Tanking can work, however you can’t let it become a multi year deal. Tim Murray screwed the pooch when he tanked two consecutive seasons while destroying all means of connection between eras. Toronto got lucky, they became injury riddled and got to pick 1st in 2016 and without actively looking to tank got what they wanted. We never had such “luck” as we always were a mediocre to good team after 07 to which Tim Murray in his quest for McDavid deflated the balloon with a few good stabs to the fabric. He created a situation that has been nigh impossible to escape, mercenaries come here for quick stops, we never have enough of a viable veteran presence that could still legitimately keep rookies in their place. Plus he brought in a known locker room cancer and a goalie with concussion issues. On a another note Why on Hockey Reference do both Quinn and Cozens have solid analytics in relative Corsi and Fenwick ?

I will forever fall back on Terry was a Sabres fan prior to buying the team; the Sabres are also the only team he has more of a direct role in the team’s management. I also have mentioned before that I have a very legit source who told me that we interviewed Briere to be GM or Pres back prior to his job with Philly. Briere asked for the stipulations Beane and McDermott had in regards to non-interference and Terry refused. This in all likelihood also stemmed from one of the Kim Pegula vs Lafontaine debates in which the Pegulas wanted to have the Sabres visit their Nashville based record company on the night prior to the game day which descended into Kim more or less pulling the owner’s wife card and got her way. Frankly, Kim’s request here wasn’t absurd by any means to be honest but I get the sense that back and forth was frequent and often frustrating and Terry wants to have sit in and interaction rights with the team because like us, he’s a fan.

Mostly I agree with Fairburn here; however I do feel the Eichel (asked out) and Reinhart (1 year RFA) should be in some sort of "effective for the circumstance" Montour was more a casualty of Krueger's style than anything else. Adams tenure, thus far and hopefully not much longer, can be summed up by multiple inconsequential trades with a handful of mediocre outcomes and few that in hindsight hurt our souls. A GM that values his players more than his contemporaries and only has an elementary knowledge of team building. He definitely understands "team building" as a concept unlike Tim Murray but has limited skill to pull off his own goals much less ours. I picture the following - Pegula isn't cheap as much as frugal (give him a reason to spend money and he would, he just paid Dahlin 11.5 mil a year and Power over 8mil. The traditionally cheap owner lets players walk upon their first large contract which isn't what's happening here) - Pegula likes to be involved in the information, scouting, etc meetings when possible. (What fan wouldn't?) - Adams either lacks the confidence or skill to convince Pegula of spending to the cap on players. (Or worse, he himself doesn't feel the need to) Essentially I think Pegula has his checkbook on the table and Adams for some reason just never asks for its use or else can't give legitimate reasoning for its use. One theory in regards to staffing would be Adams used inefficiencies and wastefulness as a primary point for why Botts needed to be fired. If you tell someone 10 scouts are inefficient, I can do better with 8 upon hiring; how exactly do you then a couple years later ask for more scouts without effectively undercutting your own perceived competence?
