Lundy has had a great, likely HOF-level career. He's got star power, presence and fantastic hair. He also just turned 38, had a crappy season this year and fell out of their goalie rotation, becoming the #3 behind 2 FNGs. His GAA has gotten worse each year for the past 6 years; same with his SV% other than a 1-year blip 2 years ago -- his #s this year were 10-12-3, 3.16 GAA and .905 SV%. To be fair, this decline has coincided with an overall slide into mediocrity/bottom dweller status by the team. He has 1 year left at $8.5MM. This could be an opportunity to get a decent pick or prospect from the Rangers in exchange for eating Lundy's cap hit, and get some leadership and improved goaltending in the bargain. It's not impossible that the motivation from being dumped by the Rangers, plus a better group of defensemen in front of him could result in somewhat of a revival. I'd much rather bring in a no-BS good #1 goalie, but if that isn't available -- is anyone interested?

Over the weekend I assembled a shelving unit and organized 2 large closets that were starting to look like landfills. It took a few hours but was well worth it -- the before/after contrast is really striking. One of those small things that you get a disproportionate amount of happiness from.

Was this the game that Vanek won with the around-the-world move in the shootout? If so, it was a fantastic game.

I am surprised at the willingness here to trade Dahlin without assurances that anyone in the package becomes what Forsberg became. In Dahlin we have the 2nd highest scoring young defenseman of all time, who achieved that distinction for a bottom-level team in his 1st 2 seasons. There is a real possibility that Dahlin develops into a multiple Norris winner and a generational offensive defenseman. I’m not giving that up for picks, prospects and an up and down goalie.

Well, I think the weather is somewhat of a factor, but I think, as @Eleven points out, the biggest factor by far is the perceived quality of the organization. The Sabres have been a crappy organization for most of the era in which those polls have been taken. Once they get the right guys in to run the team, and build a consistent winner, plenty of players will want to come here. That's what's happened with the Bills, and it didn't even take that long.

For @Brawndo, @Wyldnwoody44 and anyone else interested: the WSJ has an article up about daily emails sent by Dr. Craig Smith, head of surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in NYC, summarizing the day's events and generally providing context and some inspiration: https://www.wsj.com/articles/coronavirus-emails-columbia-craig-smith-11585711804?mod=hp_featst_pos2&mod=article_inline The emails are available on twitter at: https://twitter.com/ColumbiaSurgery Here's his email from last night: https://twitter.com/ColumbiaSurgery/status/1245086295799586818/photo/1

If the Sabres bring back JB this will be one of the bottom-3 destinations in the NHL for free agents. Buffalo is already close to the bottom per the survey in the Athletic earlier this season and keeping JB means there is zero hope or excitement to lure a FA that has other options. You are right about shrinking cap space leaguewide but that list of FA centers was pretty thin and there will be plenty of interest in Johnson (heh.). No one is giving him a 7-year deal but a better franchise will give him a 3- or 4-year deal and he’ll take it.

I’d support a GoT walk of shame for them.

Well, you’re not alone in wanting to keep Simmonds, and it certainly wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong here. (It might be the first for @Randall Flagg, though.)
-
Regarding Simmonds: he looked like late-stage Moulson to me. I don't think he can keep up with the game any longer.
-
I would love to buy out KO, and I think it's reasonably likely that the NHL and the PA agree on some kind of compliance buyout arrangement. I would also love to sign Johnson, but he'll have plenty of suitors. He's probably not coming here, and definitely not on a cheapo 2-year deal. I think Larsson will choose to leave as he is probably tired of losing. I do not want Simmonds back. He's done like dinner.

Moved some posts to the politics club. As for the substance/credibility of the link I posted -- this is similar to the treatment that the French have had success with recently, and that @Brawndo (I think) has reported is being used off-label in WNY hospitals.

It’s not remotely a hot take to think that Mitts has been a major disappointment so far and is at least 50/50 to never become a good NHL forward.

@Weave -- Latest from Dr. Fauci is an estimate of 100K-200K US deaths: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/fauci-coronavirus-could-kill-over-100-000-americans-n1171556 Obviously that's still too many, but I mention it just to provide further context to our recent discussion on this upthread.

Dude — you need to stop throwing this around when you disagree with someone.

Exactly. It's a tricky question. On the one hand, if City A is overwhelmed and City B has plenty of capacity, it's easy to say that City B should take patients from City A -- but everyone knows that this will substantially increase the risk of widespread contagion in City B.
-
The question of whether a city could legally refuse to accept patients from another city, especially in the same state, and especially where the hospitals receive state money, is interesting. I doubt that a city could do this. The question of whether it would be morally right to do so is a separate and also interesting question. I think in considering that question, weighing one city’s lives against the other’s is unavoidable.

I feel like keeping Mitts improves the odds of having a #2C about as much as keeping a roast beef sandwich improves them.

I believe that was the document that gave rise to #blueprint. What a freaking debacle.

FWIW, his college coach (Andy Murray -- a former NHL head coach) was on WGR this morning and spoke very highly of him. Murray made it sound like Matthias is absolutely an NHL player. Also, I hadn't connected the dots, but Dawson DePietro was a college teammate of Matthias'. Murray said DDP was one of the fastest players in college hockey and a good scorer, and has a reasonable chance at making the NHL.

GDT: 8pm. MSG-B Rangers at Sabres: Drury's "who else?" Goal (5/4/2007)

I remember watching this game plausibly live on the DVR, not finishing until 2:30 AM and weeping uncontrollably at the end. Thanks again OSP!
