Just watched Barcelona-Madrid. Crazy end to the game, Madrid will be happier about it. Ray Hudson (Horrible, horrible Spanish football commentator for English-language TV) and Jack Edwards need to be strapped to the same rocket and fired directly into the sun, however. I have no idea why anyone thinks he's good. Edwards, at least, can be avoided. Hudson can only be muted.

Which is exactly why the Cable companies / Fox and so on pump huge money into these leagues and prevent streaming locally.

As I understand it, Bettman et. al. floated a three year extension to the current CBA in exchange for making the Olympics happen. This enraged the players because escrow. Non-starter. Been floating around awhile, guess they finally officially said no. There absolutely will be another lockout (although at this point I hope it's a strike) the instant this CBA ends. Ownership just can not help itself.

So, of interest to me as a (somewhat local) story, and will probably raise maybe one and a half eyebrows nationwide, Liberty (the kingdom of Falwell) University has named Baylor's recently and significantly disgraced former AD as their new AD. The same guy who, along with Ken Starr (heh, remember his act?) fell on his sword for obvious "mishandling" of rampant sexual assault by student athletes (or, you know, sweeping everything as far under the rug as possible so as to benefit the athletic program to the detriment of the actual school and the students who pay exorbitant tuition in the hopes of an actual education). Evidently the message being put forth is "everyone is redeemable." Um, no. The NCAA needs to be shut down, but short of that, member schools, especially one as superficially pious as Liberty needs to be setting a positive example. Instead of, you know, the usual mealy-mouthed "we can win a few more football games so it's all good." Ick. Rant over,

The rule really only benefits two interests: Junior Hockey and AHL Veterans. Junior hockey because it keeps the free talent trapped there for a specified number of years and AHL guys because it keeps a significant number of them in jobs that would otherwise go to more talented younger players who are kept in junior as above. There are probably many examples of guys who would be better suited in the American league stuck in junior to their detriment. By no means the majority though, but the big picture development of players generally really isn't a consideration as the rule is currently constructed.

No, it's hard-written into the CBA. Junior eligible players can't play in the AHL, as per what Liger cited.

I'd also factor in that doing a mock expansion draft before the trade deadline is an exercise in time wasting elevated almost to the point of performance art.

On the bright side... took my five-year old daughter skating for,the first time today. Skating outdoors on a sunny seventy-degree day is a bit weird. First time I've been on skates in probably twenty years as well. Fun day.

Training a new hire at work for the past few weeks. Instructing attorneys on the proper way to do anything makes cat herding look like a worthwhile endeavor at the best of times. Then I get this today after the 95th screw up of the morning: "Man, maybe I should be taking my ADD medication after all." I have another one waiting for me when I get done with this one. No word on any meds involved...
