So much this.  I know it’s the off-season optimism but botts is sitting with a real opportunity here.  This team has the core that should be good enough to compete.  I really like Risto but if Botts can pull off a big move I’ll be suckered back into thinking playoffs.  Have to get this trade right.  The difference between this trade and ROR is he doesn’t at all have to trade Risto.  Sounds like there is a lot of demand out there (for a 24 year old right hand d I’m not too surprised).  Maximize this return if you do want to love on.  Risto cap hit isn’t bad either.

You can't tell me to get over ROR and then go saying things like this! You're killing me! He didn't have to trade O'Reilly. Maybe he felt he did, but that's not the same thing as a pending UFA or RFA refusing to sign. He could have misjudged the need.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Lots of talk about getting Miller from Tampa. I don’t really know much of him.  He was pretty highly thought of in ny and then disappointed in Tampa?  What would we be getting here?  Good second line centre?

He's not going to blow anyone's doors off, but he's solid in every phase of the game, can play anywhere in the top-6 (excluding 1C), and has a reasonable contract. There's really not anything to dislike about him, and I love the fit for what we need. He had 5 straight 20-goal seasons (including his split year between NY and Tampa) before having a down season this year where he got pushed down the depth chart. Bring him to me!

I think what has been missed in the furor of ROR winning the cup is that Botts has so for subscribed to the theory of trading away players he doesn’t want for liquid assets and using liquid assets to acquire players he does want, with cap space being an asset he is very conscious of.

Using the four “big” trades above, all the picks and player scraps have been almost superfluous.

It’s O’Reilly, Kane, Guhle for Skinner, Montour, Thompson

And in the process, he’s added extra 1st and $20 million in cap space that he will probably cash in over the next week or two.

I still have questions about his judgement of talent, but he is clearly a smart guy who is playing the long game and he clearly has a plan. I’m really interested to see how he executes it into the summer and beyond.

I don't think it's clear at all that this is his plan. It certainly might be, but I don't think it's so obviously the case that we can rule out him being a rookie GM out of his depth and making a series of independent moves. After all, let's not forget about a quarter of that cap space was acquired by accident when Berglund walked away.

Size and speed in the middle six in the right age group on an affordable contract.

Good forechecker with 15-20 goal upside, but not that smart. Kinda like Evander Kane, but not as good.

Can certainly see him being tried in the power forward role some want with Jack and Jeff, even though I think he’s more of a middle-six type.

His career high is 25 points. If that's not a bottom-6 player I don't know what is. I know the line numbering discussion has its problems, but he should be viewed as a 4th liner who can flex to the 3rd here and there.

The #31 vs #20 and then Risto vs Poink add to that to taking a significant chance on signing Truba long term.

The question is value from the Jets' perspective, not the team that has to sign Trouba. The gap between Risto and Pionk is considerably wider in value than between #31 and 20. So if Pionk and 20 was enough, I don't see why Risto would have to be involved for us to make it happen. Pionk is bad! Cheveldayoff might have wanted a RHD, but I can't help but wonder if McCabe + #31 would have been enough.

I think Risto to Jets has to be in play now that Trouba is gone.

I would love to see a Risto and prospect( Smith/Thompson/Nylander) for Ehlers and Lowry.

Wait. Hold on. Did you just suggest a trade that isn't totally bonkers? Is the Wookie holding your family hostage or something so he gets his bad trade championship belt back?

I doubt there has ever been a player who shines so well in traditional hockey metrics (points, size, skill, battle) and yet so poorly in a analytics, all with the mitigating factors of how he’s been used and the team’s he has been played on. The league just doesn’t know what to think of him.

If the analytics guys are right, the time to trade him has passed. If the traditionalists are right, the time to trade him has yet to arrive,

I think the reason why Botterill may have backed off from trading him is that he has been given no good reason to pull the trigger.

Dion Phaneuf. I'm going to keep saying it because it's true. The debates around Risto are seriously identical to those around Phaneuf in his Toronto days.

I pretty much called this in the other thread yesterday when I compared it to the Skinner thread: it’s basically a full-year rental of a player who is going to be very expensive and very picky about where he will sign. Pionk is better than Pu and the pick is 15 slots higher.

Even though the players are similar, there may be less impact on Risto than you would expect because the contract situations are so different. Risto gives you 3 years @5.4, much is easier to absorb under the cap.

Well, Trouba has also played on the top pair of a contender. Risto, not so much. It's so hard to think of Risto trades because I'd imagine GMs are as polarized on him as hockey fans are. The only thing I'm confident of is that if he's trades, his fans won't think it was nearly enough.

Right, I feel like I've been missing something with these trade proposals. In theory, Tampa pays you an asset to take Callahan. So, essentially Miller and Callahan for nothing returned. If we are giving them Risto, we should definitely be getting something else, whatever his value is on the trade market.

If Miller is so good that he's more than offsetting Callahan, we toss them a pick. Definitely needs to be a lot more coming back if Risto is included.

I'd do Miller for Risto straight up, but if we're taking back Callahan then we need a nice add from their side. I'd almost view them as separate trades, even if they happen and get announced together.

No offence to Pionk, but I’d rather have Tage, a first a second and scraps. ?

More seriously, looks like Risto and 31 could have got it done.

The flip side is this should temper expectations for any return in a Risto trade. The contract situation is more team friendly, but still, I'm shocked the price for Trouba was this low.

Gotta think they've decided to let the Thornton ship finally sail.

I wonder if they think they can get someone to take the Martin Jones contract?

I don't think I'd want to touch that Vlasic contract either. The money is okay but the term is scary as hell.

I think, if I were a SJ fan, I'd be pissed if Pavelski walked in FA.

I'd let Jumbo Joe be our stopgap #2 center next season though...

I can't believe Vlasic is 32. Without looking, I thought he was like 28-29.

I like McCabe too, but he has played less then sixty games the last two years. He’s not getting a six year deal till he proves he can stay healthy.

Even when healthy, I don't think he's been good enough to want to lock up for 6 years. I think it was 11 who originally suggested a few months ago not wanting to be the team to do this, and I'm with him.

Your dream world is my nightmare.

I'm curious what everyone thinks Nylander's trade value might be at this very moment. The trade equivalent of a 2nd rounder maybe?

I'm pretty sure Freeman meant they'd be there because of their play, not because we have no other options.

If Nylander is only worth a 2nd, there's no reason to trade him. His probability of being an NHL player at all certainly isn't lower than your average 2nd, and his ceiling is still higher.

To return to the original premise:  saying I’d rather have Vesey than Sheary isn’t “zeroing in” on Sheary.  My point wasn’t that there is an urgent need to get rid of Sheary — I was just using Sheary as an example of someone the Sabres have that Vesey would represent an upgrade over.

Except it was a bad example, unless you can provide something other than height ?

I'm fine with adding Vesey. He's an NHL player who can chip in some much needed secondary scoring. But let's not pretend he's something he isn't. That's all I'm saying.

I agree generally.  I feel there will be 3 ‘big’ moves, one defense, one center and one winger.  I love the idea upgrading Risto to Trouba, but worry about committing 8+ to Trouba with Dahlin and Montour needing $ in the next two years.

Dahlin will certainly get a monster deal, but I don't see any reason to think Montour will get anything to be concerned about. Especially with Bogosian coming off the books at the same time.
