John Shannon: "The Sabres would be better not making the playoffs"
beerme1 replied to beerme1's topic in The Aud Club
It may not be fantasy hockey, or a console game. Although the blur that has and is happening here sure does make it feel like it doesn't it? :w00t: But it is still hockey and the talent that has been added should not be undersold. Sure it may take some time to adjust all the different personalities and coaches but it is still hockey and the talent brought in is pretty damn good at it. A slow start likely dims playoff chances this coming season. I cant disagree with you more though about expectations though, This year? I feel they have a chance. But crap come on, if they don't make it next year this has to be considered a MASSIVE failure and heads should roll. Luckily, I like the architects and I like our chances this year and especially next year and beyond. Lets Go Buffalo -

This is a great post but with a avatar that doesn't fit in the picture you paint. Please fix self. You're bang on point! If Lehners a bust (no) and ROR becomes Timmay, God help us all. But your comment "why would having high expectations be a bad thing" Is exactly the point. Last year or year before there were no delusions. We all knew we we're going to bad. Think of the players we've rolled through here the last couple of years compared to who we are rolling with next season and beyond. YA! -
Going Friday half expecting a full house :flirt:

This a great point. And yet another reason I think they do well. They have a tough start and a tough finish. I think people are under selling the talent level the team has increased to. And the playoffs will be nice. They have to gel quickly and get off to a decent start. -
You're new here, welcome I wonder, why are you trying to hurt me?

LOL Yes I believe fanboyism will be very high and it's already started and it will be great. Have we, make that anyone in any sport ever had a reason to be so optimistic coming off the worst season ever in mankind as we know it today though? -
ROR on board. Ya!

$900K now we're strapped.

Absolutely. One of the good guys at Buff News.

How am I wrong? Saying playoffs are the goal? Ok, that may not be the goal and I can agree with you that there is nothing to be gained by not making the playoffs. Well, short of missing and then lucking out and winning the lotto! But that is certainly not the goal. The goal will be to play high level hockey again and see where we end up. If it's playoffs, great. If we miss we miss. However, I will say that with the upgrade in talent and coaching, I do expect we make the playoffs. Of course a lot could go wrong but the upgrades are there. I think we clearly have upgraded the talent to the point that we most certainly should talk about the playoffs for next season. I disagree with the thought that it will build them up long term by missing short term. Of course I want them to make the playoffs. Making it also gives them valuable experience that they miss out on if they miss the playoffs and we have plenty enough experience at that. I have the same concern with the Goalie position but have faith that Murray wouldn't have done this without fully thinking that through. And Lehner has enough time in despite his age that he ought to be able to roll with this now. Amen! No way are in a short term rental mode at the deadline. Absolutely no way. We are being built for the long term. In addition as I'm sure Murray knows, those deadline add on's rarely make a team a cup winner. I don't see Murray making a deadline deal for a number of years personally. Just like he feels about FA. That's not the best way to build a team. I have full faith in him. -
Caught him on GR yesterday and he said we would be better off not making the playoffs this coming season because it will create unrealistic expectations of making the conference final the next season and he doesn't think that's a reasonable expectation. I respect him and like him. I understand his point of view but am going to disagree with him. As Thurman Thomas would say, it's on like a mo fo now! O:-) I think the goal will be make the playoffs this year and start cup runs next year ending in the conference finals next year exactly as he says people will feel, and the cup in the third season. Am I wrong? Or is he? We are most certainly on an excellerated path now. It's a good listen. http://media.wgr550.com/device/mobile/a/107065173/7-2-sportsnet-s-john-shannon-talks-free-agency.htm?

Godd or PA would be happy to point out that the season ticket price increase will cover that gap and, line Terry's pocket's to boot! I'm not happy about my season ticket price increase. But I know I'm funding Eichels baby college fund! I am FINE.
