game discussion thread GDT: Islanders at Sabres, 4-26-13 7:00PM

The Sabres finished off the season on a respectable 15-9-3 run. I don't think a long term rebuild is necessary. -

I didn't expect him to make it through this season with his concussions issues. Great way to finish. I'll be honest, I rooted for Stafford to miss his shot so Hecht could have a chance to win the game in case this was his last. -

I think I'm starting to go through withdrawals already. -
OK, answer me this........... you talk about advanced stats in terms of where shots come from, do you have any stats to back it up? Are you implying that Enroth doesn't face the same shots? If Miller is better at stopping certain shots, clearly Enroth must be better in some other aspect because he's still got a better overall save percentage. This is where I have a problem with advanced stats, every goaltender is going to face breakways, 2-on-1's, power plays, 3-on-2's, high shots, low shots, shots from the point, etc. Unless you have some kind of groundbreaking stat that shows that some of these stats are grossly skewed in only Miller's case then maybe you have a point. Either way, they all add up to overall save percentage. The neat thing about statistics is they can be created and worded in any means possible by the creator to further their point. When you start dissecting every aspect of an athletes performance into 100 different categories anybody can manage to make that athlete look good somehow. Your kid could come home and tell you he got a 96 on his math test, you can go brag to your friends about how smart he is, hang it on the fridge........ what they don't know is you didn't tell them about the four F's he got previously and he's going to have to repeat that math class next year. Silly example, but you get my point, stats can be deceiving often times purposely. 7 of the top 40 in save percentage are between 5'10" and 6'0". Not to mention Quick who is listed at 6'1". I don't think I need to remind you of Tim Thomas.

Yes, that is what I asked of people and I appreciate your answer. I've already addressed the advanced statistics point, I don't think it's relevant because no matter how you look at it the overall numbers on Miller are worse no matter how you sugarcoat it. As far as his size and not being great long term, I already addressed this as well. In this day and age of screened shots, deflections and goals scored on scrums no goaltender is going to be good long term. We covered this extensively a few pages back. You're reading too much into my post, I was just applying some logic to 38's point. ;) Oh, and Miller wouldn't have won any more games during that stretch than Enroth did. When you say he didn't win in over a year, you do realize he didn't play for 9 months right? To top it off, even with Enroth playing a majority of games when most of the D-men were hurt during the worst stretch of games in team history he still managed a better save percentage than Miller. Blame Enroth all you want, no goaltender is going to win when your offense scores one goal. Yes I am interested. Sure it's a short season and numbers may not matter. What about the other 7 out of 8 seasons where Miller was mediocre? What about Enroth last two seasons. Enroth carried this team to a playoff berth, Miller hasn't done that recently. You're using the 'Enroth won't be good when the league figures him out' excuse again. Guess what, every goaltender has weaknesses. If I had a nickel for every time Miller went to his knees and got scored on top shelf I'd be a rich man. Miller is 32, looks sickly and has no muscle and plays 60 games. What gives you the impression Enroth isn't athletic enough to do it?
-
One, it's not my thread. Two, I've addressed them several times I'm not doing it again. Taro summarized what the pro-Miller campaign has already said up to this point. Three, you're right he's not the starter. I'm pretty sure nobody has questioned that. The guy with the big $$ gets that nod because he makes big $$. And no, she didn't state why Enroth can't handle the workload. She stated why others couldn't handle the workload. Just like everybody else has. And FTR, advanced stats are meaningless unless you're scraping for something to make one guy look better than the other. Perhaps Miller is better is games where the 'Way the team played in front of him' index is above 3.2 and quality shot ratio is under 26.4% on Thursdays when the temperature outside is under 45°.......................... but a goalies job is to stop pucks and Enroth has done that better in consecutive years now. Until the Vezina is decided on useless 'advanced' stats, I'm going to stick with overall numbers thanks. Me too. Except I'd like to see them ride the hot goaltender. When he cools off, let the other guy go for a streak of games.
-
I don't and neither do you. Enroth isn't Conklin......... or Reimer or anybody else for that matter. Enroth is Enroth and until he gets a chance nobody can say he's not going to turn out based on any other goaltenders. And yet, up until right now only one person has actually attempted to answer my question why Enroth isn't able to handle the workload. And why is history against Enroth, because you decided to compare him to a career backup? And for the record, every year an equal amount of starters get off to a slow start and work their way back up. It has little to do with workload.
-
Well then, instead of having one starter and one backup perhaps we should have two starters split the schedule. I proposed that idea already.
-
If that were the case all backups would have .950+ save percentages. Alas, that is not the case. But he can't play 50 games because some other goaltenders weren't good enough to do it.
-
No, the reasoning is flawed as I have pointed out several times. No sense in doing it again. It's apparent Enroth won't ever be good enough for some people even if he won the Vezina.
-
Thank you! I'm not in total agreement with you, but I can respect your opinion. I just wanted somebody to answer. I think Enroth deserves a chance to show he can handle a heavy workload, next year would be the perfect opportunity to do so. If he can't do it, fine. I just don't think it's fair for others to say Enroth can't do it 'just because'. ;)
-
And I've also asked why Miller is better (or more deserving of starting), while providing relevant stats to back up my statements, and so far the best anybody has come up with is the usual 'Well, look at what he's done' or 'The coach must know something'. Yet, back when I asked during GDT threads why Miller was starting those games, people responded with he's the 6 million dollar goalie or he's paid to be the starter. Now for some reason that logic doesn't apply here? Yes, Enroth was better. That losing streak had NOTHING to do with how he played. In fact, I posted a few pages back what his save percentage was during the losing streak when half the team was hurt and it was actually better than his overall numbers. A goaltenders SOLE responsibility is to stop pucks. WHY!?!?!?! I have asked this so many times and nobody can answer it!!! Is it just a hunch? Do you have anything to back it up? It's the same talking points from all the pro-Miller guys. 'His stats aren't as good, but he is the better goaltender', 'Enroth can't carry a workload, even though he hasn't had the chance', 'Enroth didn't win a game for 14 months (Koziol's favorite) even though he didn't play for 9 of those', 'Enroth started the majority of the games during the team's worst stretch in it's history, but he didn't do his job because he lost them all'. 'Enroth won't be as good when the league figures him out, because other goaltenders don't have weaknesses'.....................

