I think the critical stat is on-ice shooting percentage. For me, that highlight is an example that shows why Eichel's is really high. -

I think it's an age thing, the 20 year olds make that pass, the 25 year olds put the puck on net. Just a theory, don't go apeshit -

I was thinking about changing my anwer to Taylor Fedun and Seth Griffith, but decided taking two picks would be to much. -
31 Teams, 31 Days - Catching Up to Start the Season

I read somewhere that Marchessault was left available as part of the deal to dump cap (Reilly Smith). -
I think the data analytics happening among teams is more diverse than the media's lockstep on what your strategy should be. I can't believe the teams with a high shooting percentage are trying to raise their shot differential and getting lucky, and I don't see the teams trying to raise their shot differential being particularly successful. Most of my effort is in the draft, and every year I think "This team, and that team, and that team, have figured it out, but a year later they all go back to drafting like my grandmother." It's hard to tell what teams are thinking regarding their NHL play, where the draft kind of exposes their thought process.

The Minnesota Wild seem to believe in beating you with shooting percentage instead of the number of shots taken. Their entire team is good at it. If you look at Buffalo's stats the last couple years, it's Foligno (you're not getting Eichel) that has a really high on-ice shooting percentage. I think that's what they see in trading for Foligno. I haven't looked at it long enough to know if they are crazy or not.

This is why I think this site was trolled. I think jeffis was a little smarter than his obliviousness indicated. Once I believed that, I thought he was hilarious.

For me it's not the effort that's the problem. I just watch highlights, but Kane will invariably chase the puck (as will Ryan O'Reilly) allowing the defenseman Kane is suppose to be covering to get an open look. I think this partially explains the data, as he is on the ice for a lot of goals against while not playing particularly difficult matchups. On the offensive end, my favorite new stat involves the shooting percentage when you are on the ice. First line players have a really high number because passing the puck to Eichel normally has good results. Fourth line players have really bad numbers because passing the puck to Delo doesn't end with a good result. Kane's stat is really bad, much worse given his linemates, which you would probably guess if you looked at the number of assists he gets or the positive side of his plus/minus. I think overall there are different ways to look at hockey. My brother (and Tim Murray) look at skill set, I look at data. Most of the time we agree on players, but some players are perceived very differently by how you look at hockey and no one more than Evander Kane. Malcolm Gladwell in Blink talks about studies of teacher perception, that students, given a 4 second (or something) video of a teacher without sound will reach the same valuation of said teacher after a semester of classes. Gladwell believes that students are great at valuation from those 4 seconds of video. I think Gladwell is wrong, that students are really bad at changing their mind, that only the first 4 seconds means anything, and the student will ignore all new information to fit their first impression. Kane is like the teacher. He looks great the first 4 seconds because he can skate, shoot, physically dominating, that his supporters, like Tim Murray, will ignore the ways he kills the team because Murray has already decided Kane is good.

All the good picks (Eichel) are taken, I'm going with Taylor Fedun. -
Did you see the 3-3 tourney? Asplund was great, Mittelstadt really good, Nylander JAG. 3-3 is totally his game, it's not like trying to judge Fasching or Ryan O'Reilly, who don't play a 3-3 game. Last week at the prospect challange, JAG. I'm not totally sure without highlights, but I think he steps on a puck and falls down. Runs squarely into his own defenseman in his own zone. Yes he has a burst of speed. My drafting charts have him, at age 17, at 9th best forward in his class, 13th best overall. At age 18(his AHL season) 25th best forward, 30th best overall. Yes, good numbers at the WJC20 last year, but Sweden was in a bracket with really bad teams. I think those numbers need to be looked at with a bit of 'yeah, but' I think the world tends to look at high draft choices and their teams from their perspective, I try to value players vs. other players, and so far, Nylander doesn't compare well.

Wait a minute, I did not say anything like that. But you gotta admit, Reinhart scoring fewer points with Eichel than without is an eyebrow raiser.
-
I agree with everything Pokey says. On a 5-5 per 60, Eichel scores less points with Reinhart than Eichel scores otherwise, Reinhart scores less points with Eichel than Reinhart scores otherwise.
-
Glotov was also drafted as an overager, so he's older than you would think. For me, he looks good watching in both the 3-3 and this week, but he didn't really score in the Q, or at least not yet.

I guess there are ties to consider. As for the tournament indicating the strength of the farm system, I'm not convinced. The amount of improvement of players at this age really demonstrates the age of the players selected rather than the quality of each prospect. If Bailey and Pu were the same age, I would be a lot more excited about Bailey and much less excited about Pu. Pittsburgh, additionally, seems to try to get their prospects into the NCAA, so most of their best prospects, like Buffalo's best prospects, aren't here.

My sources are quiet on who is expected to play. If you haven't been paying attention, Nylander was hurt in the New Jersey game, and Asplund and Mittelstadt were not part of the roster. Pittsburgh roster The Penguins only rakish approved prospect on their roster is Daniel Sprong. Bruins beat the Penguins 3-2 in OT Penguins beat New Jersey 6-2 Sabres beat the Bruins 7-4 New Jersey beat Buffalo 4-3 in OT making all 4 teams 1-1 sabres.com played hide-and-seek with the streaming link for the Boston game, but I think it was quicksandmonster who found it on twitter.
