran pieces this week, but given Leino's high price and injury status we're pretty sure GM Darcy Regier didn't even try to throw his name out there"

He seemed to skate well - at least to my eyes. Nothing like "Chief Woodenlegs" of so many games this season. I was thinking it was an imposter. :)
