First game of the season that I can watch. Sabres look better than the squad that started last season.

This year's goalie talent in the, per Central Scouting, is developmental only. See a run in the late second or early third rounds. Sabres can draft a goalie and develop him for the next four years. This is a smart trade. Lehner is entering his prime.

Since January Murray has over turned the roster. Here is who he brought in: Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian, Jason Kasdorf, Chad Johnson, Jack Nevin, Robin Lehner, David Legwand, Ryan O'Reilly and Jamie McGinn 3rd (2016 conditional), 5th (2016), 7th (2016), 2nd (2017). He traded away: Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford, Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux, Brian Flynn, Michel Neuvirth, Torrey Mitchell, Chris Stewart, Nakita Zadorov, Mikhail Grigorenko, J.T. Compher, 1st (2015-21), 1st (2015-25), 2nd (2015-31) I think he got value and rid the Sabres of Darcy's mistakes. The parlayed guys he picked up in trades for better talent. Sure he got rid of 3 premium picks and young talent but he got very good talent in return. The rebuild will not be very long. No Edmonton model of suffering a decade for a chance to make the playoffs. Murray wants to make the playoffs ASAP.

One can hope that the second pick is mid first and ready to step up.

I wish they went back to the ping pong balls and all the GMs in studio. The looks on their faces tells the tale. TM has 3 picks in the top 31 this year. Add a few free agents to the mix, they will not be a lottery team next year. The young squad will be exciting.

Don't forget the Sabres have another first round pick and two second round picks. They will get some talented young men this year. If done well, the future is bright.

Even Milbury looked bummed for the kid. Edmonton does nothing for the NHL to market to the US audience. It is not a good TV fit. Even if they sign him...there will not be a flood of free agent talent wanting to play there. It is not the 80s and Gretzky.

The kid looked bummed. His only hope is to hold out and force a trade. Exiled to Edmonton....sucks.

I was vilified for saying the Sabres would not get McDavid. The odds are against any team that finished last getting the top pick. McDavid will be wasted in Edmonton.

It is sobering to know the odds favor the field (80) over the Sabres. (20). I want to hope but being a fan I am realistic. McDavid is a dream that seems just out of reach. Good luck TM and company.
