2. And Pat Burns was a cop from Gatineau. He coached a few years in the Q and then in the AHL before getting hired by the Montreal Canadiens. Lindy Ruff was never head coach of anything before getting the Buffalo gig. If you can coach, you can coach. Dudley as GM is an OK, maybe even a great idea. Ramsay is head coach isn't so much. He makes Ron Rolston seem like Mr. Eloquent. Ramsay is very low key as I recall. And Ron comes across a bit as someone with Asperger's Syndrome, especially his droning intonation. (Funny, Chad Cassidy is bit like that too.) Ramsay, Schoenfeld, and Dudley have all coached the Sabres before. Dudley had one good year in Buffalo with a much better team, but he still only lasted 2.25 seasons. All three of these guys have coached elsewhere with similar results.
3. This is/was a big French hit that's been playing in my mind recently. Si Maman Si, as sung by France Gall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsTSgncy9OI
4. Um. I just tried to post this too about Jacobs. A good signing for the Amerks to give him a try-out. It would be just wrong for the Sabres to sign the kid with such low potential right now; just look at Boychuk.
5. Amirite? No. According to Wikipedia: The term Amorites is used in the Bible to refer to certain highland mountaineers who inhabited the land of Canaan, described in Genesis 10:16 as descendants of Canaan, son of Ham. They are described as a powerful people of great stature "like the height of the cedars," (Amos 2:9) who had occupied the land east and west of the Jordan. The height and strength mentioned in Amos 2:9 has led some Christian scholars, including Orville J. Nave, who wrote the classic Nave's Topical Bible to refer to the Amorites as "giants."[7] The Amorite king, Og, was described as the last "of the remnant of the Rephaim" (Deut. 3:11). The terms Amorite and Canaanite seem to be used more or less interchangeably, Canaan being more general and Amorite a specific component among the Canaanites who inhabited the land. The Biblical Amorites seem to have originally occupied the region stretching from the heights west of the Dead Sea (Gen. 14:7) to Hebron (13:8; Deut. 3:8; 4:46-48), embracing "all Gilead and all Bashan" (Deut. 3:10), with the Jordan valley on the east of the river (4:49), the land of the "two kings of the Amorites," Sihon and Og (Deut. 31:4; Josh. 2:10; 9:10). Both Sihon and Og were independent kings. These Amorites seem to have been linked to the Jerusalem region, and the Jebusites may have been a subgroup of them. The southern slopes of the mountains of Judea are called the "mount of the Amorites" (Deut. 1:7, 19, 20). Five kings of the Amorites were first defeated with great slaughter by Joshua (10:10). Then more Amorite kings were defeated at the waters of Merom by Joshua (Josh. 11:8). It is mentioned that in the days of Samuel, there was peace between them and the Israelites (1 Sam. 7:14). The Gibeonites were said to be their descendants, being an offshoot of the Amorites that made a covenant with the Hebrews; when Saul would break that vow and kill some of the Gibeonites, God sent a famine to Israel.
6. This ain't the right thread, but the Americans just signed Colin Jacobs to a PTO. I was kinda wondering if that might happen. He's too much of a project right now for the Sabres to waste a contract on him, but maybe with some time, he could develop some still. HockeysFuture has him ranked only a 5D. That's even lower than Boychuk's 5.5D; and we all know how well Boychuk worked out (not even in AHL this year). This seems like a good decision, IMHO. Too bad that they can't play Rissmiller more. As for Canadiennes, that's only for an all female team. Do you think that the Canadiennes could beat the Sabres? I don't get this joke, by the way. The thread is entitled Canadiens, just as it should be, not Canadians. Or was it edited?
7.
I don't have cable TV nor the money to go to hockey games, but I listen to most of their games. From I can tell, the chief reason why they might seem to be doing betteris that other teams lost their best players to the NHL. Their is no doubt that Foligno & Hodgson, and now Porter & Flynn were very good players for the Americans. The other thing to consider is that they had many rookies and new faces, so it takes some time for them to come up to speed and gel.
8. I think that they've reached the point that the lack of talent has translated to a lack of effort. Outside of Miller, Vanek, Pominville, & Ehrhoff, they don't have much. Just look back to 2004. Pominville was forced to play another year in Rochester because they had in front of him: Briere, Drury, Satan, Afinogenov, Brown, Dumont in his prime, Kotalik in his prime, Derek Roy, Hecht in his prime, Mike Grier in his prime, and even a prospect bust in Bartovic who the Sabres felt deserved a try-out (who had 9 points in 23 games which would be great for the 2013 team.) Or consider the year that I started following the Sabres 1983-1984. Real Cloutier had 60 points, but Scotty Bowman got angry with him and stopped using him; he sent him packing at the end of the season. That's even after sending 3 guys (McKegney, J.F. Sauve, & Savard, and 3rd round pick) to Quebec for him (and a 1st rounder wasted(?) on Adam Chreighton.) Why? Because they had guys like Perreault, Andreychuk, Foligno, Housley, Ramsey, Ramsay, Sauve, and Barrasso. They had talent, so Bowman could afford to cut his perceived slackers.