You like Verizon?

One would think.

Perhaps you need to realize that words on a screen don't emphasize feelings or intent. I made that mistake to you earlier and I apologized. If you can somehow magically gauge my intent based on words on a screen, good for you. But I don't think you can. You're the only one who thinks this isn't civil.
-
More advanced stats? Are you going to turn this around now and tell us that Miller has a better save percentage on Thursdays during the second period on game two of back to backs? I'm sorry, same roster with the same defense in front of you....... there isn't any other telling stats than W-L, GAA and save percentage when comparing two goalies on the same team. You're grasping at straws. You can't honestly tell me that Enroth's 'on' games are worse than Miller's. So basically Miller is starting three times as games as Enroth because his 'on' games are better? Hmmmm...... NHL.com needs to add that stat, that's a new one to me. At least Enroth is winning more and stopping more pucks. I guess that's not important. Miller is starting for the same reason Vanek wasn't benched. They're making big bucks. Miller is the Golden Boy and the organization is still not giving up hope that he will be a Vezina winner. Just like they never gave up hope on the rest of the core until it was too late.
-
Rolston said everybody had a clean slate when he came aboard. Here are Miller's and Enroth's stats since then. Miller: 10-9-4 2.88 GAA .912 Save perc. Enroth: 4-2-1 2.34 GAA .926 Save perc. If Rolston is starting players based on performance and what gives the team the best chance to win........ why is Miller starting more than 3 to every 1 of Enroth's games?
-
What makes you skeptical that he can't do it? Lots of short, quick goaltenders have had heavy workloads without issues. What made anybody think Miller could do it when he got the strting job? I keep hearing this excuse that Enroth can't handle a heavy work load, but never heard any serious reasons as to why. Can you give any reason why Miller has deserved to start more games under Rolston? His stats certanly aren't better than Enroth's. I'm nearing the same impatience as you are because I still have yet to hear some simple logic to explain why Miller is any better.
-
$100/month for all 4? :o She should be happy she's got any data at all for that much.
-
Miller is making 6+ mil, Enroth under 1 mil. A new coach isn't going to bench Miller in favor of the underdog no matter how he plays. Sorry if I thought you were being facetious. ;)

If it means anything, I was at the Sprint store yesterday and was looking at the new HTC One, I am really impressed. $100 with a 2 year contract. Aluminum case, stereo speakers and 1080p. I think the camera is low res though. Gonna have to compare it to the 4S coming out.
