For those who find Ms. Daddario appealing, there's a pretty compelling scene in season 1 of True Detective.

I saw this article yesterday -- pretty interesting stuff. I also find TK's story generally pretty interesting, going back to his decision to take the Sabres to arbitration. He's from WNY and was developing into a nice role player for the Sabres. He played 78 games for the Sabres in 2009-10, putting up 10 goals and 26 points. Then, after that season, he took the Sabres to arbitration and got a $1MM award, which the Sabres walked away from by waiving him. He then bounced around with 3 different NHL teams and their AHL affiliates, playing a total of 89 NHL games over the subsequent 5 years before bailing out to the KHL. There was also a fair amount of PAFan-induced psychodrama on this board about the greed and betrayal demonstrated by the Sabres in waiving him, IIRC. Moral of the story: if you're a fringe NHL player trying to make it in the NHL, don't overplay your hand when negotiating your contract. And if you're a poster on this board, not every management decision regarding a fringe player is momentous or avaricious.

The Glendale Coyotes might move to Phoenix, proper
nfreeman replied to LGR4GM's topic in The Aud Club
Perhaps they had that right -- and as Taro said, whether they did have that right will depend on the facts and the law -- but that's not what you said initially. You said it wasn't fair to criticize the city for walking away from a bad deal made by the prior administration. That is a much different argument than the illegal-conflict-of-interest argument. This is also quite possible, and if so then it may have been the right decision by the city -- but it's a fairly Machiavellian and bad-faith decision that certainly deserves criticism. -
Dude. I cited 2 polls, not one, and I said that it's too early to be meaningful. Do you not think Hillary's camp is concerned?
-
Not sure what you mean by "increased." Surely you don't think more Hillary will get more minority voters than Obama did?
-
Edmonton wouldn't take Pysyk and a 3rd to drop from 4 to 8.
-
Interesting. It certainly seems plausible that a lot of Sanders supporters will feel this way, and that her internal polling mechanisms will tell her this. Still, it's hard to believe that a Clinton-Warren ticket or a Clinton-Sanders ticket could deliver enough votes in November. But that brings me back to what I said earlier about no one knowing anything anymore.

Good point, although it's somewhat diminished by your non-use of the quote feature. I also think that "coated" paper (i.e. magazines, etc.) is less biodegradable than plain paper. But we're rapidly approaching the limits of my limited knowledge. -
I'm sure this is true for many of those 15%, and it's still far too early for these results to be a meaningful predictor of November, but still: Trump by 5? Hillary's camp must be pretty concerned. My initial reaction is that this wouldn't be to her benefit strategically, since it would put off the independents, but the only clear lessons of this campaign appears to be that (i) people are good and fed up with business as usual and (ii) no one can predict anything.

Do you really not think FB curates those news stories in a politically motivated way? Separately: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2016/white_house_watch http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/fox-news-poll-bernie-sanders-donald-trump-hillary-clinton Holy mackerel.

It's also worth pointing out that the "97% of scientists" meme is a canard: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamestaylor/2013/02/13/peer-reviewed-survey-finds-majority-of-scientists-skeptical-of-global-warming-crisis/#186711ed171b https://wattsupwiththat.com/2016/02/10/the-profiteers-of-climate-doom/ http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304636404577291352882984274 http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/11/science/earth/what-to-make-of-a-climate-change-plateau.html?_r=1 http://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-scientists-dispute-climate-change-2012-4 -

Exactly. There is no need to fill up the Earth with garbage. BTW, paper is the biggest culprit -- it comprises something like 40% of worldwide landfill capacity. And it's recyclable! (Of course, the recycling process has its own environmental impact, but that's another discussion.) This is simply untrue, and of a piece with the shouting down of dissenters that pervades the climate change groupthink. Good stuff. -

Excellent post. I personally tend towards the smoother single malts -- my favorites are MacAllan and Oban and I don't particularly like Lagavulin or Laphroaig. For something kinda in between, I like Caol Ila. -
Awesome. NZ is on my bucket list. And you should post more often! I'm sure inquiring minds would like to know the origins of your Sabres fandom.

I didn't have time to get into it when it came up, but that last Woody Allen post was pretty whacked-out.

I think GMTM is a ZFG kinda guy, but I don't think he's going to buck the unwritten "no offer sheets" rule.

Except that (i) Team Stormcloud (Bills Edition) has objectively valid reasons for pessimism while Qwk does not and (ii) recent posts by Qwk have demonstrated a warped view of reality not present in TSBE's trenchant analyses of the Bills. Now there is a nasty case of genital warts ready to happen. Speaking only for myself, my pessimism about the Bills is not due to fear of misfortune, but a strong suspicion that there are incompetents running the organization. As for the 2nd bolded part: the team president has been here since 1997; the GM since 2010. They have collectively been part and parcel of Micky Mouse suckitude for most of the lost generation.

If you have a feeling in the pit of your stomach that this season is going to be an epic debacle, resulting in RR and DW getting canned and TP being forced to do a reset like he did with the Sabres -- yesterday's news fits right in.
-
IF the Sabres were to trade Bogo in a deal for Barrie, couldn't they keep some of Bogo's salary in the deal? Or have they already used up their allotment?
-
Not on my watch. It was indeed excellent.

I'd expect most agents do that kind of thing for their upcoming UFA clients. As for this quote: I take that to mean they made him an offer after the end of the season -- which went well into May that year, because they were in the ECF -- and before July 1. Whoop-de-damn-do. They waited too long and then made him a (presumably) well-below-market offer when the Brinks truck had already arrived and was idling at the curb in front of his house. As for the no-extensions-during-the-season policy -- I'd bet that was TG/TQ's brainchild as well. Yes, I'm still bitter.
-
Everything your wrote is true...BUT the critical omission from your post is that the Sabres, like they did with just about all of their FAs in the 2005-07 era of contract infamy, let a player get to FA instead of signing him to an extension early -- with the predictable, and repeated result that the player got a huge offer in FA and left (or, in Vanek's case, forced the Sabres into an over-long, overpriced extension). We don't know how much they could've gotten McKee extended for a year before his UFA date, but I'd guess you would agree that it was well below $16MM.

But what if you really like the mountains? Or the ocean, the woods, the desert, etc.? Is that superficial? If not, is there much of a difference between caring about the topography and caring about the weather? I don't think those reasons are superficial.- 59 replies

The bolded is probably unfair, but it does invite some enjoyable speculation about what we could swindle them with for Barrie. Is Grigorenko plus Zadorov plus Compher comparable to Zemgus plus Pysyk plus Fasching?