Plan B

The Nordiques, definitely. But, not the Avalanche. I used to like the Flames when they had Lanny McDonald's flaming long mustache and a guy name Rejean in net....The Habs are a love/hate thing, but more love than hate....Memories of the way they were.
10.
To Quote Dick Cavett: Barbra Streisand played in a movie called "Funny Girl", andin a movie called, "Funny Lady". Today, she should be star in a movie called "Funny old Crock"....And, that seems to be the Sabres today, an old crock. Here's another funny Dick Cavett clip:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8m9vDRe8fw
11. Chara tries to decapitate Pacioretty - no suspension. Lucic steam-rolls Miller - no suspension. Cooke does a good job of trying to slice off Karlsson's foot - no suspension. Girardi gets a running start and slams Ennis into the boards face first - no suspension. BUT, Kaleta lightly *taps* Richards from behind and Richards falls awkwardly into the boards. - 5 game suspension. (I don't think that he is faking the pain. Maybe he pinched a nerve. Whatever.) The fact is that there is NO justice in the NHL. Shanahan needs to go. NOW. Pegula, take a page out of Melnyk's book and find a way to say something. Better yet, do something, like get Shanahan fired. NIL: National Idiotic League.
12. If anyone cares, I threw together a quick script and found 14 unique Last Name, First Name combinations for NHL players with all 5 vowels in their last name. Of those, I count 9 unique last names. Here are the 14 full names that I found, assuming no duplicates (that is two NHL players have the exact same name). Beaudoin Eric Beaudoin Serge Beaudoin Yves Bilodeau Gilles Boileau Marc Boileau Patrick Boileau Rene Corriveau Andre Corriveau Yvon Cousineau Marcel Lorieau Paul [Edit: Sorry, this guy was a regular singer of the National Anthems for Edmonton Oilers, not a player.] Ruotsalainen Reijo Tuomainen Marko Vanbiesbrouck John I knew of three of these players already. People are welcome to correct me, if they could care at all. I just found it a quick trivia diversion.
13. After reading the latest news, I want to know how many NHL players have had every vowel represented in their last name? This little bit of trivia was brought up about say, 1984, concerning a certain diminutive d-man who was playing for the NY Rangers at the time.
14. Detroit looks like a possible candidate. But, what can they trade back to us besides old spare parts and a few kids who they don't want to trade anyhow? Notice, Darcy opted not to pick Mursak on waivers the other day, even though he had better numbers playing along side Vanek in Austria. And Mursak can skate like the wind. Doesn't Rolston want a more up tempo game? Whatever. No, Chicago is my dark-horse hope on any Miller trade. Sure, Crawford and Emery have great stats, but they also have a great team in front of them. This is where you need to work their GM's psyche a little to convince them that Miller really is better than those two, especially in big-money games. You know, plant a seed into Scotty Bowman's ear, and watch it grow in Stan Bowman's mind. Kinda like how Muckler didn't think that Hasek was ready so he thought that he NEEDED Grant Fuhr. In this case, though, Chicago would be getting a better goalie and more in his prime. And Miller would be happy to get one big leap closer to his wife in LA. We could get back Emery or Crawford and a prime pick/prospect. Win-Win scenario. Remind them also about how Soup was good on our team, but really great on theirs. Quoting Wikipedia: "Campbell recorded the lone assist on Patrick Kane's overtime game winner over the Philadelphia Flyers as the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup on June 9, 2010."
15. People keep on saying trade Pominville. OK, but he's got a restricted "no trade" clause according to Capgeek. Also, if Colorado doesn't want to pay O'Reilly, why would they trade for a huge contract in Pominville? If Colorado were smart, they would have traded away Stastny's big contract last year and signed O'Reilly. And to those who say (including my own wishful dreaming), trade Myers for Ryan O'Reilly, well, didn't they just do a big trade a few years ago for an "up and coming defenceman" named Erik Johnson? How well did that sit with the Colorado fans? Hint, they didn't like the trade. Even Peter Stastny (hockey dad, Nordiques alum) was writing to the papers about how management screwed up by trading away Shattenkirk. They got Jay McClemment in return too. Yikes!! Talk about bad defensive centremen! It seems to me that Colorado's management is pretty bad right now. But they're not so bad as to take on another big contract or more problems. No. If we want to get ROR, I'm thinking that Leopold/Sekera + Armia is what it will take. And that would be worth it to me because we all know how hard it is to find good centres these days. Of course, we would need a guarantee that we could sign him to a good long-term contract. Finally, it would help if we knew that the Sabres would continue to tank it this year, even with ROR, so that we can get a top draft pick.
