Because management has been on a leash. That's the problem with society nowadays. People want instant gratification without any concerns about the ramifications it has on the future. And when the future arrives they bitch about what happened when they didn't build for the future. Of course he met with them, he wanted to go to a successful team. Did either team sign him? Has either team shown interest since? When he told them $7.5 mil/yr they slammed the door in his face.

I'd take Hartnell with his contract in a heartbeat over Doan. Hell, I'd take Hartnell with the contract that Doan wants over Doan.
-
Exactly! And they're not even in the running so what should that tell anybody? I think it is, because we don't have enough in the system to make up for Vanek, Stafford and Pominville. In a few years the Sabres will be fighting for a #1 overall pick. Sorry, I'm not willing to give up long term success for a short term run for a Cup. Really? Did you account for the loss of Roy as far as goals? DR already addressed the heart issue by dumping Roy and Gaustad and the physical side with Tarnasky, Scott and Ott. If nothing had been done in the offseason up to this point, Doan might be a valid argument.

Has anybody ever been to the drag strip or a car show and see some cars with little vinyl stickers that say 'For Sale'? The owner doesn't have a big for sale sign on the car because he really doesn't want to or need to sell it. But the little vinyl sticker is there to let people know that he's willing to sell it if some idiot offers him the insanely inflated price he has in mind.

A $15 million burden in a cap era........... YES.

The best way to get respect is not by picking up players other teams respect. Respect doesn't get you wins. Wins get you respect. This team can't afford his contract. They'll have to dump salary in a couple of years to afford him and by the time our young players come around and need leadership, Doan will be too old to play.

Maybe if he was 28............. and it was $5 mil/yr. Heatley? Heatley had a career WORST year last year with 24 goals..... which is Doan's AVERAGE over his career. Doan has never scored more than 31 goals, Heatley has broken that 5 of the last 7 years....... by a large margin. Lecavalier? He had one "bad" year in 09-10 with 24 goals in 82 games...... again a career worst year which is Doan's average. Gomez? Well yeah........................ :P Heatley has scored 31 more goals in 450 less games.

If Doan wasn't the last big name FA out there............ what would this forum do if DR spent $7.5 mil/yr on a winger who has won two playoff series and has never scored more than 31 goals? This whole place would be livld!! 1. Stafford is 9 years younger than Doan. 2. Stafford is making almost HALF of what Doan would make. Seems hitting is the most important aspect of a hockey athlete's arsenal today. I sure hope they have time to score with all that hitting going on, because BFLO hasn't addressed that yet. :wallbash: Stafford lead his team to a lower position in the draft? So Stafford sucks because he doesn't score, but he goes on a hot streak at the end of the season and now he sucks because he did score. Don't you think you're kinda pushing it a little... grasping at straws?
-
I didn't say nobody wants him, I said nobody wants to pay that ridiculously high price because the rest of the league knows he's not worth it. BFLO has never been in the running for a big name free agent, why do you think this situation is any different? I know that sucks, but reality's a bitch. If they want him so badly, why aren't they in the running? It's not that these teams CAN'T pay as much as BFLO, it's that they WON'T. They know he's not worth the money. The reason tese teams have Nash, Callahan, Hartnell, Richards....... is because those players are better. And where have the Coyotes gone? They've won TWO playoff series with him in the lineup! What have they done? Face it, Doan is the last FA left worth anything, BFLO fans are flocking all over it for the sake of signing anybody with no regards to the salary cap. Obviously you missed it, the references to the stats were used for comparison to Pominville. But since you brought it up.......... why is it all we've talked about is how badly the Sabres need scoring, but all of a sudden in this case it's not important? If it wasn't for Doan this entire forum would be up in arms if DR spent $30 million on a player who won't give us more than 25 goals this year. But now it's a different story because he's the only big name FA left and people want to sign him for the sake of signing him. You can say it's the leadership ability, but that's hyped up and you know it. He would be just another aging winger if the media didn't turn him into the NHL's cinderella story.
-
OK, pick anybody who has a $7+ contract...... he's not comparable because he's not "elite".
-
Why is it money is no option for a washed up winger who hasn't won a playoff series before this year.... yet every single day all we hear is people bitching about what the rest of the team gets paid? Sorry, I don't want to be cap strapped and to keep a guy who's got two playoff series win in his career.
-
Again, I don't see where Doan is all of a sudden this highly sought after "leader" that thinks he deserves Stamkos money. He's been a mid 20's goal scorer throughout his career and a name that most people knew but nobody would put on any "elite" list. The media loves to have a Cinderella story every year in the playoffs and this past year they chose Doan and now all of a sudden he is the guy to take any team to the top? He's 35 years old and how many playoff series wins was he a part of before this year? Man, $7.5 mil/yr for an aging captain who has only broke 30 goals twice in his career with two series wins to his name. Pominville has got to be loving this! He's been a part of twice as many series wins and hit the 30 goal mark just as many times and he's 5 years younger. That should get P-Ville at least 4 yr/$38-40 mil when he turns 35. Just because somebody is available, doesn't mean you need to go after him. If he was in such high demand he would have been picked up weeks ago. There's a reason he is still available and it's not because the Coyotes future is up in the air.
-
The Flyers will be next year if they don't make some moves to dump even more salary. Doan is not worth Stamkos money. Not now, not when he was in his prime.
-
I hope you're right. No need to be cap strapped by paying "elite" money to an aging player who was never elite to begin with, even in his prime.
-
HAHA!! Coalition governance...... now what fun is that?
-
Gary Johnson or Ron Paul. The only way to rid this country of total political corruption is to elect the officials the media doesn't want you to have anything to do with. Too many people settle for the 'lesser of two evils' and that's exactly what the two parties shoot for when building a candidate.

'Badge' from the 24 Nights CD at the Royal Albert Hall is one of the best. Nothing special by Clapton, just a great song! Oops, weave's gonna be mad I didn't post this in his music thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg9Qvml49Bs That is all.
-
Right, and he only got a 1 year contract. But I agree with what you said. No high $$ long term deal, short term maybe. If he was worth $30mil/4 years, I think there would be a lot more teams in the running.
-
$4 million tops. Especially at his age. If somebody is good with the community, he shouldn't need to command even more money on his contract (not saying he wants more $$ to be a part of the community). If community means that much, donate $1 million to charities. As a professional athlete who makes millions a year, he should feel obligated no matter what. This team needs goal scorers and a center, Doan doesn't fill either of those roles. He's not an elite player and certainly not worth an elite contract. That's just my opinion. ;) Off topic, is Bulldog getting worse or is he drunk today?
-
I agree. Doan is not worth the $$. What exactly has he done throughout his career? Was he really anybody before the 2011 playoffs when the media wanted to make him the veteran Cinderella story they love to have every year? He's barely a 20 goal/yr scorer who happens to have a lot of games under his belt. Granted Phoenix has had marginal teams in the past, if Doan is really a leader how many series wins has he been a part of? Wayyyyyy too much money for this guy. On a side note, I don't see how anybody can make new CBA rules retroactive. There is no way any team should be punished for contracts that were already on the books. Doing something like that can destroy a team for several years.

I got it. They are far more creative before they sober up. When they do sober up they can better play what they created when they were high, but most new songs after they sober up aren't quite what they used to be.
-
Very much like the Van Morrison concert I went to in the late '98. Good point.
-
I think Clapton got worse when he sobered up.

Was the launch aborted??
