They're still there, but what are they doing? At this point, it's not even the military doing the bulk of the sanitizing. Something to consider, albeit more than 20 years old now: http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2014/08/the-war-photo-no-one-would-publish/375762/ Note, don't click on that link if you don't want to see a few disturbingly graphic images.

Dehumanization of the enemy is always a go-to tactic. Japan's people got much the same about the US from their government. It's easy to look backward and cringe, as we should, but no country is blameless. I think we are all subject to viewing the events of WWII backwards through the prism of Vietnam. All we have ever seen of WWII was produced (or approved for distribution) by the government, or the government of another of the nations involved. Technology, of course, had a good deal to do with it, but I digress. Those who served and returned knew all too well what happened, but the vast majority of the population simply were not confronted with the visceral reality. With the media coverage of Vietnam, for the first time, those at home got a very good look at the reality of war. We didn't like it very much. Add this to the nebulous nature of our involvement in Asia and the instability at home and things changed forever regarding the relationship between government and the governed. To think that there were no women and children in Hiroshima or Dresden is, of course, ludicrous. We saw the photo of that naked girl running terrified down the dirt road in Vietnam though. Brought it a bit closer to reality. Media, incidentally, will never again be allowed such a free role in a war zone. For a reason.

This is true, but they're hardly Derrik Brassard away from contending, and have no money. Just kind of curious. Unless I'm horribly under rating them.

Fun fact: Russia never declared war on Japan until August 8, 1945. Think about what happened two days prior and one day later.
-
I also didn't say it was a good idea, or that it worked.

Brassard counts about twice as much against the cap. Rangers get space. Not sure what Ottawa's reasoning is.

I didn't say provoking...

The deployment of nuclear weapons in Japan had exactly one purpose, it was an attempt to frighten the USSR. The terms of surrender offered before we nuked them twice looked rather like what was put in place afterwards. End of.

Trump on 60 Minutes just now: "I think I am actually humble. I think I'm much more humble than you would understand." If he had been asked to sum up everything about himself in two sentences, he'd never hit the nail as squarely on the head as this...

It was the Cleveland Police Union President. Asked Kasich to declare a state of emergency. Obviously, no dice.

Probably shouldn't have, but I laughed out loud at that one, Promo.

I honestly think that Trump's choice of Sarah Palin without any of the personality in Pence just about does it for his campaign. Even if Trump actually wants to be President, which I doubt, there's no covering for this dude. I fully expect Trump to flame out in spectacular fashion once he's Head to head with Hilllary. If he does so, and still wins, then it, I'm calling the Irish Embassy for my passport. I get one because of reasons.

Erdogan now declares the coup attempt over. Of course, he does this from Istanbul. One wonders what the situation on the ground in Ankara is at the moment...

Paulie? Won't see him no more....

Not only high-school level mean-girl nonsense, but likely an actual crime. I assume CA has laws against this sort of thing. stay classy.... Ex playmates should stick to the terrible medical advice and leave the awful comedy behind. Sure, it's infinitely more harmful, but people tend to appreciate it more than this...

A mixture of the lowest common denominator, middle-class and down white folks who are genuinely getting screwed and think for some reason that different in his case means in any way good (despite all available evidence), and Bernie Sanders supporters who want to watch the world burn. I'm sorry, Bern.

That's a nice deal for Dallas. Benn was going to be literally the only top tier UFA forward next year. He'd likely have seen a ludicrous offer from somebody.

Not a good look from Obama there, but of course, I expected nothing else. Yup, this is gonna get ugly. There are very clearly two opposing streams of information coming out of Turkey now. Anyone reporting one or the other as fact can not possibly be doing so knowing it's correct...

It's been no secret that the Turkish Army, which emphasizes just how secular it is and government should be at every available opportunity, has been less than pleased with the direction of the country, now to see what percentage of the population agrees...

As vile as he is, Erdogan still has a sizable hard core of support. The coup may be over but this can still get bloody, especially if he gets on the horn from wherever he is right now and attempts to whip them up into a lather. Gonna be interesting. Edited to add: I'm also unsure as to just how much democracy the military is going to bring. There's what they're saying, and then there's what always happens...
-
Adding even more uncertianty to a part of the world that could use much less; Military coup in Turkey, sounds like it was successful.

This is perhaps the only healthy approach.

Also happening right now, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland is being shut down during the RNC to quarter imported riot police. It's summer, so population on campus is not at peak, and the school is (somewhat disingenuously) saying students are free to stay and classes are not canceled, they just will not be happening on campus (week 7 of the 8 week summer session. Faculty are not best pleased). Cripes.
