I see.  He was agm though was he not?  Even then I thought  Lamoriello was only there a year or two to show him the ropes.  Dubis has to have had a say I would think.  I even remember the signing thinking how strange it was giving a big 3 year deal out to marleau when all cap projections had to have shown a crunch for the last year of the deal.  Two years would have made sense but maybe that’s all marleau would leave for and leafs obviously thought it still worth it.

I'd be equal parts surprised if Dubas supported the move and if he had any kind of real say. Lou doesn't strike me as the type to let a 30 year old talk him out of something.

Dubis may still be a genius like leaf fans say but when they signed marleau I was shocked.  Not for the money they gave but thought for sure it would be a two year deal.  It was obvious two years ago that Matthews and Marner were due raises this year.  Why did dubas agree to a three year deal?  Was marleau worth a first rounder for two years of use?

    Dang

Lamoriello was the GM when they signed Marleau.

So I'm about to head off to a valley I spend a lot of time in, and a place where I don't have internet access.

Every major move the Sabres have made the past few years - Both ROR trades, the Lehner trade, drafting Jack, trading Miller, trading for Kane etc. has happened while I was there.

So, keep your phones/laptops/whatever nearby the rest of the day!

We thank you for your service.

Sure. The first is the focus. And it's not good on its own, so I'd rather not add anything else to go with it.

If it was the trade deadline and we're sitting firmly in a playoff spot I absolutely trade my first for Miller.

Well, I think Miller is being underrated by you and others. He's not my ideal top-6 center, but he's a legitimate top-6 player on a value contract and in his prime.

It depends, but we've been bad for a long time and have a ridiculously flawed depth chart, so I'm not inclined to be confident that we're giving up pick 24

Fair, but not making moves certainly creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts. Without taking some risk to improve NHL talent, we're unlikely to see better NHL results.

I agree with everything you just said, but in my view that doesn't translate to "trade a first, a third and a prospect for JT Miller."

Well. I think the prospect they traded is as much of a prospect as Danny O'Regan was when we got him from San Jose. And a 3rd? I don't care at all about that. It's all about the first, and we can agree to disagree on that.

Today the devils got PK Subban for a package I wouldn't give our (likely to be high) first round pick for

Is our 1st really likely to be high 2 years from now? If so, I guess I don't care because if we're so bad still than I'll want the world to burn anyway.

We can build a package around that first that can make the team better than just giving it up for JT Miller would have

In your head maybe. I have yet to see a trade that makes me think this is the case in the NHL.

I hope our GM doesn’t think of puck value like this. You shouldn’t have to pay a price like that for Miller. I agree very often with the “trade late firsts pick for value now” train when possible but there’s a chance that pick isn’t a late first.

    I don’t think he’s a second line center on a good team.

And you shouldn't have to pay $9M for Skinner. But you do. If Botterill keeps kicking the can down the road, he's going to be unemployed before any Sabres fans even know who these picks are.

Absolute zero chance I’m giving a first round pick for a third line center. That could be a very high pick for Vancouver. And could be for us.

He was a 3rd line center on the best team in the league. He's a 2C on most teams, including ours.

Edit: Also, the value of a mid-late first should they even make the NHL is a middle 6 player.

    I agree.

Miller is not worth a pick in the teens.

Maybe if we improve our team enough we'll be good enough to pick in the 20s before I turn 40.

Edit: Also the probability that that pick produces a player as good as Miller within the next...4 years....is really low. Like, 10%?

Canucks give up a conditional 1st for Miller.

    Outbid us.

I would not have paid that price. 2020 lottery projected. If it doesn’t convert it’s unprotected in 2021. Plus a third and a prospect.

No? I would have done that all day.

Subban being targeted as the “most overrated” in the entire league in a sport with a not-so-great racial history and zero diversity is most definitely “nefarious” as I put it. Calling him overrated is fine. He might be at this point in his career.

Go to the comment section of any post about Subban from the NHL. The comments from fans about his “character” seem to forget how this man has given his heart to so many worthy causes and truly engages with the people.

Some Vancouver reporter said the Canucks shouldn’t pursue him because it’s become the “Vancouver Subbans” because of his character. The idea that a rich black man with confidence who engages with the public consistently is selfish and an attention ***** is played out.

FWIW, I took him to be making a swipe at the ROR locker room trade return rationalizations, not anything having to do with PK.

Folks if people are expecting a 31st overall pick to turn this franchise around, think again.  31st picks rarely are elite players.  Most grade out at mid roster forwards or 2nd and 3rd pairing Ds.  That said, give him 2 more years and he'll likely be knocking at the door.

Actually, most grade out as not even being NHL players.

Fun for you.  To me it makes things less of about how you build a team and more about how you can just throw people around wherever you want.  What is a team at that point?  Uprooting people for the hell of it was never all that appealing to me.

I also pay no attention to the NBA.  So.. I'll take your word for it.  But what's good for the NBA isn't necessarily what's good for the NHL.

If you're really going to get into the human aspect of it, then you should probably hate the entire idea of a draft at all, right?

Well, the question, as always, is... what, if anything, was offered for it and was that worth it?  The "chatter" was that the Sabres were fine with trading it.  But it doesn't mean they would give it away, right?  We just don't know.

And unfortunately, I don't have faith in the GM to evaluate whether any offers were good. Fortunately for all involved, I'm not going to pull a Liger about it ?

I don't see the issue with what he's been saying about it.  I don't like the pick, either.  We need to develop some people who can finish.  If they had this guy penciled in as an option at 31, did they bother to consider the forwards on the board?  You can argue they did...but do you really know?

I wanted them to trade the pick, I just can't imagine being so up in arms about who they picked. WGR listed the #31 picks dating back to 2006, and it's a really bad list of players most of whom never played more than a season in the NHL. The odds are both Liger and Botterill are wrong.

I think you guys are being too harsh on LGR.  His negative opinion of the pick is no less valid than anyone's positive opinion of the pick.  Come on.

You might value picking a D here, obviously the Sabres do, but not a one of you can say you always agree with every stinking move they make.  I give you the ROR trade.  Where is the logic of "you don't know what was happening behind the scenes" applied to that around here?  LGR is owed his opinion just like anyone else.

Nobody cares that he has an opinion. He just sucks at expressing it without a blood pressure explosion. He just has to tone it down, is all.

Twitter Chad says he "has it on good authority" that they hated Kaliyev for what it's worth, and Brawndo says they didn't interview him. I wonder what smelled funny.

They were talking on WGR he has work ethic concerns.
