  1. I’m not going to get into a situation where it seems like I’m defending +/-; it’s a weak stat for measuring personal success. It’s a good stat for measuring how effective your line was in the role in which it was used. ALL stats are a measure of team success mixing with personal success, tied to usage.
  2. Well said. No team that is serious about winning starts the season without at least one proven capable NHL starter in goal. Despite the fact Anderson and UPL have played well, neither were that at the start of the year, and neither is likely to be that when the year finishes either. I would love to see UPL do his best over the last 40 games to change my mind.
  3. To be clear I’m not either. I said he’s having a season offensively that mirrors what O’Reilly did over his 3 years here. And I think Tage’s performance so far this year might be better than what I perceive to be the weakest season of O’Reilly’s past 10. But he’s got a long way to go to reach the stature O’Reilly has and I would be very surprised if he gets there.
  4. If Ryan O’Reilly goes -10 for the Blues in December and +10 for the same team in January, I’m going to conclude he was likely a more effective player in January. Feel free to laugh and point and call me unsophisticated.
  5. I was approaching this from the opposite direction, checking to see if the numbers supported my memory. Your cherry-picked Tage stat also seems to reflect my memory of him slumping in December. I don’t remember O’Reilly being as good in year 3 and enjoying Tage’s game more this year, Maybe I’m wrong. 🤷
  6. I don’t know man, I’ve always been a big O’Reily booster, but I don’t remember him being h8 self that year. Maybe my memory is putting too much emphasis on the way he finished, but he was -23 that year and I remember his effort falling off badly. Looking at his game log, he finished with 7 points in his last 5 games, but before that he had just 2 goals in 19 games and was -12 over the final 2 months. He also started the year -17 over his first 25 games and we wondered if he was pouting that Eichel got the C over him. Maybe he was real good in the middle?
  7. Yes, to the 1st. That said, Tage this year is better overall than ROR was in year 3.
  8. Alex Tuch’s 17 points in 15 games has him flirting with the top 5 in points per game for NHL RWs Kucherov, Rust(!) and Rantanen are well ahead of the pack. Alex is right there in 6th, with Meier, Marner, Zucarello and Batherson, ahead of stars like Stone and Kane.
  9. If this season is just about development, I should be pissed about Cozens, Samuelsson, Fitzgerald and Krebs (not counting the PP) having some of their worst games of the year. But I think we’ve got ourselves a legitimate front line. Since Jan. 1: Tuch 13 6/10/16 +7 Skinner 15 11/6/17 +1 Thompson 11 3/10/13 -1 Wish there were more teams we could beat with just one line
  10. The bottom 6 needs to be good enough that Cozens, Krebs, Olofsson and Asplund have to earn top 9 ice time, not be gifted it. The first three have been mostly passengers tonight. It’s OK to have a Jankowski and a Hayden as your 13th and 14th forwards. It’s not OK to have Jankowski, Hayden, Eakin and Bjork as 9, 10, 11, and 12. Girgensons, Mitts, Hinostroza and Caggiula are be better than those 4, but we still need to aim higher.
  11. Hope the haters saw the clip Marty just showed of Dahlin’s passing. Multiple difficult, smart plays under pressure against the grain to find the open man. His hands are so good.
  12. Our long pass sure is more effective tonight. Montreal.
  13. If it wasn’t for Thompson, Skinner would be a shoe-in for most surprising. He’s been so bad for so long, I doubted he would ever come back. But he has been an effective top 6 player, who is scoring again, and playing a team game better than he ever has as a Sabre.
  14. There is nothing to be gained by pulling Levi except making him and the organization look spoiled.
  15. Two ways of looking at this one: Despite being awful this year, the Habs have played better under St. Louis and will be primed to jump on a Sabres club who might be underestimating them. The Habs are awful, and a hungry-for-wins Sabres bunch are primed to go for the throat and take advantage.
  16. It’s all setting up just like the movie script. Next is the scene where Julien is nursing a rye and coke in a dark basement office, brooding at his whiteboard. Enter Shane Doan: “we gotta play the kid”
  17. Here’s a list of non-UFA goalies who, for contract or roster reasons, might be available this summer, where long-term deals aren’t an issue: Jake Allen Mike Smith Ilya Samsonov Anton Khudobin Anti Raanta Peter Mrazek Jonas Johansson Jonathan Quick Semyon Varlamov James Reimer Chris Driedger Jonathan Bernier Alexander Georgiev Matt Murray Who would you target and how much would you pay?
  18. He’s having a season statistically that mirrors ROR’s 3 seasons in Buffalo and to my eyes is playing at similar level. He has a chance to catch Sam Reinhart for the most points (65) in a decade by a Sabres not named Jack Eichel. Aside from being productive, he’s seeing the other team’s top defenders and beating them with his size and his skill, he’s opening ice up for his linemates, carrying and protecting the puck very well, working hard on defence and he can finish. Aside from a dip in December he’s been pretty consistent. He’s also playing with a notable swagger that this team desperately needs more of. I’ve enjoyed watching him play. Best story of the season. I don’t think he’s a 1st-line centre or will become one, but I do think he’s become a difference-maker and a legitimate top 6 forward.
  19. Update. Since this post, Tage has put up 2 goals and 10 assists in 10 games. He’s 38th among NHL centres. His points per game rate (centres with at least 15 games) is 46th, tied with Matt Barzal.
  20. 27 straight without a goal. Prior to this run he's never gone more than 8 without scoring. That said he scored 8 in 40 to finish last year as well, so that's 13 in his past 88 games. That's after 27 in his first 65. It's like him and Skinner switched jerseys.
  21. That game was a textbook example of why they need a better goalie. People are going to to think I'm blaming Tokarski. I'm not. I'm saying that on a bad young team, the skaters don't always play well enough to win. Last night, they played well enough to win. Psychologically their play needed to be rewarded with a win. In games where one shot is going to make a difference, you need your goalie to be making the huge save more often than he lets in the clunker. It's that simple.
  22. Given various hints that Sabres- and league-watchers are dropping, and Anderson’s presser yesterday, it seems likely there is a market for him.
  23. If Bryson, Olofsson and Asplund were playing now like they played in October we'd be a decent squad.
  24. Are you sure? I've never seen anything indicating how the Sabres had any draft ranked, let alone that one. i think that is actually the Hockey News top prospect Future Watch ranking, one year after that draft. If you look at the guys available around Mittelstadt, the Sabres scouts did OK that year. 6. Glass 7. Anderson 8. Mittelstadt 9. Rasmussen 10. Tippett 11. Villardi Also, that draft list was initially set by Tim Murray's team, then carried out by Murray's assistant head scout after Murray and his head scout were fired. Not really relevant to the Sabres' scouting now at all.
