Why isn’t the default assumption that people just change as they get older or move on to new situations?

They aren’t robots. They are human beings that change over time. Kane in San Jose is not Kane in Winnipeg. Same Lehner. Probably same for ROR.

So you think O'Reilly undergoing a fundamental personal transformation over just a couple months that changes how he affects his teammates is more likely than he just is the same guy with better teammates? I guess it's possible, but I don't see how that would be the default. After all, people on this very forum were crowing about how poorly the Blues started as some kind of evidence the O'Reilly cloud was a real phenomenon. Whoops.

It's going to be a bit annoying trading him to Tampa, with that team being that good. His numbers (at least on the surface) are going to look great and we'll hear about it.

I doubt it. For example, Jack Johnson has been on some really good teams, yet his individual numbers were still really bad

  3. I love how "playing against top players" is simultaneously being used as an excuse for Risto's bad numbers and a reason he's a top-pair Dman we simply have to keep. If Risto really was a #2, playing against top competition wouldn't cause his numbers to be trash--he'd be able to handle those minutes. And his ice time was down 2 minutes per game this season. And? Numbers still trash.

Look, I defended Risto for a long time with some of these same arguments. But at some point it's just time to accept he is who he is: he'll get you some points, especially on the PP, but he's allergic to the puck at even strength and blows more defensive assignments than Eichel.

Not in the sense that you have a mediocre team and fluke your way to 16 wins.  However, in the sense that a fluke occurrence (e.g., the aforementioned Sabres defense) changes the outcome of a close series along the way, it can happen.

Yup. Don't forget in the Cup that year, Roloson got hurt. So the good fortune didn't end with the conference final.

But it happens in every series, in every year. What if Kucherov isn't suspended. What if defenseman A doesn't have that rib bruise. That isn't luck, that is just what happens.

    Yes, that's luck.

Ma's got a really tough Thanksgiving coming this year.  Half of the family are from Chicago; the other half, from here.  So she'll have about 30 minutes in between games to get us through a holiday meal.

Think of it as an opportunity to revolutionize Thanksgiving meals. Don't force the meal between games--embrace the chaos and weave it in.

There's so much focus on how bad Tampa failed.  However, if CBJ had this lineup all season how good would they have been?

They radically overhauled their roster for the playoffs, it was a gamble, and it paid off.  At least in Round 1.

What's clear is that CBJ was prepped and ready to play and executed their game perfectly. They were relentless.  It'll be interesting to see how far they go.  It'll be even more interesting to see what happens to that team after this season.  Of course, winning the Cup will make people more forgiving, but if they see players walk away from the team it could be an epic collapse that awaits.

    It's one way to live.

It also doesn't hurt that Bobrovsky went from below average in the regular season to a stud against Tampa. Which is at least a little ironic, as his career history is mostly the opposite of that.

I hate that these two are counted together.  I'm not going to bother looking up how many fake shoot out wins Tampa had, but those aren't the same as Detroit's 62.  Asterisk!*

*Just like our 10 game streak to start the 06-07 season.

I think Tampa doing it in an era with a hard cap at least partially offsets the shootout effect in terms of impressiveness.

Wait, so it's okay to use +/- as an acceptable stat again? I can't keep this stuff straight.

Nope. Just like weather isn't climate, +/- isn't what I'm talking about with goals.

Edit: what I'm trying to say is the problem with +/- was never the concept of what it was trying to do, but with the measure itself.

2015 Golden State Warriors: Hold the record for NBA wins in a regular season (73-9), lost in the NBA Finals

1995 Detroit Red Wings (62-13-7), 2018 Tampa Bay Lightning (62-16-4): Tied for the record for NHL wins in a regular season, lost in the WCF and 1st round respectively

I know it's not cause = effect and all that, but it's still wild to think about

I just read Tampa is the first team in NHL history to win the Presidents Trophy and get swept in the first round. Saying again, if Stamkos had a different nationality he'd be getting butchered by the talking heads.

Circulating on Twitter earlier from Nate Geary. Nothing behind at all just a scenario that Tampa would laugh at but

7th Overall to Tampa for Point and Callahan( one year contract dump)

Yea, that's obviously not happening. But I do think there's an outside chance they overreact and do something kinda dumb. I don't think Yzerman would, but he's gone, and we have no idea what Brisebois is capable of.
