The thing is that the good teams don't add depth that plays like the erik Johnson I saw last year. Assuming that your depth is going to have to be players that played at that level is a huge reason why the Sabres were bad for 12 years. The signing isn't that big of a deal. There are a million offseason iterations that replace it with something else and leaves us better off though.

They didn't sign Johnson to bench him but there's a decent chance it ends up that way by 2024.

He really was awful every second I saw of him last year

The bulk of the stat includes faceoffs that have little more importance than a standard board battle. But it's good to be good at board battles. But a lot of times it's also more than just the centers fault a faceoff is lost. The Sabres main problem is that they're worst in the league at them, and that when you take a subset of crucially important faceoffs, special teams and end game stuff, the gap between then and everyone else seems to get larger

I hit the Bruins board. I think this is a good addition, that we should not expect to be a staple 4D for power, based on what I read

I still see room for Graves and a joki trade 🙂

At the very least, RHD doesn't add up right now.. and we had the excess of LHD

I will say that these additions feel like baby steps from Boosh and Comrie when we were hoping for "the Diggs trade" type stuff. Still early

As others suggested, this makes the Johnson addition far more reasonable.

Edmonton's non-top-line forwards always have such a distinctive smell lol. You can tell years in advance who will eventually play for them. Nondescript "middle six" guys who do nothing particularly well

In the best game of last season, Dahlin danced around Reaves at the point for a good 4-5 seconds before scoring the tying goal late in the third vs Minnesota

The bisons were down 2 in the 9th, down 3 in the 10th, down to their last strike in both innings. Walk off grand slam won it in the 10th. Fun game
