Supposedly they saved some art and stuff. And the Deputy Mayor said plans already starting about the rebuild.  Prayers to the firefighters.

Well, that's something, I suppose. Last I heard there were no known casualties; certainly hope it stays that way.

Yep.  Talking heads are going to taking head. Show me some real examples to back it up.

Marty Biron said AV only coach he hates. Everyone else has said he is more of a Marv Levy type delegator who leans on his veterans.

Nail in coffin would seem to be questions about his communication abilities since that seems to be a big thing with JBOT.

It's a moot point now with him going to Philly, but one thing I had thought about is his year away from the game. How many of the top end coaches actually take a year off after being fired? Boudreau, Trotz, Laviolette, Julien...all those guys were unemployed for like 3 microseconds. The Dan Bylsma's of the world are the ones who take time off because they're not actually that highly in demand.

Jeff Skinner and Justin Williams would not be a good combination.

Was there something in Carolina about them not getting along or something? I honestly don't remember anything, but if I can use this to say Skinner sucks, I'm prepared to do it!

Over the top character judgement. It’s what we do. Some people just don’t like him. That’s just the way it is.

Whole lot of stuff got deleted before I had a chance to elaborate in response to some (very fair) criticisms of my initial post. I have no clue how Tiger was as a father, but I do know he never talked about it until his career went otherwise off the rails following his self-inflicted marital problems. Suddenly his marriage is over and his career in shambles, and he's all about "oh sure it sucks but I have my kids so it's okay." Which may have been sincere, and personal challenges can have a way of making one re-evaluate priorities, but it always struck me as something constructed in a PR lab for image rehabilitation. Though I won't go as far as Inky, Tiger has always struck me as disingenuous in his public comments. I went too far in my comment, but the fawning over the redemption arc on the radio this morning made me want to vomit. I wanted playoff hockey talk, and got a whole bunch of Tiger fluff instead. Blah.

I swear I wasn't trolling, I was just bitching because I was annoyed. I am sorry to contributing to the thread going off the rails.

What'd Tiger do besides cheat on his wife? Feel like every athlete/millionaire does that

He was pretty much an absentee father during those years, too.

Anyway, my biggest problem with him is he makes people care about golf. I hate golf, and I honestly don't understand enjoying watching it on TV. And when Tiger is playing well, I hear about it way more over the course of a week than I ever want to the rest of my life combined.

Funny, I mentioned that the playoffs would be a war several weeks ago in the "fighting" thread and some people didn't seem to get it.

Regular season hockey has nothing whatsoever to do with playoff hockey; it's a different sport.

I was laughing on Saturday night watching a couple of games as I saw 4 players go off the ice with bloody faces in the span of an hour.  And not because they unluckily caught a high stick!  I'm talking getting crunched into the boards face first and stuff like that, and the blood was flowing.

I've been greatly enjoying this first round and each night continue to ask myself why I bother watching in the regular season.

Watching Pitt and TB collapse has been fantastic.

The Vegas/SJ series in particular is a real gem as well.

He likes his soft, Pittsburgh style hockey, so we're pretty much screwed until he is fired himself.  That comes next year I think.

What? They won 2 Cups in the last 3 years.

The overreaction right now really is something.

So what star is Tampa trading this Summer? Time to raid!!!!

I don't know, but if Stamkos had a different nationality he'd be getting skewered for his playoff performances.

Precisely. Life is stressful enough. Coaching is an area where there simply isn't enough data available to fans for us to actually know anything.

I'll continue to think it's a useless exercise to get worked up over candidates.

It's definitely a huge moment for the franchise but see above.

On the other hand, arguing with incomplete information is so American it may as well have been in the Declaration of Independence!

Maybe specific candidates are hard to evaluate, but I do think it's interesting to see what different people value in general.

We've seen what a coaching disaster can look like, and around the league we've seen just how much a good coach is worth. I think this is a big deal for us

I think Hoss' point is he has no idea who is going to be good until they're good, so he won't get too bent out of shape over it.

    But Kadri's hit probably did.

We get it. The era of having fighters just to fight is over. And we get it. But having tough guys who push back when the other team is taking liberties is a real thing.

You think Kadri’s hit is going to deter the Bruins from running Toronto players?

BTW, I don't deny that teams still like to have guys who push back when liberties are taken. I just don't think there's any evidence that having those players actually prevents liberties from being taken.

The Islanders 4th line has been incredibly effective against the Penguins because of how physical they are

You don't have to build a team around those guys, but it's good to have a few around, especially for the playoffs

Which is a completely different argument than having tough guys protects your players.

  12. 1 hour ago, inkman said:

Clearly he and the Bruins are pusses because they didn't immediately decapitate Kadri. Casey Nelsen didn't see the hit so the Bruins didn't know how to react. ?

And Chara's presence did nothing to deter the hit. Chara didn't deter. It's almost like deterrence in the NHL is a myth.

For clarity's sake, Mittelstadt wasn't our 2C this year. He averaged 13:27 a game, behind Sobotka's 14:11, Johan Larsson at 14:18 and the guy who ended up our actual 2C, Evan Rodrigues at 15:49.

I say this only because the myth persists: the only stretch where Casey was used anywhere near a 2C happened in February, when he was used for more than 15 minutes in 7 of 8 games. It happened just 9 times in the 50 games before that and twice more the rest of the year.

Your point still stands, except for the caveat I would accept the addition of an elite 3C and a legit 1st-line winger in lieu.

He wasn't the 3 by ice time, but do you think Botterill had designed it that way? I think Botterill had him penciled in at 2 and it just worked out differently because he obviously wasn't ready for it.

7th overall is only a "maybe" if your scouting department is clueless. We need offensive talent in the pipeline.

That's not true, of course. 7th overall is very much a maybe. It's more likely to produce a good player than a late first, naturally. But it's still as likely to give you Darnell Nurse or Risto as it is someone like Monahan.

Kevin Hayes is a big 45-point matchup centre who certainly fits our needs.

Reportedly the Rangers could have re-signed him for 5 or 6 years, $30 million or so.

Surprised he isn’t talked about more around here.

He's on my list! If we could add him, trade Risto for Miller or similar, and get another middle-6 like Dobskoi, our top-9 would be drastically improved overall.
