It was part of the issue. Oilers were unlucky, as they kept picking what seemed to be the best available player and all the high end talent was all one-dimensional. All those players Oilers drafted were fast, small, not physical, not overly good in their own end... there was no Ekblad or someone like Monahan or Barkov at the top. As for Colorado, their defense is a major issue for sure, but also team management and the type of players they drafted should also be looked at. Matt Duchene is a ultra-selfish player (http://www.thehockeynews.com/news/article/patrick-roy-unhappy-with-matt-duchene-for-celebrating-30th-goal-in-losing-effort) and they had constantly battles with ROR. On the overall point though, i do agree with you on improving the defense, i just think the Oilers and Aves rebuilds are much different stories and many factors go into them for their failures.

GDT: Colorado Avalanche @ Buffalo Sabres 7:30 pm MSG.

I know it's only been two games but i am loving Rodrigues' game this season. I've seen him a few times in Rochester and his stat sheet isn't anything to throw a parade for, so i was a bit skeptical if he had the talent to even be a successful AHLer, but he's proven me wrong. He's been outstanding. Showing great speed, his passes, his energy, and backchecking. I don't see how he loses a spot in Buffalo this season. He reminds me of a Brian Flynn, but maybe slightly better. -
As Murray says a lot on wgr, "never say never", but Sabres trading Kane in season seems to be one of the most unrealistic things at this point. Even if the teams we're chasing get hot in the next week or so, and by the time we return from the bye week we're double digits away from anyone sitting in a playoff spot, I just don't see how we'd get fair value for Kane in season? If we trade Kane, i think the trade is made in the off-season around the draft.

These next 7 games will tell us a lot about this team/coach

Sabres enter their bye week against the Blues and Hawks, and then teams returning from the bye week are something like 3-9 so far, so that's gonna be tough as well. Not a good schedule for the Sabres. -
Or Brandon Smith. Thats one player I wish the Sabres go after this summer.
-
GMTM doesn't strike me as a guy who gets married to a player. But i also don't think he'd let go of him for sake of trading him. Kane seems like the most likely to be dealt of our top-6 forwards - off ice issues, injury prone, UFA after next season...
-
I think they buyout Moulson this summer. Won't be a big hit.

Tim Connolly used to get booo'd. There was many times you'd go to the arena pre-lockout years when the Sabres were awful, the years with Biron or Mika in goal, and only 7-8k people were there. Different times. I'd take the booing when the team under preforms over half empty arena any day of the week... atleast the fans who boo are mostly doing it because they are emotionally invested in the team.

This is probably the most random thing i've ever posted on the SS, but after the Sabres game tonight my friends and I switched over to A&E and watched some of "Live PD", pretty much Cops but live. And in a incident in Arizona, the dude who got pulled over had the goat logo on his back window of his car. I think it was a DUI. Thought that was funny and had to share.

Deadline Nearly Here! What is GMTM going to do?
Two or less replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
Good question. I think that is true, it gives teams flexibility this year and Sabres have two second and two thirds as is. As for the 2019 draft- not sure about it ranks up against 2018 draft, but this may make you feel old... remember NHLers Todd Bertuzzi and Nik Antropov? .... their sons are in the 2019 draft, as is Joe Sakic's and Doug Weight's. -
As nice as tonight's win was, to me, it was more of the same. It felt like a nice win because it felt like we were these massive underdogs who went to Toronto and beat the giant Leafs 3-1. But other then that, i just don't think theres much to be excited about. Lehner was fantastic as was the defense, in particular Jake McCabe as many have mentioned above. Must give credit to Kane and Samson for finishing their scoring chances of course as well. Besides the hustle plays and the finishes, tonight was nothing more then any game they have played this past week vs NJ, SJ or the Ducks. Toronto was all over us, they were quicker, they were stronger, we had issues getting into their zone, and when we did we were one n done and going back the other way. I think Sabres fans feel very thrilled to have won, but i think Leafs fans think the better team didn't win. Leafs out corsi'd the Sabres by almost 40. I don't think i've seen it that lopsided ever. This game just had that feeling, if the Leafs had gotten a second goal at any time with time remaining on the clock, they were going to come right down and tie it up. Nice road victory for the Sabres, but as far as increasing our hopes of making the playoffs, this game did nothing for me. We are who we are, and thats not much more then a 82-84pt team.

Yeah i don't think Vegas will have any interest in picking up Moulson. However, the bad contract i do think they may consider is Josh Gorges. They'd only have him for one year before he can walk, and with a group of dmen which i assume won't be very good, they might like the fact he's a leader and have a lot of games under his belt. Whoever they get they'll still struggle a lot in their first season but atleast Gorges can work some positive vibes in practice and what not, and would be an expiring contract.

Tim Murray just said on WGR that the Amerks signed Patrick Mullen off waivers returning from the KHL and will join Rochester this weekend. He's a decent AHL player.

I hope this is a joke..

Fixing the 4th line - could it help fix the Sabres?
Two or less replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
I think we have a real good fourth line in the making. Carrier - Girgensons - Bailey Speed and grit. With some finishing ability. -
Not really interested. I guess it'd need to see what else they would be getting. Muzzin is about to turn 28. Gritty defensman don't age well. Like the surprise the St Louis Blues received when they paid a ton for Jay McKee expecting much more. Taking a risk with Muzzin is okay, but not when you're dealing a 25 year old player who is just going into the prime of his career.
-
If he can remain healthy, i think the Sabres can get a pretty solid haul back for him. Dmen in recent deadlines have fetched a ton... Yandle, Russell, Wasilewski.

Sabres paid a big price for Kane and Bogo but they got by far the best player in the deal and it isn't even close. -

Moscow, in the KHL. Lindy Ruff drove him insane. -

What's interesting is, if we are close enough the end of the season would be real exciting.... we host Toronto twice in our final 8 games. -

If they really want to be in this race, they need to start adding up points. Easier said then done, but there is no other option. We're too far back to lose points. -
Yeah, i'm not sure how much credit Murray should really get for signing the top free agent besides Stamkos. If he gets credit for hitting the jackpot with Okposo, does he get credit for drafting Eichel too?
-
Just curious, but what rumblings was there? Who was reporting we were looking to move him because of the Toronto incident?
-
But they may never play on the same team. I don't see how Murray can justify re-signing Kulikov? I think our best bet is get him healthy and back on the ice, and sell him at the deadline.
-
Im not on the fire-Bylsma bandwagon, but if Julien becomes available, the Sabres have got to reach out to him at the very least.
