Found an interesting podcast this morning discussing why our political system is broken, and what some of the fixes might be. There is some interesting concepts here. It's a long read (or listen). But I think the points regarding what is broken and why are probably more right than wrong. And the fixes are interesting. The perspective is that politics is an industry, not a public service, and the problem solving was attacked from an industry POV. It's a good Sunday read/listen. If reading, get through/past the first couple of paragraphs. The subject matter picks up after. Freakonomics - politics as an industry For instance: the Social Security Act of 1935 had 90 percent Democratic support and 75 percent Republican. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 had 60 percent Democratic support and, again, 75 percent Republican. Now, for the last decade or two, that’s been the opposite pattern. The only way landmark legislation gets passed is one party has enough votes to pass that by itself. The Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, was passed in 2010 with zero Republican votes in Congress. President Trump’s 2018 tax-reform bill? Zero Democratic votes. There is some interesting ideas about primaries, about winner take all elections, and gerrymandering.

UPDATE: Sam Reinhart signs 2-year extension -- $3.65MM per year
Weave replied to dudacek's topic in The Aud Club
The thing I don't like about those stats are, there is no upward progression in them. The scoring we got from Sam in year 1 is little different from the scoring we got from Sam in year 3. And the trend seems to be holding in year 4. Where is the growth? It appears that this might be Sam. There is no more to get from him. -
My gut tells me CJ Smith is AAAA. Luke Adam, Mark Mancari, Ken Preistlay.

I know. Jack is sad enough for both lines now.

Jack has a negative world view? I thought me moved that guy in the off season. -
Remember when we bragged about how much center depth we have? *swoons* This team really needs a Kyle Turris type center for the 2nd line. *or whatever other legit 2nd line options are out there, don't care to micro analyze Turris specifically. It's a concept.

Sheary plays at his speed. And if Sam can thrive with Jack, speed isn't his issue with Sam. Casey's (and the whole 2nd line really) sole issue is he isn't ready for the role he's got and 2 more kid wingers from Rochester doesn't change that even a little.

The timing of finding that quote couldn't have been any better. -
Totally agree with your premise that active intervention is needed to change the trajectory. There is no fix for what ails us that exists in Rochester. Without a good 2nd line center the kids in Rochester aren't providing a thing. The kids you want to see up here are wings. They are going to flounder, most likely worse than Sam is floundering, because they aren't used to playing against NHL talent and we don't have a #2 center to be the foundation for their line. It is a setup for failure. There is only one way this gets fixed. OK, 2 ways. One is for JBotts to swing a trade and get this team a legit #2 center. The other is for Casey to have a sudden, miracle growth spurt and start playing like a legit #2 center. I don't see Casey having a miracle growth spurt. His development is going to take time. If we get a league average performing #2C, Sam's game will come to life. Casey will be put back into the sheltered role he needs and his game will progress because he's suddenly playing against 4th liners consistently. And Casey's wings will also show life against the lesser talents.

Then just come right out and own what you are really meaning, you don't want immigration. Expanding on this further... New York City has a law that allows for residents to obtain a pistol permit. However, in actual practice there are about 4,000 pistol permit holders in the city. And nearly all of them are issued to retired cops, active security guards, and certain business owners. Is it disingenuous to say that NYC allows its residents to own pistol permits? Or is it simply the rules? If you support the rules as they stand, you are supporting nearly eliminating handgun ownership by the average person. Same thought process applies for immigration. It is disingenuous.

Donald J Trump, your thoughts on his Presidency

I don't see how they are good for anyone. I can't imagine our shareholders are happy with the results so far..... -
the bolded is nothing but hyperbole. It is very similar to saying that if you voted for Trump you voted for accepting racism because he wouldn't call out the racists. I don't accept that at all. And no, I haven't been affected negatively by illegal immigration. Here is the kicker. I live in an area surrounded by Mexican and Latin American immigrants. I live in an agricultural county. I see and interact with them every weekend when I run errands in town. Your story is a sad one. But for every one criminal that gets in there are thousands that are perfectly good neighbors. Not unlike any other community. In fact, the ratio of criminal behavior to non criminal behavior is very similar between immigrants and citizens. And yes, the Federal government does exist to serve it's citizens (that it actually doesn't in practice is food for another thread). Too bad we're not talking about our gov't serving non-citizens. We're talking about a real path to citizenship. My Spidey sense is tingling....

Have you ever looked into the hoops and dollars necessary for this? It is damned near impossible to get residency (not citizenship, residency) without an approved job. Executive level workers and workers with exceptional abilities make up 28.6% of work visas. Skilled workers and professionals make up another 28.6%. Certain special immigrants who are employed or experienced in very specific jobs categories get another 7.1% of the work visas.Immigrant investors are next in priority with no set percentage of visas set aside for them. That leaves something less than 35.7% of the available work visas for every other class of worker. And temporary residency is easier to obtain than permanent residency, which is easier to obtain than citizenship. Which is a long way to get to....... I would like to say I mean LEGAL immigration, but it has become so much more difficult today to obtain LEGAL citizenship that my great grandparents would not have qualified. So, no, we need more immigration than what our heavily restricted system allows today.

The quote is, by Nfreeman. It is "I'm a firm believer that incessant message board complaining will fix the situation." It is no more than that, really. An outlet for frustration that a team and player you are emotional about isn't performing as you'd hoped they would after so much emotional energy was expended in the process of getting to this point. -
Well congrats. I guess you get to stay. I'm 4th generation. My great grandparents were welcomed here during a flood of immigration shortly after WWI and had children that became citizens. The same situation that Trump wants to stop. Our birth rates are down. The only way this country continues to grow is with immigration.

Yup. we laid off last month. And early retirements were offered this month. Early retirements offers are typically followed up with more layoffs if they don't get the number of volunteers they want. Our business is down 20% in the last 6 months. China is 30% of our market. -

Those tariffs still aren’t working..... U.S. trade deficit rises 1.3% in September to $54 billion. Imports up 1.5% to record $266.6 billion. Exports also increase 1.5%, to $212.6 billion. Deficit with China hits new record despite tariffs. Trade gap on track to reach 10-year high in 2018. -

Olofsson isn’t going to do a damned thing to improve secondary scoring until we get the 2C position in mproved. He’s not that kind of player.
