Having Hanifin too low isn't a big problem. It's what everyone remembers, but it turns out to be a terrible method of judging a draft board. It ends up that rating a player too high is what kills you. Let's look at 2013 as an example, it will help me explain. Let's say you are picking 8th, and your board looks like: 1. MacKinnon 2. Drouin 3. Jones 4. Barkov 5. Monahan 6. rakish 7. Ristolainen 8. Nich So your board looks OK, except for thinking I'm the 6th best prospect, because when you pick 8th, you end up with me, never a good thing. Now let's look when Button misses a couple low. In this example, Button's board looks like: 1. Drouin 2. Jones 3. Ristolainen 4. Zadorov ... 98. MacKinnon 102. Nich Now, you look at this, and it looks crazy, because it's obvious that MacKinnon isn't the 98th best prospect, but in the end Button gets Risto, it really doesn't matter that he had MacKinnon too low. So in this example, your board is more reasonable, but your one miss, rating a bad player too high, kills you, Button's couple of good players rated too low has no effect. Button is in my draft contest. He's competitive because he doesn't rate bad picks too high. When you look back at Central Scouting, they have terrible results because they will have a couple bad players too high, and it kills them (they also have good players rated too low as well).

I looked at Bylsma's last couple years in Pittsburgh, and that team had normal numbers. The last few years the only players that were eyebrow raising was the number of minutes Kovalchuk was getting in New Jersey and the minutes that Toronto's first line were getting, but that was only 3 in the top 50
-
At this early point, Bylsma plays his top forwards more than every other coach, and it's not close. 23 teams have forwards in the top 50 in ice time per game, there are 5 Sabres. (3) O'Reilly (11) Ennis (14) Kane (36) Eichel (46) Gionta Other teams top 50 in minutes: Pittsburgh (1) Crosby (19) Kessel (27) Malkin Kings (2) Kopitar Oil (4) RNH (5) Hall Devils (6) Zajak (7) Henrique (23) Cammallari Canucks (8) Sutter (17) Sedin (25) Sedin Stars (9) Seguin (24) Benn Sens (10) Stone (22) Turris Flames (12) Monahan (20) Gaudreau Hawks (13) Kane (16) Toews Flyers (15) Giroux (41) Voracek Hurricane (18) Staal Blues (21) Steen (28) Tarasenko (39) Backes Wild (26) Koivu (37) Granlund (40) Parise Caps (29) Oshie (38) OV Wings (30) Zetterburg (49) Abdelkader Jets (31) Ladd (43) Little Ave (32) MacKinnon (35) Landeskog Bruins (33) Eriksson (34) Krejci (44) Bergeron Mighties (42) Getzlaf Sharks (45) Pavelski (48) Marleau Canadiens (47) Plekanec Preds (50) Forsberg

The McDavid clip ends with an icing, so they couldn't get him off the ice. It didn't look like anyone got in his face at the whistle. If I was the coach of the Dall... oh... nevermind

What does this mean? -
the draft combine stuff had both Eichel and McDavid at 195. I'm surprised Eichel is now 20 pounds heavier
-
This is backward, different styles of play have different developmental arcs. McDavid is a better MacKinnon, he's at the top of his game, as MacKinnon was at 18. McDavid doesn't need to get stronger, it's not his game. Eichel plays a stronger game, and he will get better with age. He's a better Toews, who improved a lot from where he was drafted. Surprisingly, they are almost the same size.

So Sith Lord, any theories on why Guhle lasted that long in the draft?

You got to look in the link under the word 'lower' in the NYT article, that gets you to a deadspin article that separates out different crimes.

Kessel and Phaunef for Reinhart, Hodgson and Gionta?
rakish replied to Tolstoy's topic in The Aud Club
None of you read the article, it's actually funnier than Tolstoy's headline -
I haven't spent any time on it, but I did notice that Tim McGauley and Trevor Cox were not selected. Though I could easily miss that someone signed them last year. Eliteprospects does a real good job telling you if someone was drafted, but it's hard to tell if someone was signed as a free agent. In regards to Cox, the Medicine Hat Tigers were pretty good last year, yet only have one prospect I see (a St Louis defenseman). At the other extreme are the Saint John Sea Dogs, Craig Button, for instance, has almost the entire team on his ranking, yet they are not very good.

It seems, from this article, that the CBA was vague as to what they intended, so last year they wrote an advisory. That advisory uses the 'general' term that Chz states.