16. Ahh, it's OK to be honest. Tell us how you really feel about Miro. You don't have to hold back. :-)
17. OK. I take that one. 1982: Andreychuk, Housley, and Cyr. 1983: Barrasso, Lacombe, Creighton, Tucker, Puppa, Ruuttu, & Krupp Maybe they didn't go far into the playoffs, but they got some really talented guys there. Where would the Sabres have been without those guys? Perpetual cellar dwellers? Housley for Hawerchuk worked out OK. Muckler's Andreychuk and the world for Grant Fuhr was the start of a huge downfall that was only rescued by Hasek. Well, OK, we did recover from the Fuhr debacle by trading him for Zhitnik, who proved to be a steal for us. The Sabres could really use a Zhitnik these days. And a Miro Satanwould be nice on the right wing too.
18. While I agree that Regier is the problem, look back at the 2005-2007 drafts. Three years of drafts and what do we have to show for them? Weber, Regehr (via Butler, Byron, & $$$), Enroth, and Brennen. They were bad drafts because they traded away picks to "win now" and because they had cut back on scouting, often resorting to "video scouting" Add in their mediocrity since 2007, and you have a recipe for a downward spiral. The time is now for them to begin a rebuild. The problem with this is: 1. Pommer has a restricted trade clause that could make a trade very difficult. 2. Miller wants to end up on the West Coast, again making a trade difficult. Whom do you replace Miller with? For every team like the Senators who stumble upon overlooked gold in a Craig Anderson, you have a team like the Flyers who year after year overspend trying to find a good goalie. We would need to trade Pommer, Miller, and/or Vanek and get a premium goalie prospect, or two, in return as part of the package. 3. Vanek, if you trade him, then the Sabres have *nothing*. Then again, we all thought that Montreal and Ottawa had nothing, but they're doing alright. In short, they would need a lot of ready/near-ready prospects in return to start a rebuild.
19. My hunch is that one of the problems with the Sabres is exactly that they DID use Ruff as a talent advisor, and all around development advisor (like overseeing Rochester during the lock-out). Perhaps this is a sign that Regier and Ruff no longer saw eye to eye on things? Or even that Regier is in CYA mode and trying to distance himself from Ruff's input? Maybe Ruff even wanted Cody McCormick to stay in the line-up, and hisbeing at practice was a seen as a minor rebellion??? Just some of my musings and hunches.
20. Leopold + Armia = O'Reilly. Leopold played there before. Armia is an unproven talent, but a RW prospect that they might covet. OR: Myers = O'Reilly + Calvin Pickard(their top goalie prospect) + conditional pick. Make it happen. I don't care how; just make it happen. I'm really sick of hearing about how they have to coddle and use psychology on Tyler Myers. Get rid of the guys who don't want to play.
21. Max Pacioretty is quite the character. I was on his side when Chara tried to decapitate him. But, this biting incident is ridiculous. Max, get a clue. When you're trying gooning it up yourself by trying to rip someone's head off and your hand is over their mouth, don't be surprised to get some teeth marks. How pathetic! Millionaire brats.
22. Teams are scouting the Sabres...is there any way to trade the coach?
23. OK. I had posted that it was a good goal. But, I just saw something that no one else mentioned at about 55-56 seconds into the video clip of the Sabres' video feed that I found on You-know-what major website. I saw that Vanek used his stick to push Budaj's left knee/skate backwards into the net. It's when Rob Ray says, "All of a suddenThomas..." Then, Vanek was able to get to the lose puck to pool-cue it in. Did Vanek do it on purpose? I can't say, but it really looks like could have been so. Regardless his intent, that is interfering with the goalie. Ott - no interference Vanek - interference. Ergo: no goal.
24. Tyler Ennis and Nathan Gerbe are both very talented and both can skate exceptionally well. Ennis was a stand-out junior player who toyed with opposition. He won AHL rookie of the year. Nathan Gerbe was an offensive superstar in college. He won AHL rookie of the year....It's just hard for these kind of players in today's NHL where the big guys are BIG and most of the big guys can skate quite well too, especially with their longer strides. Add in the physical beating that they our small guys take (Gerbe with broken vertebra), it's just tough for them. There just isn't as much room to make fancy plays any more. You gotta wonder how guys like Denis Savard (small, awesome skater) and Gil Perreault (good size, awesome skater) would do in today's NHL. Would their numbers be as great? I think that with better d-men, the Sabres should try to find a way to get Ennis and Gerbe (and Vanek) on more long break-away type passes. By the way, the problem with the Sabres, IMHO, is exactly that Ruff is a good coach. He finds a way to turn things around, only for them to end up in 9th place.Replace Ruff with a bad temporary coach (Darcy??), let them stick up the joint, draft in the top 1-3 position, hire a new coach, and have patience.
